Tony Shaffer to Newsmax: Trump, Ukraine in 'Battle of Dueling Narratives'

Sandy Fitzgerald    |   Sunday, 02 March 2025 10:08 AM EST

The White House and Ukraine are involved in a "battle of dueling narratives" over Ukraine's minerals deal, considering that three days before President Donald Trump's inauguration, the British signed an agreement with Ukraine that includes rights to the resources, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer told Newsmax Sunday.

"This is on the British U.K. website,"  Shaffer, the president of Project Sentinel, told Newsmax's "Wake Up America Weekend." "Ukraine and the U.K. signed a 100-year deal over security guarantees and economic development."

Shaffer said he believes the strong words toward Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Friday in the Oval Office were the result of President Donald Trump and his team finding out "they were being played."

"We, the United States, are trying to be signed up to a deal that we provide security guarantees for an economic development deal that [British Prime Minister] Keir Starmer has already signed them up to do," said Shaffer. "So the first thing it has to do is people have to take a step back and be honest with what's really going on."

He added that he believes Trump was trying to play a "straight line deal" to sign an agreement on mineral rights, "knowing full well that the British had already signed on this three days before his inauguration."

This means that if the Europeans want the United States to continue helping them support Ukraine, "they're going to have to take a step back and start being honest with the United States about what's going on here."

The deal Ukraine signed with the U.K. commits the two sides to cooperate on defense, economic, and technology projects, including "supporting development of a Ukrainian critical minerals strategy and necessary regulatory structures required to support the maximization of benefits from Ukraine’s natural resources."

Meanwhile, Trump has been "very clear" on the Europeans' involvement in supporting Ukraine, said Shaffer.

"The other day when Keir Starmer was in the office, he asked the prime minister, Gee, can you guys beat the Russians on your own? This is all about them finally stepping up and taking responsibility for their own backyard," Shaffer said.

Shaffer also noted that Starmer has reportedly said that the agreements have been made between Ukraine and the U.K., but "'they're not really worth anything unless the United States shows up to make it all real.'"

"They're used to us showing up and paying everything," said Shaffer. "We're not going to do that now. It's not our job, not in our interest.

"President Trump wants peace. He's got a path to peace. But that requires the Europeans essentially take upon themselves responsibility. He said he has no problem with French peacekeepers in Ukraine. He has no problem with the British with their 3,000-man army at this point. If they want to do that, fine. But it's not our job to back them up."

So Starmer just days ago was acting friendly to POTUS and the press, knowing there would be no deal for mineral rights because the UK already had them?  Good grief…

I wonder if Z has been playing way over his head if this is true? Reading this article, a lot of 'mineral wealth' is unproven which, in the resources industry means it is worth $0

Ukraine doesn't have any rare earth metals, and the strategic minerals it does have are not worth trillions of dollars

There is currently a lot of confusion over US President Donald Trump’s proposed $500bn deal to gain control over Ukraine’s rare earth metals wealth. The problem is that Ukraine doesn’t have any rare earth minerals; it has a lot of “strategically important metals” like lithium. That is true. But actual rare earth metals? No. Almost none.

A deep dive by Bloomberg Opinion columnist Javier Blas, released on February 19, went into the distinction between the two and undermined Trump’s assumption that Ukraine holds trillion of dollars of valuable minerals.

“What Ukraine has is scorched earth; what it doesn’t have is rare earths. Surprisingly, many people – not least, US President Donald Trump – seem convinced the country has a rich mineral endowment. It’s a folly,” Blas wrote.

Senator Lindsey Graham’s estimate that Ukrainian has $2-$7 trillion-worth of metals and minerals seems like a vast overestimate, as collectively the strategic metals and minerals that Ukraine actually does have are worth, at the most, $775bn in total, according to bne IntelliNews estimates, – comprising mostly lithium, titanium and copper.

And that is all potential. Most of these riches are still in the ground. The current value of Ukraine’s strategic metal and mineral exports from existing production was not more than $100mn in 2024.

So I guess all Trump got was an invitation from the King for a State visit...assholes.

Trump needs to rat them all out...lay it all out there for the American people...

I saw a map showing the location of Ukraine's rare earth minerals, but some of the area, Russia has already confiscated, so is this a ploy to get NATO and the US to put boots on the ground to have Russia surrender what they've taken over???

One thing for sure - President Trump’s address to the joint session of Congress will be a “can’t miss”!

Good to know. That should help to secure things.

This might have been Trumps plan all along.  To show Trump up they had to pledge big buck to show they have big Bolz.

Lets see if the will really pony up with the Shillings, Marks and Francs

They always talk a big game, but they never deliver.
We have a beach head. Now it's time to win the war and save the Republic.

If the US is bailing on NATO, we'll obviously have to start our own nuclear programs program.

Same goes goes for Poland, the Baltic States, Finland, Sweden, Romania and Germany ... all facing a malicious enemy that does have nukes, so they have no choice but to acquire them too.

They beg us to bail then out since the revolution.  For some reason we seem to feel beholden to them.

No thanks. Britain and France are willing to help, without playing games.

Sweden already developed their own in 1956, but then scrapped them ... time to get those plans out of storage.

All the best to you in the GWN.  More the merrier.  A nuke in every pot. Every country or kingdom, no matter how poor, should be able to have a nuke.  Fair is fair.

If the US is withdrawing from the World, what choice do we have?

Ok ...and,  so???? @Canuck Conservative  Canada is one of the few NATO allies that fails to meet the 2 percent defense expenditure threshold.

So, please explain what it is the duty of the U.S. and others to pay Canada's share of that NATO budget??  Perhaps it's time for Canada to step up to the plate.

BTW, We are both facing the same malicious enemies.  There are 9 countries that have nuclear weapons; China, Russia, France, Pakistan, UK, Israel, India, US, and N. Korea.

You are missing the bigger picture. In short, Trump is simply trying to get things on an even playing field because the U.S. in one way or another is supporting many countries with U.S. American taxpayer dollars and getting very little in return.  It's destroying our country.  We can't keep printing money out of thin air.  If we continue down that path, we will soon be bankrupt.  If the U.S. falls, who do you think is going to swoop us up??  CHINA!  Then what? Canada is just a hop skip and a jump away from the  U.S.
