The Trump administration's informal end-of-April deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine is drawing near without any commitments from the Kremlin.

Why it matters: U.S.-Russia talks have shown little clear progress and President Trump's promise of a swift peace deal appears nowhere near fruition. Still, he insisted Thursday that a ceasefire was getting closer and that he'd be "hearing from Russia this week."

Driving the news: Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that Trump was prepared to abandon peace talks altogether within a "matter of days."

"We're not going to continue to fly all over the world and do meeting after meeting after meeting if no progress is being made," Rubio said.

He did not blame either side or say whether the U.S. would impose any costs before walking away.

In response, the Kremlin argued that progress had already been made but said no further contacts with the U.S. were planned for this week.

Behind the scenes: White House envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin for more than four hours last Friday in St. Petersburg.

Witkoff said he emerged with a clearer idea of Putin's demands for a peace settlement.

But he didn't get Putin's approval for a 30-day ceasefire plan Trump has been pushing for six weeks as a first step toward longer-term peace, and which Ukraine has signed off on.

European countries continue to increase their domestic defense production, including in support of Ukraine. German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger stated on April 17 that the Rheinmetall AG Unterlub plant will produce 350,000 artillery shells in 2025 - 150,000 more than the 200,000 originally planned for 2025 - and that the company has so far invested about €600 million (roughly $682 million) in the Unterlub site.[

Papperger stated that he expects Rheinmetall to earn €300 billion (roughly $340 billion) in sales in the next five years (until roughly 2030). The Czech engineering company PBS Group announced on April 16 that it will increase its production capacity of aircraft jet engines by 220 percent in 2025 in response to increased demand from global customers, including Ukraine.

A Chinese government-linked satellite company provided intelligence to the Houthis, according to US officials speaking to the Financial Times on April 17. This intelligence could support Houthi attacks against US vessels and commercial shipping, which demonstrates how the Houthis are continuing to cooperate with US adversaries to disrupt global trade. The US government raised concerns to the Chinese government about Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. (CGSTL) providing satellite intelligence to the Houthis.

The Chinese government reportedly ignored these concerns. CGSTL has ties to the Chinese military through China's military-civilian “fusion” program, which aims to integrate private sector work with military research and development, according to research done by a Washington-based security consulting firm. CGSTL’s provision of satellite intelligence to the Houthis is part of ongoing Chinese, Russian, and Iranian support to the Houthis. Houthi-owned military communications and domestic surveillance companies have reportedly imported Chinese-made communications equipment.

Iran and Russia have provided targeting intelligence to the Houthis, which aids Houthi attacks on international shipping. The Yemeni coast guard and Omani customs have previously seized shipments of Chinese-made military equipment to the Houthis, such as hydrogen fuel cells for powering missiles and drone propellers. The Houthis reportedly told China and Russia in March 2024 that the Houthis would not target Chinese and Russian-flagged vessels transiting the Red Sea, according to several sources with knowledge on Houthi leadership discussions.

Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on April 17 and delivered a message from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to Putin.

Araghchi stated that Khamenei’s message addressed important regional and international developments as well as bilateral issues. Araghchi emphasized that Russo-Iranian relations are stronger and more respectful than ever before and noted that the recently-signed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement elevated the relationship between Iran and Russia to a strategic level. Araghchi emphasized the importance of close coordination with Russia and China on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Iran, China, and Russia issued a joint statement on March 14 that condemned US sanctions on Iran and defended the Iranian nuclear program “as peaceful.”

Ukraine attacks continue amid Easter pleas for peace

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Weekend shelling by Russian forces killed at least seven civilians, Ukrainian officials reported Sunday as Pope Francis and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby used their traditional Easter messages to highlight the war in Ukraine and other conflicts around the world.

While Russia continued to concentrate on seizing all of Ukraine’s industrial east, two other provinces – Kharkiv in the northeast and Zaporizhzhia in the southeast - came under missile, rocket and artillery fire, the Ukrainian military reported. The governor of the Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said two communities there were hit by bombs from warplanes late Sunday, but he did not immediately report any casualties.

Kharkiv governor Oleh Syniehubov said two men died Sunday in shelling in Kupiansk, a city that Russia held before Ukrainian forces regained control of almost all of the province.

The city remained under attack later Sunday as Russian forces targeted residential areas with multiple rocket launchers, Syniehubov said. Elsewhere in the province, a 30-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after Russian shelling of the city of Chuhuiv, he said on Telegram.  .  .

Ukraine supports the initiative of UN Secretary General Antonio Gutterish to introduce the Easter Four-Day “Humanitarian Pause” in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday (21 April) said Russia had rejected a proposal for a truce over the Orthodox Christian Easter period this weekend but added he still harbored hopes for peace.

Zelenskyy made the remarks in a video address. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday proposed a four-day humanitarian pause to the fighting during the Orthodox Easter period. It was not immediately clear which truce proposal Zelenskyy was referring to.

There was no immediate Russian comment.
The Orthodox Easter service starts late on Saturday into Sunday morning. Both Ukrainians and Russians are predominantly Orthodox Christians, and mark Easter Sunday on 24 April.

A Ukrainian association of churches and religious communities separately proposed an Easter truce, and the head of Ukraine's Orthodox church urged Ukrainians to forgo night-time Easter services, fearing Russian bombardment.  .  .  .
