No 3 car brand in US suffers shock 70% drop in profits… because it takes hundreds of days to sell a single car


The maker of huge American brands Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram reported a staggering 70 percent drop in profits for 2024.

The corporate owner of the brands, Stellantis — the third biggest automaker in the US — said it cannot sell cars quick enough, with one model sitting on lots for over a year before selling on average.
 
Steep prices for several models are putting off buyers. The Jeep Wagoneer, for example, starts at $59,000 and top models reach upwards of $114,000.

Meanwhile, several cars, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler, are prone to breaking down frequently, landing below-average reliability ratings with Consumer Reports.

Americans don't want to buy expensive and unreliable cars - which has to a 25 percent drop in sales in the US, with Jeep badly hit. That is a bigger fall than the 11 percent in Europe.

That's a shame. Mr. M's 2018 Cherokee has been wonderful. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Not sure what he'll replace it with, down the road.

That's a shame. Mr. M's 2018 Cherokee has been wonderful. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Not sure what he'll replace it with, down the road.

Same with my 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk.  No problems other than it is a thirsty bugger.  Stellantis USA screwed the pooch when the disco'd the Cherokee model.

A YouTuber covered this a few weeks ago showing just some of the storage lots where the excess inventory of trucks and SUV’s are baking in the sun. One of the biggest problems is that it’s not just 2025 models  piling up, they still have loads of brand new 23’ and 24’s stockpiled. I understand that in order to sell them, they are putting enough miles on them so they can be sold as used even if it means taking a loss.

Go out and try to find a new Toyota on the car lot.  You have to order one as they do not exist.

That's the way to find out what are the best cars out there.

Chysler/Jeep are making poor quality vehicles.

But they don't want the cheapest new car on the market, either, otherwise Nissan wouldn't be on the brink of collapse.

At this point I have to assume that the working class is so rung out to dry that they're not buying new cars at all. Of course, Dave Ramsey and his "No new cars ever" preaching probably isn't helping that.

Well as long as you aren't talking about trucks, because Toyota has the same problem selling trucks as Dodge.

My BIL just paid 27K for a five year old Camry, one owner, under 40K miles really clean. But looking I see that 2025 run from low 30’s to 40+. I stopped trying to give him advice a long time ago, he likes to listen to people who just want to take his money. And out here in SoCal there are tons of Toyotas available on the dealer lots.

In places like California they screamed the ICE cars would be banned in less than 10 years.

Who wants to spend $50k on a new car wondering if it can even be used in 10 years potentially losing all of its value?

Are there going to be any gas stations to put fuel in it 10 years from now with the war on oil?

Also, if all these cars are going to be phased out, how are you going to get parts for them 10 years from now?

And what about mechanics? No point in going into a career that is a dead end.

The idiots in government and industry created this trainwreck, now let them suffer the consequences.

I read a recent Consumer Reports that rated the Chevy Colorado very low. We have a 2019 Colorado, purchased used, and it's performed perfectly. Couldn't be happier. It's a mystery how brands go downhill so quickly.

It makes me wonder how much of it may be internet sniping, and not actual owner reviews driving the downturn. Then again, about half the tech in some models is something I would not use and could do without. I can get a good tire pressure gauge, for instance, for about ten bucks, and using my MK1 eyeball, I know when to check them. Sound/handling changes herald a problem, and I don't generally drive over stuff that might hurt my tires.

Back up cameras? that's what mirrors are for. If there's any doubt, get out and check. I like my 'primitive' 20th century vehicles, though. They are easier to work on and have fewer things to go wrong.
