Threats Of Strong, Long-Tracked Tornadoes, 80 To 100 MPH Wind Gusts, Large Hail

A multi-day outbreak of severe thunderstorms will begin today and last through the weekend in the Midwest, South and East. Strong, long-tracked tornadoes, widespread damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding are all threats this dangerous bout of severe weather could produce.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 4 out of 5 risk of severe weather for both Friday and Saturday. This threat level is uncommon, usually only on a severe weather forecast 11 to 12 days a year, and is generally used only when supercells are capable of strong tornadoes, or long-lived squall lines are expected to produce widespread damaging winds.

Take this threat seriously and know ahead of time where your safe shelter is and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially since the severe storms could threaten at night in some locations.

Here's a look at what to expect each day.

This is me...I am dead center in the middle of it...please pray for us.

I am really scared with this storm as they are predicting high winds of 70-80 mph winds and it being after 10pm....

During earthquakes, folks take cover under sturdy furniture as protection against falling objects, large and small.  A dining table comes to mind.

Keeping with the earthquake theme, pillows and/or blankets are very helpful shock absorbers when wrapped around vulnerable body parts.  Keep your (small) emergency bag with some water, battery operated lighting, needed meds and phone charger with you so you don't have to look for it if you need to vacate quickly.

PS:  Make sure your phone stays fully charged. 🙏 :crossed:

Wow, have watched. lot of weather in my day, but what I am seeing is pretty unusual.

There is a severe thunderstorm warning (not watch) transversing N/S through the entire state of Missouri (west side).  The line is generally moving East at about 60 mph.

Hope this isn't a preclude to a substantial Derecho situation

Well down here people get out the warning pretty good, lol, even the mailman mentioned it to us today to be on the lookout tomorrow. You make your plans on what to do, wife is going to a friend to look around a basement with her. The neighbor offered it for use in the storms. Brother has a good storm shelter.

We had straight line winds a couple of weeks ago that were close to that. Did a lot of damage. If they had been tornadic.... :terror:

80-100 mile and hour winds are equivalent to hurricane strength winds. 

Again -- inner closet or inner most room w/o windows -- plenty of cushions -- flashlights, cellphones and chargers or battery back-up  banks.  Some water and a bit of non perishable food.  Jackets and blankets to keep you warm.

That unbroken line of severe storms now stretches unbroken from West Central Iowa to NW Arkansas. That is close to 500 miles!!!!!

Mt. Vernon and  Springfield by abt. 8

Scary radar as the cloud tops are being blown off W to E 30-40 miles ahead of line in some places.  With that, any level of spin or cross current is likely going to spin off some tornadoes.  Actually surprised no tornado warnings have been issued yet.

Not out of the woods yet, but the SPC  seems to have shifted their concern more toward Iowa.  Still a line of severe storms are transversing mid Missouri.   But unless I am reading the radar wrong, I am seeing less red on the map than I did 30 minutes ago.  Still stay vigilant.
