Elon Musk: ‘All Federal Employees’ to Receive Email Inquiring About ‘What They Got Done’

Elizabeth Weibel 22 Feb 2025
Elon Musk revealed that “all federal employees” would be receiving an email asking them to explain what they accomplished over the past week, adding that not responding would “be taken as” a sign of resignation.

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk wrote in a post on X. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

Musk’s post comes as President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the heads of federal agencies to prepare for “large-scale reductions in force.”

The executive order also states that, “the Director of the Office of Management and Budget shall submit a plan to reduce the size of the Federal Government’s workforce through efficiency improvements and attrition (Plan).”

Uh-huh.  Civil service unions don’t work that way.

Musk isn't asking jack from the unions.  He is asking it from employees whose salaries are paid by the taxpayer.

One more act that will dig a deeper hole.  Pure idiocy from my view.

Musk Email Demands All Federal Employees Justify Their Paychecks By Monday Night or Resign

Subject Line: “What did you do last week?”

Legal Insurrection  by Elizabeth Stauffer 2/23/2025

Earlier this month, a government worker at a Leesburg, Virginia, town hall revealed that members of the Department of Government Efficiency team were conducting 15-minute interviews with federal employees asking them to “justify their existence.” This would allow DOGE to determine if they were necessary to the agency or if they should be fired.

On Saturday afternoon, Elon Musk took things up a notch. In an ominous post on X, he wrote, “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week.

Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.

    — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2025

Musk’s post followed President Donald Trump’s morning message on Truth Social: “ELON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET MORE AGGRESSIVE. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAGA!”

As promised, on Saturday evening, all federal workers received an email from the Office of Personnel Management asking them to list five tasks they had accomplished last week. The email requested that employees “cc” their responses to their managers and set a compliance deadline for Monday at 11:59 p.m. EST.

In the subject line of the email, federal employees were asked, “What did you do last week?” Next, they were instructed to “reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.”

Civil servants across the government are getting hit with an email this evening asking them to justify their jobs

Subject: What did you do last week?

“Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.”

Bullshit...

Most everyone in the private sector with professional jobs has to prepare an activity report usually weekly, and at the least monthly.

Your continued defense of Fedzilla is puzzling

Agreed.

"What are we paying you for?" and "What did you get done this week?" are perfectly legitimate questions. Why should government employees be immune to that?

In the real world, results count, good results count more. I have had to face such questions daily on some jobs (where you'd better have an answer). Reasons for non-performance are one thing, excuses are another entirely.

Apparently, my cousin's daughter works at one of those totally unnecessary agencies relating to the IRS, and she's pitching a fit on Facebook. Why am I reminded of phony baloney jobs?

Sweep the floors in the jewelry store, then check through the dirt and see if any gems got caught up it. There will be a few people who were still on probie status who were doing very well, were efficient, and deserve jobs, possibly more than more entrenched personnel. Act accordingly, and there will be better people in more productive positions for less (because they hadn't climbed the GS ladder yet). A relative who was 10 months into the job and curating artifacts from three parks in the southeast got caught up in the summary releases. Bummer, because they'd taken the job, leaving the staff at Mt. Vernon, for something with more permanence. If the position of cataloguing and preserving the material which has been excavated (a significant investment) isn't important enough to keep, then eliminate the position, but if it is, hire that person back.

Pretty much sums it up from my perspective.  My liberal friends, the 2 who still speek to me are playing the "What if" game.  But my "What if's" ran out of GAF's.

To be clear, the bar is very low here.

An email with some bullet points that make any sense at all is acceptable!

Should take less than 5 mins to write.

How EVIL!  Musk is bringing back SLAVERY !

I'm fully supportive of the reduction of a bloated federal workforce, but what's the difference between the optics of this mandate than those of the Mask or Covid shot mandate?   Not much.

Seriously?  Your equating a govrrnment employee following a government request to send an email while on government time (for which they get paid) with a private sector employee losing his/her private sector job because they refused to be injected with an experimental RNA generator?

Big difference in getting fired for not following a bogus health standard, versus not being needed in the first place.

Layoffs happen all the time in the private sector.  There's a reason it is long over due with government.
