My mother and father and their families lived in Hungary for both world wars, in WWII Hungary was taken over by Germany, and then ‘liberated’ by the Russkies, of the two she said Russia was the worst…..now that is aying something.
Actually, it was generally agreed that unless you were a Jew, a Gypsy or a homosexual, the Soviets were worse than the Nazis. I recall the remarks of someone who was tortured by both the Gestapo and the NKVD (predecessor of the KGB), that being tortured by the NKVD was far worse -- the Gestapo only tortured you until you gave them the information they wanted or they concluded you didn't have it or it became moot, the NKVD just tortured you.
