Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 3, 2025
https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-april-3-2025

Russia is facing significant military and economic challenges that could seriously compromise Russia's ability to wage its war in Ukraine, factors that could increase the Kremlin's desire to accomplish its objectives in a mediated ceasefire or peace negotiation in the short-term if possible. The ODNI report assessed that Russia has suffered significant casualties in Ukraine and that Russia must contend with the poor quality of its new recruits.

The US Treasury Department announced on April 2 that the United States lifted sanctions on Karina Rotenberg, the wife of Russian businessman and oligarch Boris Rotenberg.

The Rotenberg Files is an investigative project based on a leak of over 50,000 records, including nearly 30,000 emails and some 12,000 documents, that shed light on how Russia's most infamous oligarchs, the Rotenberg brothers, dealt with being sanctioned by the West.

Boris and Arkady Rotenberg were childhood friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin, became billionaires under his rule, and are widely considered to be among his closest allies. So it was little surprise that they were sanctioned by the United States in 2014, and later by the European Union, in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea.

The emails, which cover the period between 2013 and 2020, come from Moscow-based Evocorp, an asset management company belonging to Maxim Viktorov, a Russian businessman. Viktorov turns out to be a key figure in the Rotenbergs’ maintenance of their assets and businesses around the world after they were sanctioned.

Over 60 journalists from 17 outlets spent three months analyzing the documents and conducting further reporting. They found a number of complex strategies, coordinated by Viktorov and his team and executed by a range of Western enablers - including lawyers, business consultants, bankers, and corporate service providers - that helped the Rotenbergs try to disguise their ownership of assets, move money, and relocate businesses to friendly jurisdictions.

Russian gas titan Gazprom faces $180 billion loss crisis

03/27/2025

The Russian gas company is facing potential losses of approximately $180 billion. To mitigate this situation, the company plans mass layoffs and asset sales. According to the "Financial Times," gas supplies to Europe and Turkey in 2025 are expected to be more than five times lower than they were in 2019.

Information obtained by the "Financial Times" indicates that Gazprom's expenses are set to exceed its revenues this year. Once a symbol of Russia's energy prowess, the company is now forced to make drastic cuts to operational costs. As part of a cost-saving program, Gazprom put several buildings up for sale in February. The Moscow Times does not shy away from harsh realities, describing Gazprom's gas business situation as "catastrophic."

Reports from the St. Petersburg portal 47news state that at the beginning of the year, the company considered laying off as many as 1,600 employees from its headquarters. Vice President Elena Ilyukhina reportedly submitted a request for staff reductions. Gazprom spends approximately $500 million annually on salaries for its 4,100 headquarters employees.  .  .

RDS/RDVS. RUSSIAN STRELKOV MOVEMENT
https://t.me/RDS_Official_channel

From his prison cell, April 4, 2025, Girkin writes the following:
IGOR STRELKOV: I WANT TO HOPE THAT THE ENEMY WILL NOT SUCCESS WITH HIS "COUNTER-OFFENSIVES" AGAIN !

In general, we can state that we have already failed the spring-summer campaign - which is still to come - not lost, but failed! We still have to lose it ( it is possible that the loss will not be very noticeable, or even completely unnoticeable for the average person, but not for the specialists in the enemy camp, unfortunately ... ) Once again, we have done nothing to start winning the war [ and it is already April, and even if the necessary measures begin tomorrow, the first positive effect from them will not be felt until August-September ( and even then, it is not a fact ) ]. For us, another [ even a "no man's land", or even with some minor tactical successes ( like the liberation of Ugledar, etc. ) ] "indecisive" military campaign is already a defeat, since this is "another step" not to victory, but strictly the opposite in that "war of attrition", the conditions of which we frivolously considered advantageous for ourselves (and, in fact, they were simply imposed on us from the outside ).

In addition, it is not at all impossible that the enemy will be able to more or less successfully inflict a series of painful blows on us ( I am traditionally most worried about the Crimean direction, but not only ). Then the negative effect of another protracted and bloody campaign will be even worse than is currently expected. ( Although, of course, I cannot rule out and I WANT TO HOPE THAT THE ENEMY WILL AGAIN SUCCEED WITH HIS "COUNTER-OFFENSIVES", but the recent "raid on the Kursk region" does not give any particular reason for optimism ).

"You can't put your head on someone else's shoulders." I see again and again how our leadership's "own desires" become "a guideline for formulating an analytical picture and a point of application of efforts, regardless of their correspondence to the actual situation." The leadership wants a "compromise peace on its own terms"? - This means that all other possible developments are ignored ( as are the measures required in "unplanned cases" ). Well, we have already seen the results of such "reality planning from above" in 2014 ( in Donbass ) , 2015 ( in Syria ), 2022 ( twice - at the beginning of the SVO and during the pathetic attempts to get out of it through the "Istanbul agreements" ). We are seeing it now ... What all this will ultimately lead to - I have already written and said, probably, hundreds of times. I will not repeat myself.
With respect and gratitude, I. V. Girkin 02.04.2025

[ Ceasefire Broken! Ukrainians Obliterate Russian Bases in Immediate Response! ]

