Will Canada de-value its currency to maintain American export markets in spite of the tariffs?

Their currency is below water vs the Dollar.  I think a Canadian quarter is worth about the same as a US nickel.  And I'm damn tired of getting their fake ass coins back as change at the Kwik Mart.

Apparently tariffs on dairy/cheese products are very high. I don't know what else.
Canada only allows a very small amount of American dairy products to enter the country either duty free or at very small tariffs.  Above that amount, Canada slaps tariffs like 245% on cheese and 298% on butter.

American places almost zero tariffs on Canadian dairy

Anybody think that fair?

Seriously.  Does anyone GAF about Canada?  I mean seriously. Like maple syrup, Canada's evil oozes over the United States.
Come on now WTF, have you ever heard anyone ever say, "Honey, lets stay in and order Canadian food"? I'll tell ya another thing their beer sucks!  Canadians suffer from a serious inferiority complex. Maybe we don't have to watch as much hockey on tv this year.

NHL commissioner says league could be affected by U.S.-Canada tariffs
Mar 5 2025

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league might be affected by tariffs and relations between the U.S. and Canada because players in both countries are paid in U.S. dollars.
Bettman joined CNBC’s “Squawk Box” to discuss the league’s 2024-25 season, geopolitical effects and more.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on state of the league: The game has never been better
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday that the league could be affected by the current tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

Bettman said 25% of the league’s revenue comes from its Canadian clubs. Though he said the Canadian teams perform well, Bettman added that there could be ramifications for the league depending on the state of Canadian tariffs.

“All players, no matter which country they play in, get paid in U.S. dollars,” Bettman told CNBC’s Becky Quick on “Squawk Box.” “So if the impact of the tariffs is to see the Canadian dollar drop relative to the U.S. dollar, it will make it more difficult and more painful.”

Bettman said he has not yet engaged in any conversations with the Trump administration, but he believes the core of the tension between the two countries is a “policy issue,” with Canadians and Americans getting ”caught in the middle.”

“I’m hoping that this is a moment in time and both countries find a way to work through this,” Bettman said, adding that the uncertainty and tariffs may also cause difficulties with the NHL’s sponsors.

The league currently has seven Canadian teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks.

Despite the uncertainty, Bettman said the league is expecting to exceed revenue of $7 billion in mixed currency for the current 2024-25 season. The NHL has also seen record ratings and strong attendance, he noted, with teams playing at 96.7% capacity season to date.

According to CNBC’s 2024 Official NHL Team Valuations, the average NHL franchise value was $1.92 billion.

“Our ratings are strong and we have great media partners in Canada and the United States,” Bettman said. “And we’re in a good place because the game has never been better.”

Getting tariffs aligned so we are on an equal playing field isn't going to happen over night. Nor is bringing jobs back to the U.S.  As Trump stated last night give him time.

How much time will be needed is an unknown as well as how long his voting base and others are going to accept the inevitable hurdles that we as a nation are going to have to face.

Has anyone figured out Trump’s rationale for this trade war with Canada?  As in, a particular import duty or cross border policy.  The reasons he shared do not make sense, and he needs to spend political capital elsewhere.
Right now there is a 200% tariff on some American goods. It isa bout time our people were not hurt by the Canadians.

1980 (still lived just outside Buffalo NY) during our lunch break at college, we would drive over the border on Fridays fill the gas tank and swap a case of empties for a case of fulls, pay the $1 duty (If they asked us to) and head back for the afternoon class. D@MN I miss those days sometimes.

Oh, Canada, me thinks you are going to lose this battle.

You're not wrong, the US is by far an importing nation, Canada is an exporting one relative to us. Importing nations almost always hold the cards when it comes to tariffs.

That being said I'm worried consumers will also lose this battle. We'll see where prices go.

And then Canada will increase their tariff by the same amount ... and so on, and so on ... as both economies get destroyed

All because Trump has a petty personal grudge with Trudeau

Brilliant strategy there, Team Trump ... create a trade war when none existed before

Are you kidding?  Canada threw the first 2 or 3 vollies in this trade war.  Trudy's folly about killed our dairy industry.

Canada exports more than foodstuffs, also exports energy (which helps) and lumber (which also help). More competition is a win for consumers.

Good point, I was looking at a list of largest Canadian companies, and there isn't basically shit that they provide that think is important to me.  Power generation might be an issue up north, but i think we can make some transmission lines adjustments on the grid pretty quickly , and tell the Canucks to GF themselves.

And one last point....  Not even those in a trade war threaten embargoes, which is what that one Canuck is threatening with cutting off power to Michigan.

The Laffer curve comes into play here. US Tariffs on Canada have a proportionately higher impact than do Canadian tariffs on the US.

I suspect as things unfold that the US Government will indeed see higher revenues overall via tariff revenues and increased domestic production for US consumption. The Canadian government on the other hand may see higher tariff revenues but overall losses as their domestic trade sectors retreat as their exports to the US decline.

For someone who I thought was up there with me, in financial acumen, I find your comment here strange.  I'd like to live in the world of unicorns farting skittles over the rainbow too, but in the sand box of geo-finance, there has to be some level of fairness in the systems that we play in the box.  When you have one kiddy who continually kicks sand in the eyes of  another with unfair accrued penalities, at some point you have to start throwing sand  back.  It was up to me, I'd wipe the slate clean, and say that there are none for anyone.  But we all know that head kiddie Trudy, basically has had us help subsidize his economy the past 10 years, and I applaud DJT for trying to do something to rectify it.

I am still hoping and thinking this thing is averted, and we all can play nice.

What portion of imports actually exceed the quotas and are subject to these rates?  From what I have read it isn’t that common, although certain carveouts were negotiated (by the Trump admin) as part of the USMCA.  They act as anti-dumping measures.

Pointing sat dairy is dumb anyway. MANY US states protect their dairy industry (which includes eggs, and therefore chickens too), including right here where I live, until very recently. For a long time, most of my life, you could only buy local Lucerne or Darigold products here. We didn't even have Tillamook (which is our neighbor, Oregon) here until the Costco and the Walmart showed up. Now we have more... Kroger is here... Costco and Wallyworld.... and prices are rising. Go figger.

You ain't tellin me nothing. Remember, I am a Western man... A Northwestern man. I saw our livelihood utterly destroyed as our lumber industry was purposefully curtailed. All those western lumber contracts moved to Canada. So I get it, probably better than most.

But the problem ain't the Canadians. The problem is that they won't open the damn timber sales and support the mills DOWN HERE. That's why the Canadians can get away with lumber tariffs. But fixing that ain't a matter of retaliatory tariffs. The answer to that is rebuilding American Lumber. The Canadian tariff will go away the moment that cheap American lumber arrives.

"We welcome those [executive orders] and look forward to rebuilding the American timber industry," Dane, executive director for the American Loggers Council (ALC) said Tuesday on the Fox News Channel.

Yeah... He said it the first time around too. What he says and what actually sticks are two different things.  *****rollingeyes*****
