Musk's demand that fed employees list their accomplishments roils workforce: 'Mass civil disobedience'
'This is a good opportunity for mass civil disobedience,' Democratic Rep. Sean Casten posted to X
 By Emma Colton Fox News
Published February 23, 2025 1:20pm EST

Department of Government Efficiency chair Elon Musk announced that federal employees must report their accomplishments from the last week or face losing their jobs, which has roiled the federal workforce as some Democratic lawmakers and unions call on employees to flout the directive.

"This is a good opportunity for mass civil disobedience. Musk has no authority to do this. Encourage all federal employees to report to work, prepare GFY letters and continue to demonstrate the public service and patriotism he lacks," Illinois Democratic Rep. Sean Casten posted to X on Saturday evening.

The acronym GFY is internet slang typically meaning "go f--- yourself."

"It takes a remarkable combination of arrogance and stupidity to think that this is the best use of time for our intelligence officers, VA workers, air traffic controllers, and everyone else we depend on to do their job well," he continued.

Not the point. It's a great way to start identifying those that are truly productive.

A productive employee can put together a bullet point list in 2 minutes because they get a lot done in a week.

Elon did this when he bought X. Now the company is running better with only 20% of it's former employees.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
This man will end Trump.

This is harassment.  And if Trump/Musk get away with this, you can bet every corporation in the USA will be mirroring this behavior.

My wife tonight as she was getting in bed said, "this is exactly how they treat employees in Russia [her native country].

I will tell you, any time the USA begins to parallel anything they do in Russia, it is a moment for concern.  Russia is and has been under Putin a lawless country.  Let me repeat that so it can be absorbed.  A LAWLESS COUNTRY.

Those of you working in corporate America, do you really want to come to work daily being told you will be subject to termination, exactly like what Trump/Musk are doing?  DAILY THREATS! Best think hard on that one, because if it can be done in government, it can certainly be done in corporate America.

I told my wife, you got just a few more years to get your 20 and you can leave to make twice the income working for a pharma company.  This idiocy will actually motivate the highest quality people to depart, and Trump will be left with all the dummies that work for the federal government that do nothing.

Civil Disobedience?  I am hating government workers more by the day.

You want to know wbat I'd done if one of my employees had refused to prepare one of their monthly activity reports?

This is harassment.

For the last f'n time, everyone in the private sector is expected to provide periodic updates  (reports) of their activities to make sure team activities are aligned with objectives and business plans.   So just why do government employees think they are special and entitled?

Never mind....    we've known that for years.

Every day on a drilling rig, I send out a report at 5 AM documenting what was done in the last 24 hours, maximum and minimum parameters, geology, including an up to the minute strip log (for the whole well to that point), and anything else of note or concern. When steering the well, you can add another layer to that, including target depths for the next 1000 ft. and a cross section of the well as well as current correlation information. All of this is conducted onsite, regardless of the weather. (I have worked in conditions from 122 above to -60, in blizzards and stifling heat.)
Retirement? Personal Leave? Sick leave? If you want that, take it out of your day rate, and there is no guarantee you'll have a job tomorrow.
Arguably, what those of us who do what I do perform is a vital job that needs to be done for the safety and energy security of America. At any given time, there are only a few thousand of us in the field, worldwide. For the guys who work offshore, it can be even more challenging.

I'm having a really hard time finding my give-a-damn over folks who have climate controlled offices and scads of benefits who are having a hard time typing out a damned email. Take ten minutes and get it done. Less time to do it than bitch about it. Sheesh!

I think you have that backwards.  I have worked for a Fortune 50 company for 25 years now, and I have been required to provide a status report of what I have accomplished every single week of that tenure.

I am also subject to termination if I fail to perform my job duties ... as I should be, because I am not upholding my part of the employment contract if I fail to perform.  Not to mention that my company has had plenty of layoffs / down-sizing / "right" sizing / Reductions in Force over the years, terminating the employment of good people who were being productive. That is the way corporations stay viable and keep their balance sheets in the black.

Why should government jobs which are paid for with our tax dollars be any different?

I think the concept of a "job description" is foreign to jafo.  Some of those in the enforcement sections like IRS and EPA are famous for winging it.  After 50 years of pent up anger, many of us citizens are now cheering for retribution.

My only federal employment was a summer legal internship with the Dept of Interior some 40 yrs ago. I was all excited, thinking there would be so much to learn! Wow, this will prepare me for my future endeavors!

Wrong. We did absolutely nothing all day. Two or three hours drinking coffee and gabbing, then everyone went to his or her own office and sat some more, doing nothing. Maybe once or twice was I assigned a task - research, accompany the field solicitor to the courthouse - but mostly I stayed at my desk and entertained myself reading case law. It was eye-opening.

Right out of college, I did a one year stint at the State Level (Dept. of Health) .  When I trained with Chief, we spent half the day, doing his personal errands.  More than once he told me that since we made so little money, we were entitled to do that.

That taught me everything I needed ot know about the government.

The environmental staff at a large refinery (employees and contractors) is typically about 200.  When I first started, it was less than 10.  That's what happens when the bureaucracy runs amok.

Huh?

He is an unpaid advisor to the president, and has been given task to embark on one of the largest fact finding operations in human history. Give me one example where he is overstepped level of authority.  If you are alluding to the request for activities from bureaucrats, I think that is within the scope of said "fact finding". He has fired no one yet, and won't...   That's the job of each Cabinet, Agency, and Commissioner Secretary or Head.   Your anti-DOGE rhetoric is getting dangerously close to snowflake status.  Get with the program dude.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

And Elon isn't doing anything other than making recommendations that POTUS can choose to act on or not.

Civil Disobedience?  I am hating government workers more by the day.

You want to know wbat I'd done if one of my employees had refused to prepare one of their monthly activity reports?

Hit the road Jack! Don't come back no more, no more.

All of us who have been employed at one time or another had to account for what we were doing. All of us who employed people wanted to know what was done at some point or another. It's a part of work. Yet govt. workers think they are above all that.

Can't wait to see more of the drama queens fired.

Sheesh!

 :amen:

The way they complain you would think they are being pulled away from open heart surgery. Also, the idea they have that they have a right to "resist" is beyond belief. If a representative of the boss asks for a 5 bullet point email you do it. If you don't like it find another job.

Elon Musk's position has not been authorized by any act of Congress. He has no authority.

Wrong

Musk is working for the Chief Executive as an advisor. He doesn't need any authorization.

I wouldn't reply.  If they are going to lay you off, they are going to lay you off after you forensically document everything you do, train your replacement, and transfer knowledge to offshore consultants.

It's best to be one of the first ones out the door.  If they offer a package, because each subsequent package will be less generous or there will not be other packages.

Those left behind will be mega-stressed, and the lucky ones will be able to voluntarily pursue outside opportunities.

Tell me about it! I worked overseas for years to avoid that BS!
If that refinery was in California, it would be a staff of 2000.

Right out of college, I did a one year stint at the State Level (Dept. of Health) .  When I trained with Chief, we spent half the day, doing his personal errands.  More than once he told me that since we made so little money, we were entitled to do that.

That taught me everything I needed ot know about the government.
That is almost exactly what I had to do while a junior engineer in the Dept of Commerce.  I spent more time going to the GSA building collecting office supplies and making xerox copies than almost anything else.

No, not correct.  Musk has no power to act on his own.  All he can do is recommend - as an adviser who has not been confirmed by the Senate - and then the person he is advising - the President - must decide to take or not take the recommended actions.
