Excerpts from the video transcript.

[ Ukrainians Set an Unprecedented Artillery Kill Count to Undermine Russian Summer Offensive! ]

Today [ Apr 08, 8 pm ], there are a lot of interesting updates from the Lyman direction ... Ukrainian forces shattered Russian artillery in record-breaking numbers, crippling Moscow’s plans for a massive offensive in the Borova-Lyman sector. Now, as General Drapatyi and the elite 3rd Assault Corps assemble a ferocious defensive line, incredible losses will become an inevitable reality for the Russian offensive plan ... Russian offensive planning relies heavily on massive artillery barrages to pave the way for mechanized and infantry assaults. To take advantage of this, Ukrainians have prioritized the destruction of Russian artillery, aiming to disrupt Russian preparations by preventing them from conducting large preparatory barrages. To reduce the risk of Ukrainian counter-battery fire and destruction by FPV drones and heavy-lift octocopters, Russian artillery is positioned 12-15 km behind the frontlines. However, concealment remains difficult even in these rear areas, as the mostly towed artillery guns are constrained to emplacements with heavy concealment ...

Russians often follow their artillery doctrine, which says to relocate only after coming under fire, an inflexible approach that only compounds their losses, as accurate Ukrainian drone strikes often only need one hit to disable or destroy the enemy gun. Ukraine destroyed 1,644 Russian artillery pieces and mortars in March alone, over 3 times the monthly average of the previous 2 years. By purely targeting Russian artillery, Ukrainians are forcing the Russians to increasingly relocate and conceal their heavy guns, which significantly weakens the effectiveness of Russian fire support in and of itself ... The defense of the Borova sector specifically is significantly bolstered by the new 3rd Army Corps, formed from the Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade. Expanded to an entire army corps, they now enjoy greater operational autonomy and access to advanced engineering resources to build fortifications. Months of combat have provided them with intimate knowledge of the terrain, allowing them to build each defensive structure exactly where and how it is needed, and incorporate it much more effectively into their defensive operations.

At the heart of the corps is the 3rd Assault Brigade, a well-trained, disciplined, and highly motivated unit that employs NATO-style tactics tailored to the unique battlefield conditions in Ukraine. This is why the 3rd Army Corps is modeled after the operational style of the 3rd Assault Brigade. The Army Corps command continues to integrate the remaining brigades to match the combat effectiveness of the 3rd Assault Brigade. Its professionalism and strong presence on social media have appealed to thousands of Ukrainian and foreign volunteers, attracting between 1,000-2,000 new recruits each month, significantly bolstering their numbers ahead of the Russian summer offensive ...Given the persistent attrition of Russian artillery and the surge of new recruits into the Third Assault Corps, Russians are likely to encounter great difficulties in breaching Ukrainian defenses once they decide to launch their summer offensive.

The V-BAT Vertical Landing & Take Off, Low Cost, Combat-Proven, Hive-Minded Drone.

V-BAT Drone Has Proven Its Ability To Operate In Heavily-Contested Skies
Branded Content: V-BAT can fly for many hours, operates from pretty much anywhere and is rapidly evolving with new capabilities.

https://www.twz.com/sponsored-content/v-bat-drone-has-proven-its-ability-to-operate-in-heavily-contested-skies

Excerpt:
V-BATs were initially tested in Ukraine in June 2024 to evaluate how they performed in the face of just this kind of enemy interference. According to a Ukrainian report the V-BATs were able to operate unhindered, even when they flew very close to Ukrainian jamming systems. A follow-up battlefield experiment in Ukraine in August saw V-BATs locate Russian surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries before relaying targeting data back to Ukrainian forces so that M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HiMARS, could attack and destroy the SAM sites. Armor Harris is Shield AI’s vice president of aircraft engineering, where he leads the development of V-BAT. Harris came to Shield AI from SpaceX, where he was the responsible engineer for developing the propulsive landing capability on Falcon 9 and was also head engineer for the Starlink satellite constellation.

“V-BAT is able to operate without GPS in a hostile communications-jamming environment. It can fly into an area, locate and identify targets, and fly missions way out ahead of fighter aircraft. Historically, the suppression of enemy air defense [SEAD] mission has been considered to be a role for fighter aircraft, but now we’ve proved in Ukraine that a V-BAT in the danger zone can team with a stand-off weapon such as HiMARS to execute the mission, which is a very effective strategy.”

