NYC Archbishop Timothy Dolan worries about health of Pope Francis, says ‘it’s not looking good’
He explained, 'Look, we gotta be kind of realistic'
By Jeffrey Clark Fox News
Published February 22, 2025 2:44pm EST

Archbishop of New York City Cardinal Timothy Dolan appeared on "Fox & Friends Weekend" to discuss a variety of topics, including the health of Pope Francis. Dolan candidly conceded, "It's not looking good."

He explained, "Look, we gotta be kind of realistic. When you get double pneumonia in anybody, you’re worried. I mean, if a child gets double pneumonia -- When you got double pneumonia in an 88 year-old-man, who has only got 75 percent of his lung capacity and is struggling with arthritis and a bunch of stuff, it’s not looking good."

Dolan added about the Pope: "I admire his grit. I admire his resilience. I’m praying with him. But I’m praying for him. But I think we have to be realistic as he certainly is."

...............Vatican News reported that medical professionals say the pope is not "in danger of death," but is not completely "out of danger" and will need to be hospitalized for "at least" all of next week. Physicians are worried about the threat of sepsis, a dangerous infection that can be fatal. ...............

The pope has had issues with his lungs from a very early age.

...."He is especially prone to lung infections due to developing pleurisy - an inflammation around the lungs - as an adult and having part of one of his lungs removed at age 21....."

Pope Francis sends message to 1,200,000,000 Catholics from hospital bed

Metro
by Gergana Krasteva
February 23, 2025

Pope Francis has sent a message to 1.2 billion Catholics across the world after the Vatican confirmed he was in a critical condition.

The 88-year-old is being treated for pneumonia in both lungs and chronic bronchitis at the Catholic Gemelli Hospital in Rome where he was admitted almost 10 days ago.

He required ‘high flows’ of oxygen to help him breathe and received blood transfusions after tests showed low counts of platelets, which are needed for clotting.

‘I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy,’ the pontiff said in his message from his hospital bed, released by the Vatican today.

‘I sincerely thank the doctors and health workers of this hospital for the attention they are showing me and the dedication with which they carry out their service among the sick,.’

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni’s issued a one-line statement earlier this morning about the last 12 hours but did not mention if Francis was up or eating breakfast.

In as much as I take issue with the practices and messages of Pope Francis, I found this to be a somewhat uplifting message and parts of his message gave me something to think about. I indeed said a prayer for him.

The Vatican released a copy of the text "prepared by the Holy Father."

"Brothers and sisters, happy Sunday!" the pope's homily began. "This morning, in Saint Peter’s Basilica, the celebration of the Eucharist with the Ordination of some candidates to the diaconate was celebrated. I greet them and the participants in the Jubilee of Deacons, which has taken place in the Vatican in these days; and I thank the Dicasteries for the Clergy and for Evangelization for the preparation of this event."

Pope Francis urged the deacons "to continue your apostolate with joy and – as today’s Gospel suggests – to be a sign of a love that embraces everyone, that transforms evil into goodness and engenders a fraternal world."

"Do not be afraid to risk love!" the homily continued. "On my part, I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy! I sincerely thank the doctors and health workers of this hospital for the attention they are showing me and the dedication with which they carry out their service among the sick."

In the pre-prepared statement, Pope Francis added that Monday "will be the third anniversary of the large-scale war against Ukraine: a painful and shameful occasion for the whole of humanity!"

"As I reiterate my closeness to the suffering Ukrainian people, I invite you to remember the victims of all armed conflicts, and to pray for the gift of peace in Palestine, Israel and throughout the Middle East, Myanmar, Kivu and Sudan," the message said.............

Pope Francis Has ‘Mild’ Kidney Failure And Remains In Critical Condition, Vatican Says In Latest Update

Pope Francis is still in critical condition but has not had any “further respiratory cris[e]s,” the Vatican said Sunday, after the 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church was reported Saturday to be in critical condition following his week-long hospitalization for a lung infection.

..............

Francis is still on supplemental oxygen and tests showed “initial, mild” kidney failure, the Vatican said, according to the AP, but doctors said the situation is under control and the pope is alert and “well-oriented.”

The pope’s “prognosis remains reserved,” the Vatican said, as quoted by the AP, not making predictions on Francis’ potential recovery given “the complexity of the clinical picture, and the necessary wait for drug therapies to provide some feedback............

He's running out of time to make Jesus Christ Lord of his life.

I'm thinking he's on high doses of IV antibiotics for the pneumonia and I'm guessing that the beginning kidney failure may be a result of a secondary infection; likely sepsis will set in soon if no improvement is obtained with the initial infection.

Pope Francis’ tests show early kidney failure as 88-year-old remains in critical condition
By Associated Press
Published Feb. 23, 2025, 2:24 p.m. ET

Pope Francis remained in critical condition Sunday and blood tests show early kidney failure but he remains alert and “well-oriented,” and attended Mass, the Vatican said, as the 88-year-old pontiff battles pneumonia and a complex lung infection.

In a late update, the Vatican said Francis hadn’t had any more respiratory crises since Saturday night but was still receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen.

Some blood tests showed “initial, mild, kidney failure,” but doctors said it was under control. The decreased platelet count, necessary for clotting, that was first detected Saturday was stable.

“The complexity of the clinical picture, and the necessary wait for drug therapies to provide some feedback, dictate that the prognosis remains reserved,” the doctors concluded.

Prayers for him poured in from around the world, from his native Argentina to the seat of Sunni Islam in Cairo to schoolchildren in Rome.

In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan admitted what church leaders in Rome weren’t saying publicly: that the Catholic faithful were united “at the bedside of a dying father.”

Part of my commentary built into the title is to criticize the crass mass media as they keep reporting on the story.

