The Trump administration is tightening the screws on the Kremlin, warning that a failure to reach a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine by the end of April will trigger a new wave of U.S. sanctions.

According to a report by Axios, citing sources familiar with the talks, the ultimatum has already been relayed to Moscow through Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, who is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 11.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the urgency last week, stating the U.S. isn’t willing to wait “months” for Putin’s decision. “Weeks” is all the Kremlin has, he emphasized during an April 4 statement.

So far, multiple rounds of diplomacy have produced little.

Russian and American envoys have met face-to-face at least six times in the past two months, including two meetings last week alone. Still, concrete progress remains elusive.

According to The Moscow Times, during talks in Saudi Arabia in late March, Russian negotiators demanded the full administrative territory of four Ukrainian regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson.

Such demands have reportedly hardened the U.S. stance, with Trump’s team now exploring broader sanctions — including targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” involved in covert oil shipments....

Dynamics have changed since these talks began.

Oil has dropper from the $70's to $50's /bbl. Putin hand has gotten weaker in the past few weeks.  Need a huge effort to open the spigots and help drive it down further to their $50/bbl profitability break point. Then watch him squirm.

Seems that Trump has learned a very hard lesson about trying to negotiate anything with the Russians...

Yeah, that two weeks resolved prediction, just didn't pan out.  But if events of the past week and oil creeps down to about $50/bbl, Vlad will be bringing his knee pads.

So how many final warnings does Putin get from Trump?

 :pootrump:

To successfully negotiate with a Russian:

1. Kill the Russian
2. State your terms.

Because only dead Russians keep their promises.

Putin's not Trump's bitch, but Zelensky is.  Trump has no leverage over Putin but to open the spigot of weapons and training to the Ukrainian military.

If Trump wants leverage over Putin, he needs to:

- seize or sink Russia's ghost fleet of rusted oil tankers
- help Moldova regain control over Transnistria
- provide covert support to resistance movements in Belarus
- contribute what Ukraine needs to start taking back Russian-occupied territory

Putin will only negotiate if he's losing.

Right now, Putin is winning because of Trump's and Republicans' public non-support of Ukraine.

A desperate and crestfallen Trump may seek peace at any cost just so he can falsely claim he ended the war.

Any peace agreement that let's Russia keep seized Ukrainian territory is just a temporary respite in hostilities.  Putin will continue asymmetrical warfare against Ukraine and the Baltic nations.

Putin needs all of Ukraine and control of all Ukrainians to maintain power in Russia because of the historical, cultural, religious, economic, military, and linguistic connections between the two.

The reality for Ukraine is that it is going to have to give up territory.

The other reality is that Russia is going to have to accept that the rest of Ukraine is going to be part of NATO.

Bottom line is that this is Europe's baby, and they need to do the dealing. No more heavy lifting by the US, other than it's NATO obligations.

Rich accusation considering how you whore yourself to China for cheap iPhones and anyone else who opposes Trump, for any insurrectionist and seditious reason.

Nothing screams ‘patriot’ like a Magaoid worshiping a guy who got publicly humiliated by Vladimir Putin — not on stage, but when Putin laughed off Trump's pathetic ‘peace plan’ like a child scribbling with crayons. Trump groveled to a dictator for approval and got tossed aside like garbage, and you’re still here begging for scraps. This is America — I’ll exercise my First Amendment right to call out cowards and traitors. Try to turn me in, comrade. I dare you. Just remember: your loyalty isn’t to the flag. It’s to a washed-up puppet who even Putin won’t take seriously.

I have seen several postings here where people believe that Zelinski should be willing to give up parts of Ukraine to Russia for peace

For those who have that position, ask yourselves, what would your position be if we were invaded by a hostile, outside force, unprovoked and an American president let the aggressor keep some US territory in exchange to stop the hostilities?

Would you see that president as a man of peace or an appeaser and/or a quisling?

The guarantees that the US gave to Ukraine in the Budapest memorandum are why Ukraine was disarmed of nukes and long range weapons. The US is responsible for Ukraine's vulnerabilities.

Since Trump has decided to trash most of America's post-Cold-War foreign policy stance, perhaps he can do the world a favor and trash one more bit of it:  nuclear non-proliferation.  Counties friendly to the US (yes, despite Trump's trashing of the world economy with his stupid tariffs -- meaning all of them except the ones on China -- and going soft on our NATO commitments, there still are some) should be encouraged to have their own nuclear deterrent.  A nuclear armed Ukraine, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan (and for that matter Australia, Poland, Germany, Sweden...) would each in their own way make world affairs more congenial to American interests.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.
