The pansy speaks. Apparently, border control was just too much to ask: "There is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs today."

That's total BS ... Canada already did everything the US asked for on the border, yet it's still not good enough

This is all about Trump's petty personal grudge against Trudeau

It sucks to be Trudy.  It sucks worse to be a Canadian who voted for the pr*ck.

I'm neither, but Trump's sweeping tariffs are alienating everybody, even his (former) supporters here

Neither what?  Neither you are, or aren't a Canadian or didn't vote for Trudy?

I'm not Trudeau and I didn't vote for him, so my Life doesn't suck, according to you.

I even warned back in 2015 he'd be a disaster.

Trump has accomplished something unusual, he has managed to change the purchasing habits of Canadians.

It is now common to see consumers in the stores here check to see where a product is made - and if it comes from the States, they ain't buying, they'll find an alternative- and price doesn't matter anymore.

Many Canadians who used to vacation to the US regularly, say they won't go there anymore ... it will be real interesting to the see the US tourism and export numbers in a few months ...

"update from the front lines"

That's a two way street. What happens when Americans do the same?

Theoretically Trump's tariffs are no higher than Canada's tariffs. When Canada increases them, Trump will match them. That's a losing position for Canada. The winning positions is for tariffs to go to zero in both directions.

Has anyone figured out Trump’s rationale for this trade war with Canada?  As in, a particular import duty or cross border policy.  The reasons he shared do not make sense, and he needs to spend political capital elsewhere.

And then Canada will increase their tariff by the same amount ... and so on, and so on ... as both economies get destroyed

All because Trump has a petty personal grudge with Trudeau

Brilliant strategy there, Team Trump ... create a trade war when none existed before

No, both economies will not get destroyed. Our bump in the road will be Canada's crater.

Like I said upthread, the only winning play is for Canada to reduce tariffs. The reduction will be matched.

IIRC, the initial trigger was a lack of policy to stop infiltration of the US with illegals. Ditto with Mexico.

It is claimed that Trump is only matching Canadian tariffs on American products. If true, that's fair enough.

Right but what does he expect of Canada, in specific?  Their border is 5,525 miles long, and illegal migration is a slow trickle compared to just a few places in Texas.

JUST IN: Tariff Deal With Canada And Mexico Already Imminent, Lutnick Says

Published 19 minutes ago

on March 4, 2025

By Chris Powell

A trade deal between the United States, Canada, and Mexico may be finalized as early as Wednesday, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking on Fox News, Lutnick revealed that both Canadian and Mexican officials had been in discussions with the Trump administration throughout the day, seeking a resolution on tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

“Both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today trying to show that they’ll do better, and the President’s listening because you know he’s very, very fair and very reasonable,” Lutnick said on Fox Business.

“I think he’s going to work something out with them. It’s not going to be a pause, none of that pause stuff, but I think he’s going to figure out you do more and I’ll meet you in the middle some way.”

Lutnick indicated that while Trump is firm on holding America’s trading partners accountable, he is also willing to negotiate a fair outcome. “We’re going to probably be announcing that tomorrow,” Lutnick said, suggesting that a middle ground is being reached but without the administration backing down entirely.

The urgency behind the negotiations comes after President Trump escalated trade tensions on Tuesday, launching a new round of tariffs. The administration slapped 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports, while Canadian energy exports were given a slightly reduced 10% levy. Additionally, Trump doubled tariffs on Chinese imports from 10% to 20%.

But that can’t possibly be the case at 25%.  He negotiated a free trade agreement with them.  He also keeps referring to a nonexistent $200B trade deficit.

Apparently tariffs on dairy/cheese products are very high. I don't know what else.

Not the least bit surprised. Where are the markets?