Something I learned in the past few years is the media did something even worse when Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was dying.

I'm sorry for not making this clear...I thought other people would get it. My mistake.

@MeganC  Built in commentary???  Ok. Of course the media is going to continue to report on his health. Maybe, I missed it but I don't see the stories as being crass.  IMHO, At any rate,  he is The Pope; like him or not, he is struggling to survive; I opt to pray for him.  Interesting that today's Gospel and the Pope's message in essence is love triumphs over evil.

To each his own.  Peace.

BTW - today's Gospel addresses this very issue.....

I read somewhere where the Pope chose a "DNR" option.  Which might mean he might not  opt towards dialysis, or other options to prolong life.

To me, it sounds like the Pope is heading toward congestive heart failure ... fluid in the lungs ... kidneys unable to efficiently remove fluids from the blood stream.

Reminds me of losing mother a few years ago. I have avoided this thread out of respect for my Catholic friends, but it is not hard to "judge rightly" (via fruits) on what I think of this Pope. That said, I also don't wish harm on him, and I pray for those are suffering due to him fading away. I pray the church returns to it's former self, in not promoting homosexuality (like the promoting the DC cardinal) and breaking laws by supporting illegal immigration. I fully understand even my own Southern Baptist are fighting these fights and the in-bounds these more liberal groups are promoting. It is a constant battle for the heart of a church, perhaps one of the last battles the devil wants to win. So I pray as Paul did for the heart of all church denominations to return fully to Jesus. I pray for my own heart to fight the desires of the worldly.

We all know the battle is real... and I believe in the power of prayer.

I wish no ill on the current Pope ... just stating my observation that kidney failure can be a sign that his body will fail him soon.

Pretending to have Christian charity in my heart would make me a hypocrite.  Jesus didn't have nice things to say about hypocrites.

If Cardinal Law had not fled to the Vatican (non-extradition treaty with US), there's a good chance that Massachusetts Attorney General, Thomas Reilly, would have pursued criminal charges for child endangerment.

A shepherd is supposed to protect his flock, especially the lambs.  Cardinal Law fed his lambs to the wolves to protect the 'good name' of a morally bankrupt institution - the Boston Archdiocese - and then proceeded to cover it up.

I'll show Cardinal Law as much Christian charity ... as he showed the children abused by clergy ... and a nun showed me when she bashed a classmate's head into the chalkboard because she couldn't figure out the long division equation.  The adults knew better, but maintained a conspiracy of silence to protect themselves, and did not protect the children entrusted to their care.

I save my Christian charity for acts of kindness to strangers in need.

Pope has maybe 72 hours left.  Better get his affairs together.  Fire upthe fire place.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

Still praying for her, and for you @GtHawk

No, I've never been a fan of this Pope, but judgement is truly not up to us.  I pray for this Pope as certainly his final days are before him. Ironically, yesterday's message in Gospel; Luke 6:27-38 is hard to deny. I found it applicable to the current situation with the Pope and yes, admittedly, it is a very difficult one to swallow.

IMHO There is a lot wrong within the Catholic church these days and a lot wrong with society in general, but again we are not to judge.

At the end of the day Francis is the leader of the Catholic church; though I don't agree with his rulings as he leans very much liberal and socialist.

Priests, nuns, teachers, boy scout troop leaders, girl scout leaders, etc., who take advantage of children and commit heinous actions against them is extremely difficult to ignore and praying for them is a pretty steep struggle.

I guess in praying I keep in thought that Love conquers evil.

I haven't studied St. Malachy but I do know that he predicted that there would be 111 popes; I believe Francis is the 111th pope making him the last pope by that prediction.  I find that unsettling.

I do too. I have a book somewhere about him,. I heard the author years ago on Art Bell and bought his book.

The adults knew better, but maintained a conspiracy of silence to protect themselves, and did not protect the children entrusted to their care.

This is a very sore subject for me.  Fact is, we do not protect our children nor have laws in place to deal with perps that abuse children.

Why do I say this?  We have a statute of limitations for bringing criminal charges against folks sexually abusing children.  I actually had a case(while a school board member) where it was 14 years after the fact that a child brought an accusation against a teacher for being sodomized for an entire school year.  Apparently, this teacher picked one boy out each year and made him his boy toy for the school year.

Imagine a solicitor telling you that we cannot alert the parents of his current class, or past classes, in case some unusual behavior was happening with their son.  Could not say a word, or we could have been sued because of the statute of limitations!

As a parent of three at the time, and a son in the other class at the grade level this predator taught at in the same elementary school, I was nothing short of wanting to rip the head off this predator.  I ended up telling the solicitor to tell this maggot to leave or we fire him, not caring a sh*t about the statutory limit.  This maggot wanted $500,000 to leave.

He finally left when we told him, leave or face termination, and we will take our chances in the courtroom.

This is why I am serious as a heart attack, for all sexual encounters on children less than 12 years of age, I believe if found guilty, it should come with a capital punishment sentence, to be carried out in a public city square for all to see.  And anyone in the hierarchy covering up such a heinous act should face the same charge.

When I went to see the shocking movie Spotlight, about the sexual abuse of children in the Boston Diocese, I was shocked at the numbers mentioned at the end of the movie.  Virtually every city in the USA has had children violated by priests.  1 out of 6 priests is a sexual predator in the USA.   And it is a global problem too.  Any way, in the row behind me at the theater sat a couple, and the man had a very teary face.  He told me he was abused by a priest when he was a child.  It was a very heart breaking conversation.

I grew up in the Catholic church, and I was fortunate in that I was never faced with such a challenge.  We were taught that the priest is literally to be revered totally, a man of God standing in Christ's shoes.  No child should have such an experience.
