Pope Francis has died on Easter Monday aged 88

By Devin Watkins

At 9:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

Pope Francis receives U.S. Vice President JD Vance, left, before bestowing the Urbi et Orbi (Latin for to the city and to the world) blessing at the end of the Easter mass presided over by Cardinal Angelo Comastri in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican Sunday, April 20, 2025. IMO, they should return to choosing an Italian Cardinal...one a minimum of 70 years of age.

Meet Cardinal Robert Sarah, who’s in the running to be the next Pontiff. He’s conservative, pro-life, anti-woke, and has compared Western woke liberal cultural trends to communism and Nazism.

Cardinal Robert Sarah is a Guinean Catholic prelate known for his influential roles in the Vatican and his conservative stance on Church teachings.

Born on June 15, 1945, in Ourous, Guinea, to a family of animist converts to Christianity, Sarah was inspired by missionary priests and entered the Saint Augustine Minor Seminary in Bingerville, Ivory Coast, at age 12. He was ordained a priest on July 20, 1969, in Conakry, Guinea, and later earned licentiates in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and in Scripture from the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem.

At 34, Sarah was appointed Archbishop of Conakry in 1979 by Pope John Paul II, becoming one of the world’s youngest bishops. He served during the oppressive regime of Ahmed Sékou Touré, resisting Marxist policies and maintaining the Church’s independence, earning widespread respect in Guinea. In 2001, he was named secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, serving nearly a decade. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum and elevated him to cardinal. From 2014 to 2021, Sarah served as prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments under Pope Francis, retiring at age 75.

A vocal advocate for traditional Catholic teachings, Sarah has emphasized sexual morality, the right to life, and liturgical reverence, often promoting practices like ad orientem worship.

He has criticized Western cultural trends, including gender ideology, abortion, and same-sex marriage, comparing their impact to historical ideologies like Nazism and communism. He has also denounced Islamist radicalism, particularly ISIS, for its threats to family structures. His 2023 “Dubia” to Pope Francis, alongside four other cardinals, sought clarity on doctrinal issues like same-sex blessings and women’s ordination, reflecting his orthodox concerns.

Certainly the Catholics face a pivotal decision.  I won’t question Francis’ sincerity, but he would have fit in with leaders of the mainline Protestant denominations from the past century.  Needless to say, it hasn’t gone well for their ministry.

What happens now that Pope Francis has died?
By Emily Crane
Published April 21, 2025, 4:33 a.m. ET

Pope Francis’ death will set in motion the Catholic Church’s elaborate and centuries-old procedure for electing a new pontiff.

The Vatican has detailed laws and rituals that will come into play in the coming weeks to ensure the transfer of power to the new pope after the old one dies.

From the mourning period to a conclave vote and ballot burning, here is what to expect in replacing the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics:

Sede vacante: The seat is vacant

The church enters a period known as “sede vacante” — a Latin phrase that translates to “empty seat” or “vacant seat” — when the Throne of Saint Peter is unoccupied.

Traditionally, this period can last several weeks as Pope Francis’ body lies in state, his funeral is held, and the Vatican prepares for the closed-door meeting to elect his successor.

During this time, the College of Cardinals will temporarily take over and assume limited powers — led by the camerlengo, or chamberlain.

Irish-born Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who is the church’s current camerlengo, will be in charge of running the administration and finances of the Holy See — otherwise known as the Catholic Church’s government.

Farrell will also oversee certifying Francis’ death, sealing the papal apartments and preparing for his burial.

Major decision-making in relation to the Vatican will be put on hold.

I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.

I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful.

May God rest his soul.

Scarborough: Hard-Right Inside the Church ‘Hated’ Pope Francis ‘for Being Christ-like’

Monday, on the heels of the news of Pope Francis’ passing, MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough launched a scathing attack on the so-called “hard-right” inside the Catholic Church.

Scarbourgh claimed the hard-right inside the church “hated” the recently deceased Pope for being “Christ-like.”

“I was just going say many on the hard right inside the church were shocked that this Pope would actually borrow from Jesus Christ and living that simple life, borrow from Jesus Christ, and they were radical words when he said it and it was like it was sounded the shot of a cannon. It just stunned everybody when the Pope said who am I to judge now? Why in the world would he say something that radical? I don’t know, maybe it’s because that’s exactly what Jesus said to the woman at the well when religious leaders were going to stun her to death and Jesus said as they dropped their rocks after saying let he who is without sin cast the first stone?”

“Jesus turned and said where are your accusers now? Well, I also don’t accuse you. Go and sin no more. And that’s the thing. Mika, his legacy was remarkable in that Jesus reached out to those who were shunned by religious leaders in society, the lepers, the tax collectors, the sinners like the woman at the well, and with France’s conservatives many conservatives inside the church hated him for being Christ-like in that respect, just as the religious leaders of His day hated Jesus, but Francis was unbowed and being inclusive while following the word of the Gospels. Many on the left were also disappointed as we heard in Chris’ package that often his words would not lead to changing church doctrine But even that approach mirrored Jesus who did save the woman at the well, said he held no judgment toward her and then said go and sin no more.”

