I watched footage of the race crime that split America. What I saw shocked me - and this is how it could flip the case

It was just after 10 a.m. on April 2, during what should have been a typical high school track meet at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Students were warming up and stretching, patiently waiting for the competition to resume after a paused due to heavy rain.

Spectators and some students took cover under a tent in the bleachers of Memorial High School.

The atmosphere was calm and uneventful - until it suddenly turned to bloodshed.

In a matter of seconds, then-17-year-old Karmelo Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, transforming a rain delay into a crime scene.

On Monday, the Daily Mail became one of only two news organizations granted access to surveillance footage of the deadly incident - a killing that shocked the nation and ignited debates about race, privilege and the criminal justice system.

The 40-minute surveillance video, recorded from a stationary camera on the opposite side of the football field, captures the 10 minutes leading up to the attack and the desperate efforts by Metcalf's twin brother and others to save his life before paramedics arrived.

Metcalf, a student at Memorial High School, was stabbed after confronting Anthony .  .  .

Karmelo Anthony, the teen who has admitted to stabbing and killing a fellow high school athlete at a track meet in Texas, has been indicted by a grand jury with first-degree murder.

Austin Metcalf, 17, bled out in his brother's arms after the attack by Anthony.

Fricso, Texas police have said the incident stemmed from Metcalf asking Anthony to leave his team tent since he didn't go to the same school.

Anthony, 17 at the time of the killing and now 18, was arrested shortly after and charged by police with first degree murder in a case that has drawn national attention over race and privilege.

Today's indictment comes after the local district attorney presented evidence to a grand jury, asking jurors to uphold the first-degree murder charge.

'For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony— which they did, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

'With that indictment, the case now moves formally into the court system. From this point forward, we’ll continue doing our part — fully and fairly — to pursue justice under the law. The trial schedule will be set by the court. But when the time comes, we’ll be ready.'

Grand jury proceedings are held behind closed doors ,and unlike most court hearings, are not open to the public.

Texas Teenager Karmelo Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of a 17-year-old at a high school track meet in April.

Anthony, also 17, was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday for allegedly killing Austin Metcalf after a dispute over a seat at the University Interscholastic League’s District 11-5A championship on April 2.

“For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony and — which they did,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a press conference Tuesday.

The case drew outrage after Anthony was freed on a $250,000 bond after the alleged stabbing, living it up with his family in a $900,000 home in a luxurious gated community of Richwoods in Frisco, Texas, where rent is an estimated $3,500 per month.

A neighbor said he even bought a new car after the alleged attack.

Still, he had convinced a judge to lower his bond from $1 million, citing financial hardship.

 Karmelo Anthony submitted an Indigent Packet to the Collin County Court, requesting court-appointed legal representation as an indigent (financially destitute) defendant.

This is after his givesendgo raised $538,000 for his legal defense.
