The Trump image was ill-advised and tacky, but it wasn't blasphemy. The pope is just a man, he is not the Son of God. Fauci seems to believe himself equal to Jesus Christ.

Classic Trump.  When he gets his opponents upset and emotionally riled, they lose the ability to think straight.  It greatly diminishes their effectiveness in opposing him.

Will someone please explain to me how Fauci's blasphemy excuses Trump's blasphemy?

Because Fauci gets paid more.

What Fauci did is, arguably, blasphemy. Not so much with Trump. What Trump did was unnecessary and pointless. Not blasphemy.

I understand Trump's need to continually trigger his opponents, but very few Catholics, including me - who favored Trump 56-41 in 2024 -- will be amused by this.

Very few of elderly Catholics will be amused by this --all the rest will chuckle and move on.

It's Donald Trump and his communications team, which probably includes some Dilley Memers. Do we expect anything different from him?

@massadvj

blas·phe·my
/ˈblasfəmē/
noun
the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things

To Catholics the pope is sacred. He is Jesus' representative on earth, to the point that he is considered by Catholics to be infallible.

Dedicated to or set apart for the worship of a deity.

Are you saying that Catholics worship the Pope?

He is Jesus' representative on earth

All Christians are Christ's representatives on earth.  (Some good, some bad)

to the point that he is considered by Catholics to be infallible.

Uh, no.  Catholics do not consider the Pope to be infallible (incapable of erring).  The Pope is human just like the rest of us.  He is the final authority for the Church, but he can also make mistakes.

He is only infallible when speaking "ex cathedra"...from the Chair...in terms of Catholic Doctrine.

Which translates that when speaking about illegal immigrants or Islam being our "brothers"...he's FOS!

I am saying that as far as many Catholics are concerned, the papacy qualifies as a "sacred thing" under the definition of blasphemy. People do not necessarily worship sacred things, but they hold them in reverence for what they represent.

The Pope is a human being.  He is NOT sacred. He is NOT a sacred thing.  You cannot "blaspheme" when speaking about the Pope.

It's pertinent and certainly "relevant" to the discussion.

@massadvj

What is the source of that "sacred thing" quote?  I would like to see the Catholic source material that defines the Pope as a "sacred thing".  Thanks in advance.