Catholics worldwide are calling for this man to replace pope Francis. Too bad he's not a Cardinal.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Eligibility: Canon law states that any baptized Catholic male can be elected.

Cardinal Status: Since 1378, every Pope has been a cardinal.

Conclave: The cardinals under 80 years old gather to vote in a secret ballot until a new Pope is chosen with a two-thirds majority.

Practicality: While not explicitly stated in church regulations, the tradition of selecting a cardinal as Pope has become the norm

Vatican Announces Time and Date for Funeral of Pope Francis

Simon Kent 22 Apr 2025

The Vatican has decided the funeral for Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 local time in Rome.

A meeting of cardinals in the Vatican decided the time and date while confirming public viewing can begin Wednesday.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State (Prime Minister), is seen praying beside the body of Pope Francis in Vatican City, on April 21, 2025. The deceased spiritual leader of the Catholic Church lies in the chapel of the Santa Marta Guesthouse, which served as his residence during his papacy.

The BBC reports papal funerals have traditionally been elaborate affairs, but Pope Francis acted last year to simplify his arrangements. The outlet continued:

He will be the first Pope in more than a century not to be buried in the Vatican, in the crypt of St Peter’s Basilica – opting instead to be laid to rest in Rome’s Basilica of St Mary Major, near his favourite icon of the Madonna.

He also requested to be buried in a simple wooden casket, unlike his predecessors who were buried in the traditional three nesting coffins made of cypress, lead and oak.

Pope Francis’s funeral will take place outdoors in front of St Peter’s Basilica.

The dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, will lead the service, per the BBC report.

At the end of the funeral, Re will deliver the final commendation – a concluding prayer where the Pope will be formally entrusted to God – and the body moved for the burial.

Pope Francis – who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires – died early Monday morning at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, as Breitbart News reported.

He will be taken to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning ahead of the funeral ceremony, where his casket will remain until burial for the public to pay their respects.

In his final will, Francis specified he would be buried at St. Mary Major basilica outside the Vatican and home to his favorite icon of the Virgin Mary.

excerpt:

What happens immediately after the Pope dies?

In accordance with the "Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis," or the "Rite of Burial for Roman Pontiffs," Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell will preside over the certification of Francis' death and laying of his body in a coffin Monday evening, according to the Holy See Press Office.

Farrell is the Church's camerlengo, or cardinal chamberlain.
He is also tasked with securing the pope's room in Casa Santa Marta and removing the papal ring, the New York Times reported.
The piece of jewelry, named the Fisherman's Ring, is destroyed after a pope's death, and a new one is forged for the Church's next leader.

Zoom out: The next day, NBC reported, the College of Cardinals will gather to set plans for the pope's funeral.

The pope's funeral and interment must take place four to six days after his death. Weather permitting, the service traditionally takes place in St. Peter's Square.
The public mass will be presided over by the dean of the College of Cardinals, currently Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re — though it is unclear if the 91-year-old Re will continue the tradition, CBS notes.

His death also kicks off a nine-day mourning period, known as Novemdiales.
What changes did Francis approve for papal funerals?

Under the second edition of the Rite of Burial for Roman Pontiffs, approved by Pope Francis in April 2024, the pope's remains are immediately placed inside the coffin from which the public will view his body.

Previously, popes' bodies were placed on a raised platform rather than in an open casket for viewing.
Additionally, the guidelines moved the ascertainment of the pope's death to his chapel rather than his room.

The changes also nixed the tradition of having three caskets of cypress, lead and oak.

Pope Francis, instead, intended to be buried in one, zinc-lined wooden coffin.

.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

The last pope prophecy is about to be tested...

Just to be safe, I think I'd avoid being anywhere near Rome...

Here's hoping the next Pope is a Catholic and not a socialist.

Democrat Logic: Pope meets with JD Vance. Pope Dies hours later.  Trump had the Pope killed.

It took a while but they went there.

It was the Pope, not Breitbart having dinner with Bill Ayres.

Former President Joe Biden to Attend Pope Francis’s Funeral in Rome

Amy Furr 25 Apr 2025

Former President Joe Biden (D) plans to attend Pope Francis’s funeral in Rome.

The news comes after President Donald Trump announced he will be in attendance.

Former First Lady Jill Biden will accompany her husband to the funeral on Saturday to honor the late pope, who died at 88 years old, the Hill reported on Friday.

In a social media post on Monday, the day the Vatican announced the Catholic spiritual leader had died, Biden said, “Pope Francis will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of our time and I am better for having known him.”

The former president also said Pope Francis was “a Pope for everyone”:

Trump also reacted to the news of the pope’s passing in a statement posted online. He said, “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!” according to Breitbart News.

The president later signed an executive order to fly flags across the nation at half-staff in remembrance of Pope Francis. Breitbart News noted that Trump will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, at the funeral this weekend.