Today [ Apr 04, 8 pm ], there is important news from the Russian Federation. just a week after it was signed, Russia shattered the energy ceasefire with a massive wave of missile and drone strikes aimed at Ukrainian power plants. In response, Ukraine unleashed a powerful retaliation, not targeting Russian energy infrastructure, but instead aimed straight at Russian strategic airbases. The recent statements of the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, officially stated that Russia reserves the right not to follow the ceasefire, as he added that Russian strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities will persist, claiming that Ukraine violated the ceasefire first. Russia had already drawn the ceasefire into question, demanding the removal of sanctions on state-owned Russian banks and financial institutions, as an additional prerequisite for the ceasefire, despite it already having been signed. Peskov also claimed that the European Union’s refusal to lift sanctions on Russia, indicates the unwillingness to put an end to the war, regardless of whether Russian demands were made in hindsight. To create a justification for their own violation of the ceasefire, Russian forces staged a false flag attack in the Kursk region, where they sabotaged the Sudzha gas measuring station, framing it as a Ukrainian air strike that broke the agreement.

As Ukrainians never restarted the gas transit, there was no reason for Russians to repair the pipes and restore gas flow to the Sudzha measuring station, other than to instigate a false-flag sabotage operation. Despite this, Russians used it as a justification to once again restart their drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, launching 43 missiles and 74 drones, of which the Ukrainians intercepted 30 and 47, respectively. Ukrainians are actively refraining from breaking the energy ceasefire themselves as a response, hoping to show the international community which side is the aggressor. However, in retaliation, Ukrainians instead targeted Russian strategic military targets, to disarm Russian striking capabilities, and prevent further damage to Ukrainian energy facilities.

Ukrainians launched a drone strike against the Shaykovka airbase in the Kaluga region, where Russian strategic Tu-22 bombers are located. This airbase is also one of just 2 Russian airbases operating the scarce Tu-22 jets near Ukraine, to be used as a refueling and rearming point for Russian aircraft conducting strikes. Overall, the Russians are trying to fully cancel the ceasefire agreement, and used a false flag sabotage operation as justification to restart their missile strikes against the Ukrainian energy sector, which caused power outages across Ukraine. In retaliation, rather than target energy infrastructure themselves, Ukraine sought to disarm Russian strike capabilities, targeting strategic Russian airbases. In his evening address, President Zelensky stated that for several weeks now, they have had the American proposal for an unconditional ceasefire. And almost every day, in response to this proposal, there are Russian drones, bombs, and missiles striking Ukrainian cities. He underlines how the attacks demonstrate an unwillingness to seek a lasting peace, urging further international pressure and sanctions on Moscow, and more air defense to counter Russian airstrikes, compelling Russia to negotiate.

Excerpts from the video transcript:

[ Russian Flank Attack Backfires Spectaculary! ]

Today [ Apr 05, 8 pm ], there are a lot of interesting updates from the Siversk direction.

Here, in a bold shift of strategy, Russian forces changed their approach to seize the high ground south of Bilohorivka to break and end the stalemate where thousands of Russian soldiers were eliminated before. However, as Ukrainians executed a swift response, Russian plans completely fell apart, as the increasing Russian armor shortage left no hope for their soldiers of making it to Ukrainian positions alive ... the main Russian offensive focus is on Bilohorivka, as taking the village would allow them to open up Ukrainian defenses and advance towards Siversk. However, Russians faced significant difficulties already at the first hurdle, losing thousands of soldiers and still being unable to take the small settlement even after two years of heavy fighting.

Natural obstacles, such as the Siversky Donets River and the Kreminna Forest, further reinforce Ukrainian defenses by hindering Russian flanking maneuvers from the north. Notably, one of Russia’s most devastating defeats occurred here early in the war when an entire battalion tactical group was wiped out attempting to cross the river. However, to the south, toward Zolotarivka, we can see that Ukrainian fire control is limited due to a higher-elevation hill ridge and dense forest, which blocks the direct line of sight for Ukrainian positions. Russian forces sought to use Zolotarivka as a staging ground to advance westward toward 2 critical supply routes supporting Ukrainian troops in Bilohorivka and the chalk quarry. A successful push could encircle Ukrainian defenders, forcing their withdrawal and enabling a Russian advance over the hill ridge into the lowlands. This would also drastically reshape the battle for the Serebryansky Forest, compelling Ukrainian forces to shift to an all-around defense against Russian attacks from 3 directions.

Although this was Russia’s best tactical option, repeated attempts still ended in disaster ...  the winter’s lack of vegetation exposed them to early detection and devastating Ukrainian fire, leading to heavy losses. Additionally, as recent successful Ukrainian operations have forced the Russian high command to prioritize other offensive efforts, Russian forces here have been unable to replenish their armored losses, having to rely instead on motorcycles, ATVs, and buggies to cross open fields. Overall, the Ukrainian defense of Bilohorivka, layered and well-planned, has effectively repelled repeated Russian assaults on the southern flank. Russian forces, suffering heavy losses and an ongoing shortage of armored vehicles, have once again failed to take control of the village. Despite Russian strategic shifts, the battle has underscored Ukraine’s tactical skill and resilience, reflecting the overall stable and continued Ukrainian defense in the Donbas.
