Texas' Guadalupe River bursts banks and drowns multiple people as city begins to disappear underwater

By NATASHA ANDERSON

Published: 10:20 EDT, 4 July 2025 | Updated: 12:34 EDT, 4 July 2025

A deadly flash flood has left at least six people dead and thousands fleeing for their lives after the Guadalupe River burst, engulfing several Texas cities.

The Guadalupe River rapidly rose by more than 22-feet overnight, before breaking its banks and overtaking the small, rural towns of Kerrville and Hunt.

At least one family is missing after their entire Kerrville home was swept away by the raging storm.

Video shared by KPRC reporter Gage Goulding shows the rushing waves are carrying debris down the river as heavy rains continued to pound the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) declared a flash flood emergency for all of Kerr County, roughly 90 miles outside of San Antonio, after nearly 10 inches of rain fell overnight.

Heavy rainfall caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly, with the water level having already reached a near-record height of 34 feet this morning.

Evacuations are under way for locals living along the river, with authorities warning the of a 'dangerous' and potentially 'life-threatening' floods. Residents are urged to 'seek higher ground immediately'.

The emergency warning remains in effect for the area, as well as nearby Kendall County, until at least 2pm local time Friday.

Considering the high level improvements in weather forecasting up to the minute, you'd think if everybody was doing their job, this couldn't have happened.

Talking about the up-to-two dozen girl campers.

Tubing on the Guadalupe is a huge thing here in Texas.  And on the 4th of July?  This death toll could be many many times greater than the initial count,.  I hope many heeded at least any warnings given.

The family of missing Camp Mystic girl Renee Smajstrla gives heartbreaking update.

“Thank you to all our friends and family for all the prayers and outreach,” said Shawn Salta on Facebook. “Renee has been found and while not the outcome we prayed for, the social media outreach likely assisted the first responders in helping to identify her so quickly.”

“We are thankful she was with her friends and having the time of her life, as evidenced by this picture from yesterday.  She will forever be living her best life at Camp Mystic. Please continue to pray for the other families in Kerrville.”

There were warnings given, at least 3-12 hours in advance of the downpours and flash floods.
Of course, certain ghouls on the left are trying to blame this on (you guessed it) Trump and alleged cuts to the federal government's weather bureaucracy.

excerpt:

Quote
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said on Friday night that between 23 and 25 campers were missing. There were 750 attendees at the camp when the flood hit.

On Saturday, Kerr County announced the flood killed 27 people, 18 of whom were adults and 9 were children.

Camp Mystic, which had approximately 750 attendees, reportedly told parents that if they had not been contacted directly it meant that their child was accounted for.

Elinor Lester, 13, told the Associated Press she was evacuated with her cabinmates by helicopter after wading through floodwaters. Lester also said that the "camp was completely destroyed" in the disastrous flood. The outlet noted that Lester was housed on higher ground at the camp, known as Senior Hill. Younger campers, who can begin attending at age 8, are housed along the riverbanks and were the first to flood, according to the Associated Press.

The National Guard was deployed in Texas to respond after heavy rain on Friday morning caused the Guadalupe River to rise nearly 30 feet in 45 minutes. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later said that members of the U.S. Coast Guard were deployed to assist in evacuations.

Helicopters and military vehicles were used for evacuations. As of Friday night, 237 people had been evacuated, including 167 by helicopter.

I watched a video this morning showing a family driving their minivan straight into the flooded river. Despite so many warnings over and over telling people not to drive into floodwaters these idiots keep doing it.

Likewise there are endless stories of people getting killed because they stopped their car or truck on railroad tracks. Why they insist on stopping I don't know. But they keep doing it.

Some people never learn. Or they only learn in the last moments of their lives.

Canyon Lake resident here.

This is a mixed bag for us. We were in severe drought conditions when this hit, and all this water will do quite a bit to restore our extremely parched lake.

Like all things Texas, nothing that happens around here is "normal." We go from one extreme to the other. This is something most Texans are accustomed  to, but all these wooses from California in their minivans? Not so much.

Absolutely, Earl. This is prickly country. One minute you are tending your garden, and the next you have been bitten by a rattle snake, scorpion or fire ants. It's a wonderful place to live, but not a place for the timid or unprepared.

And, yes, I feel for the victims, especially the kids.

Yes Victor! It is a wonderful place to live (try buying property there now days) but if you do live there, even for a little while, you had better learn to keep your head on a swivel all the time if you are out and about.
