Forgive my ignorance here. Not knowing what a PSA test is, I'm pretty sure I've never gotten one. I also haven't have a doctor since 2011 (thank you, Obamacare). Is this a blood test? Can I get one at a wellness clinic? And what number is bad? Thanks. My wife would be pissed if I died.
Prostate specific antigen. It is one of the few early indicators of Prostate Cancer. "Normal" readings depend on age, but generally (according to Google)
Age-Specific Guidelines:
40-49 years: The 95th percentile (meaning 95 out of 100 men in this age group would have a PSA level below this) is around 2.5 ng/mL.
50-59 years: The 95th percentile is typically around 3.5 ng/mL.
60-69 years: The 95th percentile is generally around 4.5 ng/mL.
70+ years: The 95th percentile can be higher, with some sources suggesting up to 6.5 ng/mL.
While a slightly high PSA does not necessarily mean cancer (BPH can cause elevated PSA, too), it is a flag. Mine was slightly elevated, saw a Urologist, was biopsied (12X) and no cancer. I take a supplement with Saw Palmetto in it, and my PSA actually went down a little.
A friend, though, got his checked after a few years, and it came back 800. Short of a miracle, I will have one less friend in this life by the end of the year. The cancer has metastasized and is aggressive.
A few of the people I grew up around died of this, a relative and some friends, although there is some family grouping (three brothers who were friends) I don't know if those four guys were exposed to something environmental of if genetics plays a role.
I get mine checked every six months. If you are over sixty, I'd recommend at least once a year.