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 8, 2025

Excerpts:
Ukrainian forces recently captured Chinese nationals fighting in the Russian military in several areas of Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on April 8 that Ukrainian forces captured several Chinese “fighters” who were fighting for Russia near Bilohorivka (east of Siversk) and Tarasivka (northeast of Pokrovsk) in recent attacks and that Ukrainian intelligence indicated that there are “significantly more Chinese nationals” in the Russian military.  Zelensky noted that Ukrainian forces came into contact with a group of 6 Chinese fighters during several recent attacks and captured 2. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) summoned the Chinese charge d’affairs in response to the incident

Russian forces have spent the last 13 months and lost over five divisions’ worth of tanks and thousands of troops attacking towards Pokrovsk and trying to seize the town. Ongoing Russian offensive operations to seize Pokrovsk and attack Kostyantynivka highlight Russian President Vladimir Putin's determination to seize all of Ukraine through military means at whatever cost if he cannot do so through negotiations. Trehubov estimated in February 2025 that Russian forces were losing 14,000 to 15,000 casualties, including roughly 7,000 killed in action (KIA), each month in the Pokrovsk direction - suggesting that Russian forces lost up to 45,000 casualties in the Pokrovsk direction in the first three months of 2025

The Kremlin is considering passing a bill that may incentivize volunteer recruitment for conscription-age men ages 18 to 30 years old. Kremlin newswire TASS reported on April 4 that it obtained a copy of a recommendation from the Russian State Duma Defense Committee suggesting that Duma deputies adopt an amendment to the “On Military Duty and Military Service” federal law that would exempt Russian volunteers who fought in Ukraine or likely Kursk Oblast for longer than six months from Russia's compulsory conscription for men aged 18 to 30 years old.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 9, 2025

Excerpts:

Russia continues to utilize North Korean troops in Kursk Oblast, but ISW has not yet observed indications that North Korean troops are operating as combat forces in Ukraine. Syrskyi stated that Ukraine has observed at least two waves of North Korean forces training and replenishing their forces, presumably on the frontline or in near-rear areas, and that North Korean forces continue to operate against Ukrainian forces in Kursk Oblast.

Syrskyi stated that there are currently 623,000 Russian military personnel fighting against Ukraine. Syrskyi stated that Russian forces are “increasing the number” of personnel in Ukraine by 8,000 to 9,000 new personnel per month through contract recruitment and that the Russian force grouping fighting against Ukraine increased from about 603,000 on January 1, 2025 to 623,000 just over three months later. North Korean forces fighting in Ukraine itself would likely mark a decision point for Western and Pacific countries concerned about North Korean escalation in the war in Ukraine and the continued combat experience North Korean forces gain fighting alongside Russian forces.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) denied sending military personnel to fight in Ukraine following Ukrainian reports of Chinese nationals fighting alongside Russian forces. PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Spokesperson Lin Jian stated on April 9 that the PRC did not deploy military personnel to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, emphasizing that the PRC consistently urges its citizens to avoid involvement in armed conflicts.

I see the Ukrainians used a $5,000 drone to destroy one of Russia's $100,000,000 TU-22 strategic bombers.

Excerpts from the video transcript.

[ Ukrainians Launch a Preemptive Counter-Offensive Ahead of the Russian Summer Offensive!]

Today [ Apr 09, 8 pm ], there are important updates from the Lyman direction. Ukrainian commanders launched a preemptive counteroffensive to disrupt the Russian plans to expand their bridgeheads. With recent information that the Russians are gathering significant forces for a renewed assault, this could be another make-or-break moment for the Ukrainian defense. The Russian military ... objective now is to widen the crossings and bring in reinforcements to launch a broader push, once conditions allow.  With the spring mud season approaching fast, there is little time left for Russia to solidify its presence. Adding to the pressure, there is only one hardened road leading from Svatove, the main Russian logistical hub, toward Borova. If the Russians fail to secure this route and broaden their bridgehead, any serious offensive risks collapsing under logistical strain, especially once the terrain becomes impassable for armored vehicles.

Ukrainian forces have taken the initiative. The Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps, particularly the 3rd Assault Brigade acted to deny the Russians the opportunity to transform their fragile foothold into a viable launchpad by destroying the bridgehead before any potential assault. Ukrainian troops have begun reclaiming positions along the 3rd Assault Brigade’s area of responsibility, as part of a deliberate effort to squeeze the Russians out. The bridgehead the Russians hold here is the narrowest along the Zherebets River line, and that makes it the most fragile. If Ukraine maintains pressure and control in this area, Russia will be unable to move armored vehicles west, and the road will be reduced to a liability, constantly targeted, under fire, and of little use to a stalled Russian effort amidst worsening terrain conditions.

Ukrainians learned that focusing their drone operations on the front line now, Ukrainians will be able to push Russians back over the river, and stabilize the front. This will allow Ukrainians to then concentrate fully on targeting enemy logistics. This counterattack, therefore, is more than a defensive response. It is a preemptive strike to collapse the foundation of a planned Russian offensive before it even begins, and timing is everything. Russian forces reportedly gathered as many as 30,000 troops for a renewed assault in the Borova-Liman direction. If Ukraine can derail that buildup now, they will have spoiled Russian plans to advance to the Oskil River with a single, decisive campaign. Overall, Ukraine’s counterattack along the Zherebets River is a calculated move to sabotage the foundation of Russia’s next offensive before it gets off the ground. Turning the terrain, timing, and firepower advantage squarely in Ukraine’s favor can potentially force the Russian command to change plans for their spring campaign in this direction.
