The Racial Content of Advertising
By Jeffrey Folks

In an advertisement currently running on TV, a young white male kneels on his front lawn, trimming the grass one blade at a time with a nail clipper.  Next door, a slightly older black male sits comfortably on his porch, scanning his automated payroll accounts with an air of confidence and superiority as he looks askance at his foolish neighbor.

In another ad, a large, middle-aged black woman dances and sings her way through the supermarket aisles, waited upon entirely by whites.  At one point, she stands still, looking doubtfully at a middle-aged white male who has taken a break from mopping the floors.  In the end, she breezes out of the store, her cart filled by white employees overjoyed to serve her.

In yet another ad, two young girls are selling something like Girl Scout cookies — one using a payment app and another relying on cash.  The black girl who uses the app has sold her entire wagonload of goods before the other has sold much of anything.  At the end, the black girl wheels her wagon off with a baseball glove and ball inside (indicating she is headed out to play), looking back with a knowing smile at her less clued-in white neighbor.

These are just a few of the dozens of ads now airing that depict whites in a demeaning manner and blacks as their superiors in intelligence and ability.

Oh well.

Portray me as a dumba$$, and I just might be too stupid to buy what you're selling.

In fact, I can be really dumbed down when it suits me. :tongue2:

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

To me it's the white female black male interracial ads... nearly ever single one. I'm not opposed to those sorts of relationships, but clearly they are pushing something.

I boycott such companies that push social agendas. I especially hate the crap of referring to a known man or woman as they/them/they're instead of by his or her properly gendered pronouns.

I am not a 'they'.

I don't watch television any more, with 2 exceptions:
Jeopardy
Wheel of Fortune.

During weekends, I don't even turn the tv on.
The only time it's turned on is for the above 2 shows.

And even then... I always mute the volume during commercials, and do other things that need to be done. As an old, racially-conscious white male, I find most commericals these days insulting.

I don't even pay for streaming anymore. Since J and WofF only air on ABC (at least here, there is no low-cost option to get them via streaming), I was previously paying YouTubeTV $70 a month -- again, only to watch those two shows.

I finally had enough, and cancelled the streaming. Went with no tv at all for a couple of months.

There's an ABC affiliate with a transmitting tower about 30 miles from here, but the roof antenna came down at least 30 years ago and I didn't want to try putting one back up. So... I did a little research and decided to build my own antenna.

I got some wire, some 1x2, bought a 75-300 ohm transformer for $5, and built a "hilbilly antenna" in the shape of a "T". Mounted it on an old mic stand from my home studio days.

So now at 7pm, I set up my antenna, watch both the shows, and when they're over I turn the tv off and put the antenna away.

The tv I have is a 10-year-old Samsung 40" "dumb" tv.
I'll probably never buy another.

A few years ago we ended our DISH Network subscription when the programming across the board had become so unwatchable that there was simply no point.

We are down to You Tube Premium so we can watch most content without commercials and we also get Amazon Prime programming which we bought for free shipping and the old TV shows are just a bonus.

We watched the first episode of "Route 66" last night. It was from 1960 and even then the show launched off with a message on racial tolerance. We won't be watching a second episode.
