Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who finished in second place to President Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, has distinguished himself from MAGA World by declaring his skepticism of long-term tariffs, remaining a hawk on Russia and coming out against proposals to tax the rich.

By calling out tariffs as “taxes on American consumers” and sticking to his view that Russia poses a serious threat to U.S. interests, Cruz may be laying the groundwork to run against Trump’s heir apparent, Vice President Vance, in a 2028 Republican primary.

“I think he’s carving out a position for himself as the defender of traditional conservatism,” Vin Weber, a Republican strategist, said of Cruz, who is 54.

“He’s a viable contender for president because he’s a brilliant conservative and he represents the largest Republican state,” he said.

A big potential obstacle for anyone seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2028 is Vance, who is 40.

Vance will likely be sullied by his time with the carnival barker. So probably not.

I would likely take Cruz over Vance and DeSantis over Cruz.
And it would take a bit of convincing to get me to vote for Cruz anymore.

Undecided.  I still fear for Trump's safety.  The whacky left wants him gone, and given POTUS likes of large open attended events?  I hold my breath every time he does one.

That alone impacts the dynamics of '28.  I'm also still undecided, but if pressed at this exact moment...   55-RDS/45- JDV

Was big supporter of Cruz in '16, but Trump ruined and broke him with "The Lyin Ted" meme.  That still sticks today, even in Texas.

mountaineer is right, Trump loves to zing just about everyone.  He will not run for POTUS in 2028.  By then, I am sure he will have had his fill.

The top contender for me is Gov Ron DeSantis.  I think he will run and lead the primary right to the end, with little real competitors along the way.

I can see Vance further down the road, but I can never envision Sen Cruz being POTUS.  What he did in the 2016 election destroyed his reputation to be considered seriously.  He is conservative, but I do not trust him, and I never will.  He should stay in his lane.

I think Rubio would run away with the election in 2028 as long as the Demonicrats don't derail the work being done.
