Part of my commentary built into the title is to criticize the crass mass media as they keep reporting on the story.

Something I learned in the past few years is the media did something even worse when Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was dying.

I'm sorry for not making this clear...I thought other people would get it. My mistake.

@MeganC  Built in commentary???  Ok. Of course the media is going to continue to report on his health. Maybe, I missed it but I don't see the stories as being crass.  IMHO, At any rate,  he is The Pope; like him or not, he is struggling to survive; I opt to pray for him.  Interesting that today's Gospel and the Pope's message in essence is love triumphs over evil.

To each his own.  Peace.

BTW - today's Gospel addresses this very issue.....

@Hoodat Just STOP that CRAP. He is the Vicar of Christ. God put him there for a reason. You don't care for him that is your choice. Either act like a Christian or take this crap to TOS.

John Paul II and Benedict were good men and good Catholics who even inspired Protestants like myself.

Bergoglio was not in their class.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
I'm with Megan.  Screw that guy.  He's got a lot to answer for when he finally meets St. Peter soon.  I predict that happens on Wednesday.
That, my friend, is ultimately between him and The Almighty.

I have been skeptical in the past of his Holiness, but wish ill upon no one.
My own father is teetering on the brink of stage 5 kidney disease, and I'd wish it on no one. I met Jesus when I had pneumonia (the only time I have ever stayed overnight in hospital), and He told me to go back, it was not yet my time. I recovered, literally, overnight, coughing up an incredible volume of really nasty mucous. I would not wish the feeling of drowning in your own snot on anyone either.

The Pope is in God's Hands, hands I trust daily with the well being of me and all I know and love. He will be the Judge, not I.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Once the kidneys start failing for someone with acute heart or lung problems, time to call a priest for Last Rites.

I read somewhere where the Pope chose a "DNR" option.  Which might mean he might not  opt towards dialysis, or other options to prolong life.

To me, it sounds like the Pope is heading toward congestive heart failure ... fluid in the lungs ... kidneys unable to efficiently remove fluids from the blood stream.

Reminds me of losing mother a few years ago. I have avoided this thread out of respect for my Catholic friends, but it is not hard to "judge rightly" (via fruits) on what I think of this Pope. That said, I also don't wish harm on him, and I pray for those are suffering due to him fading away. I pray the church returns to it's former self, in not promoting homosexuality (like the promoting the DC cardinal) and breaking laws by supporting illegal immigration. I fully understand even my own Southern Baptist are fighting these fights and the in-bounds these more liberal groups are promoting. It is a constant battle for the heart of a church, perhaps one of the last battles the devil wants to win. So I pray as Paul did for the heart of all church denominations to return fully to Jesus. I pray for my own heart to fight the desires of the worldly.

We all know the battle is real... and I believe in the power of prayer.

If I ever visit the Vatican, I hope to p!$$ on Cardinal Bernard Francis Law's grave ... as a thank you for shifting known, repeat-offender, pedophile priests among multiple parishes so they could abuse more children.

I wish no ill on the current Pope ... just stating my observation that kidney failure can be a sign that his body will fail him soon.

Pretending to have Christian charity in my heart would make me a hypocrite.  Jesus didn't have nice things to say about hypocrites.

If Cardinal Law had not fled to the Vatican (non-extradition treaty with US), there's a good chance that Massachusetts Attorney General, Thomas Reilly, would have pursued criminal charges for child endangerment.

A shepherd is supposed to protect his flock, especially the lambs.  Cardinal Law fed his lambs to the wolves to protect the 'good name' of a morally bankrupt institution - the Boston Archdiocese - and then proceeded to cover it up.

I'll show Cardinal Law as much Christian charity ... as he showed the children abused by clergy ... and a nun showed me when she bashed a classmate's head into the chalkboard because she couldn't figure out the long division equation.  The adults knew better, but maintained a conspiracy of silence to protect themselves, and did not protect the children entrusted to their care.

I save my Christian charity for acts of kindness to strangers in need.

Pope has maybe 72 hours left.  Better get his affairs together.  Fire upthe fire place.

No, I've never been a fan of this Pope, but judgement is truly not up to us.  I pray for this Pope as certainly his final days are before him. Ironically, yesterday's message in Gospel; Luke 6:27-38 is hard to deny. I found it applicable to the current situation with the Pope and yes, admittedly, it is a very difficult one to swallow.

IMHO There is a lot wrong within the Catholic church these days and a lot wrong with society in general, but again we are not to judge.

At the end of the day Francis is the leader of the Catholic church; though I don't agree with his rulings as he leans very much liberal and socialist.

Priests, nuns, teachers, boy scout troop leaders, girl scout leaders, etc., who take advantage of children and commit heinous actions against them is extremely difficult to ignore and praying for them is a pretty steep struggle.

I guess in praying I keep in thought that Love conquers evil.

I haven't studied St. Malachy but I do know that he predicted that there would be 111 popes; I believe Francis is the 111th pope making him the last pope by that prediction.  I find that unsettling.

I do too. I have a book somewhere about him,. I heard the author years ago on Art Bell and bought his book.

This is a very sore subject for me.  Fact is, we do not protect our children nor have laws in place to deal with perps that abuse children.

Why do I say this?  We have a statute of limitations for bringing criminal charges against folks sexually abusing children.  I actually had a case(while a school board member) where it was 14 years after the fact that a child brought an accusation against a teacher for being sodomized for an entire school year.  Apparently, this teacher picked one boy out each year and made him his boy toy for the school year.

Imagine a solicitor telling you that we cannot alert the parents of his current class, or past classes, in case some unusual behavior was happening with their son.  Could not say a word, or we could have been sued because of the statute of limitations!

As a parent of three at the time, and a son in the other class at the grade level this predator taught at in the same elementary school, I was nothing short of wanting to rip the head off this predator.  I ended up telling the solicitor to tell this maggot to leave or we fire him, not caring a sh*t about the statutory limit.  This maggot wanted $500,000 to leave.

He finally left when we told him, leave or face termination, and we will take our chances in the courtroom.

This is why I am serious as a heart attack, for all sexual encounters on children less than 12 years of age, I believe if found guilty, it should come with a capital punishment sentence, to be carried out in a public city square for all to see.  And anyone in the hierarchy covering up such a heinous act should face the same charge.

When I went to see the shocking movie Spotlight, about the sexual abuse of children in the Boston Diocese, I was shocked at the numbers mentioned at the end of the movie.  Virtually every city in the USA has had children violated by priests.  1 out of 6 priests is a sexual predator in the USA.   And it is a global problem too.  Any way, in the row behind me at the theater sat a couple, and the man had a very teary face.  He told me he was abused by a priest when he was a child.  It was a very heart breaking conversation.

I grew up in the Catholic church, and I was fortunate in that I was never faced with such a challenge.  We were taught that the priest is literally to be revered totally, a man of God standing in Christ's shoes.  No child should have such an experience.
