Will Canada de-value its currency to maintain American export markets in spite of the tariffs?

Their currency is below water vs the Dollar.  I think a Canadian quarter is worth about the same as a US nickel.  And I'm damn tired of getting their fake ass coins back as change at the Kwik Mart.

A Looney buck is worth around 70 cents against a Yankee buck.It seems to hover right there... between a quarter and thirty cents discount most of the time.

Apparently tariffs on dairy/cheese products are very high. I don't know what else.
Canada only allows a very small amount of American dairy products to enter the country either duty free or at very small tariffs.  Above that amount, Canada slaps tariffs like 245% on cheese and 298% on butter.

American places almost zero tariffs on Canadian dairy

Anybody think that fair?

Seriously.  Does anyone GAF about Canada?  I mean seriously. Like maple syrup, Canada's evil oozes over the United States.
Come on now WTF, have you ever heard anyone ever say, "Honey, lets stay in and order Canadian food"? I'll tell ya another thing their beer sucks!  Canadians suffer from a serious inferiority complex. That's why they built the Canadian National Tower! World's largest free-standing structure!  Not sure what they call that POS  building now.  Maybe Canuck whatisname can chime in and tell us about the metric system and the Celsius system or that ass hole Neil Young!

There are a few Canucks I’d like to return to sender, like Jim Carrey, but be honest there are quite a few talented ones that came here and aren’t A-holes, well okay Shatner is not one of them.

Maybe we don't have to watch as much hockey on tv this year.

NHL commissioner says league could be affected by U.S.-Canada tariffs
Mar 5 2025

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league might be affected by tariffs and relations between the U.S. and Canada because players in both countries are paid in U.S. dollars.
Bettman joined CNBC’s “Squawk Box” to discuss the league’s 2024-25 season, geopolitical effects and more.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on state of the league: The game has never been better
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday that the league could be affected by the current tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

Bettman said 25% of the league’s revenue comes from its Canadian clubs. Though he said the Canadian teams perform well, Bettman added that there could be ramifications for the league depending on the state of Canadian tariffs.

“All players, no matter which country they play in, get paid in U.S. dollars,” Bettman told CNBC’s Becky Quick on “Squawk Box.” “So if the impact of the tariffs is to see the Canadian dollar drop relative to the U.S. dollar, it will make it more difficult and more painful.”

Bettman said he has not yet engaged in any conversations with the Trump administration, but he believes the core of the tension between the two countries is a “policy issue,” with Canadians and Americans getting ”caught in the middle.”

“I’m hoping that this is a moment in time and both countries find a way to work through this,” Bettman said, adding that the uncertainty and tariffs may also cause difficulties with the NHL’s sponsors.

The league currently has seven Canadian teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks.

Despite the uncertainty, Bettman said the league is expecting to exceed revenue of $7 billion in mixed currency for the current 2024-25 season. The NHL has also seen record ratings and strong attendance, he noted, with teams playing at 96.7% capacity season to date.

According to CNBC’s 2024 Official NHL Team Valuations, the average NHL franchise value was $1.92 billion.

“Our ratings are strong and we have great media partners in Canada and the United States,” Bettman said. “And we’re in a good place because the game has never been better.”

Getting tariffs aligned so we are on an equal playing field isn't going to happen over night. Nor is bringing jobs back to the U.S.  As Trump stated last night give him time.

How much time will be needed is an unknown as well as how long his voting base and others are going to accept the inevitable hurdles that we as a nation are going to have to face.

Has anyone figured out Trump’s rationale for this trade war with Canada?  As in, a particular import duty or cross border policy.  The reasons he shared do not make sense, and he needs to spend political capital elsewhere.
Right now there is a 200% tariff on some American goods. It isa bout time our people were not hurt by the Canadians.

In college we were fond of Labatt's Blue. It wasn't that much more expensive than PBR, Hamms, and Schlitz which we drank back then.  This was before the watery crap like Natty Light and Keystone gen-x swilled.

Tariffs are a bit like nuclear weapons. Better to not play. But if forced to play, demonstrate the chain reaction that follows in no uncertain terms.

1980 (still lived just outside Buffalo NY) during our lunch break at college, we would drive over the border on Fridays fill the gas tank and swap a case of empties for a case of fulls, pay the $1 duty (If they asked us to) and head back for the afternoon class. D@MN I miss those days sometimes.
