The White House posted an AI-generated photo of President Donald Trump depicted as the pope.
Trump attended Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome last weekend.
Days later, Trump joked that he’d “like to be pope,” adding, “that would be my number one choice.”
Cardinals are set to begin conclave on May 7 to elect the next pope.

The White House posted an AI-generated photo of President Donald Trump depicted as the pope on Friday, days after he joked that he’d “like to be pope.”

The image — which first appeared on Trump’s Truth Social account — comes as cardinals are set to begin conclave on May 7 to elect the next pope.

It’s childish.  The cardinals will be under enough pressure to elect a progressive.

I wonder if Trump posted this, or if one of his media staffers thought it would be funny?

Lighten up, folks.  This goes back to Trump's tongue-in-cheek answer to the question he was asked eàrlier in the week:  "who's your first choice for Pope?". The video clip has been replayed pretty often.  No one took it seriously.

I understand Trump's need to continually trigger his opponents, but very few Catholics, including me - who favored Trump 56-41 in 2024 -- will be amused by this.

In the post on Truth Social, the president did not write a caption but only shared the image of himself dressed in white papal robes with a cross around his neck:

The very same people upset by this were silent and even supportive of the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

That said, I don’t think Trump had anything to do with creating this AI image. And there were a couple of less artistic memes on social media with Trump dressed like the Pope days before this one popped up. He saw this one, thought it hilarious and he or someone else posted it on Truth Social. Bad optics for a President, absolutely, but it’s still just a fake photo. Like the dozens of AI photos that hit our social media page everyday.

A high-profile conservative Catholic group is demanding that Vice President Kamala Harris denounce the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence," a drag queen group, after it has been revealed that Harris posed with a member at a pride parade in San Francisco in 2019.

CatholicVote released an ad on Monday showing how Harris posed with the a drag queen from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in 2019, per Fox News. The drag group wears clothing suggesting they are nuns, lauding the LGBTQ+ agenda while belittling Christian symbols and sacraments. ...

New York cardinal takes Trump to task over AI pope image: ‘Wasn’t good’
by Rachel Scully - 05/04/25 9:23 AM ET

New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan disapproved of President Trump’s Truth Social post containing an AI image of himself as a pontiff. It was posted not two weeks after the death of Pope Francis and just days before cardinals gather at the Vatican to elect a new Catholic leader.

When asked by reporters about his thoughts on the late Friday post, Dolan replied that he hoped Trump “didn’t have anything to do with that.”

“Well, you know, it wasn’t good,” the cardinal added when asked whether he was offended by the post.

Dolan is part of Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission and has been an ally of the president. In December, Dolan said that the president “takes his Christian faith seriously.”

Trump even seemingly joked about Dolan being his pick for the next pope, according to USA Today.

However, Dolan is not alone in his criticism of the image showing Trump in full papal regalia. Bishop Thomas Paprocki, of Springfield, Ill., said the president should apologize.

“This is deeply offensive to Catholics especially during this sacred time that we are still mourning the death of Pope Francis and praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the election of our new Pope,” he wrote in a statement on the social platform X.

Why mock a group in which 56 percent of the members voted for you?  Typically, the Trumpsters here are pointing to leftist blasphemies that we supposedly never condemned. Well, I beg to differ. I was disgusted at The Last Supper depiction at the Olympics, as was every other Christian I know. Blasphemy is blasphemy. It isn't funny in any context, and in fact is worse when an ally does it.

I don't support any restriction on Trump's right to be an a-hole. But I reserve my right to call him out on it when he crosses the line, which is all too often.

Will someone please explain to me how Fauci's blasphemy excuses Trump's blasphemy? The point of highlighting Fauci's desecration is that it is WRONG. So how does that make Trump's promoting himself as the pope right?  Yet this is exactly what these mindless Trump butt sniffers do whenever Trump gets himself into trouble with his antics. It is childish, and counterproductive.

As most of you know, I voted for this guy. For the most part, I am happy with the vote, especially considering the alternative. But please have some decency and sensitivity. Just an ounce of it. I'd like to know that Trump can govern responsibly, and this does nothing to soothe the nerves of those of us who are watching his flip flopping on tariffs and other issues that will affect us profoundly moving forward.

At times the man seems less grounded than an 11-year old. Yes, he has the world eating out of his hand. That carries with it a certain responsibility to be statesmanlike enough not to portray yourself as God's messenger on earth.

He can't help himself.

Everyone who voted for him knew that going in.

I'll take the good things he does, but it does come with a pretty high price tag.

Classic Trump.  When he gets his opponents upset and emotionally riled, they lose the ability to think straight.  It greatly diminishes their effectiveness in opposing him.

All Christians are Christ's representatives on earth.  (Some good, some bad)

to the point that he is considered by Catholics to be infallible.

Uh, no.  Catholics do not consider the Pope to be infallible (incapable of erring).  The Pope is human just like the rest of us.  He is the final authority for the Church, but he can also make mistakes.

I am saying that as far as many Catholics are concerned, the papacy qualifies as a "sacred thing" under the definition of blasphemy. People do not necessarily worship sacred things, but they hold them in reverence for what they represent.

The Pope is a human being.  He is NOT sacred. He is NOT a sacred thing.  You cannot "blaspheme" when speaking about the Pope.

It's pertinent and certainly "relevant" to the discussion.

I am saying that as far as many Catholics are concerned, the papacy qualifies as a "sacred thing" under the definition of blasphemy. People do not necessarily worship sacred things, but they hold them in reverence for what they represent.

@massadvj

What is the source of that "sacred thing" quote?  I would like to see the Catholic source material that defines the Pope as a "sacred thing".  Thanks in advance.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

blas·phe·my
/ˈblasfəmē/
noun
the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things

To Catholics the pope is sacred. He is Jesus' representative on earth, to the point that he is considered by Catholics to be infallible.

Are you Roman Catholic @massadvj ?
