With the pope being so isolated from people in the area where he resides, how did he get so sick??
He is far from isolated. He is constantly in contact with various assistants, and is also quite the workaholic. His aids are regularly telling him to slow down and take it easy, but he refuses to listen. For the record I do not agree with everything he says, but I can't criticize his work ethic.
In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

Prayers Pour In For Pope Francis After Turn For The Worse: ‘May Not Survive’

Trending Politics News
By Mark Steffen
February 19, 2025

The health of Pope Francis has taken a turn for the worse, leading Catholics around the world to offer up prayers as some fear he may not survive his bout with an aggressive form of the flu.

An update on the church leader’s health is grim as he tells confidants he is not sure he’ll overcome his illness. The 88-year-old pontiff was elected to his role in 2013, making him the longest-serving pope since the 26-year reign of John Paul II ended in 2005.

Two sources close to Pope Francis describe his illness as a “polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract” at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Amidst his declining condition, Francis “is rushing to tie up loose ends ahead of the battle to succeed him,” they told Politico.

Despite suffering from intense pain in recent days, Pope Francis at first refused to leave his residency and check himself in for a medical evaluation. However, he relented after advisors told him “in no uncertain terms that he was at risk of dying if he stayed in his room in the Vatican.”

An update from the Vatican on Tuesday revealed that Pope Francis now suffers from bilateral pneumonia, a condition that can be easily treated with antibiotics if addressed early. It’s unknown how many days Francis suffered through without treatment before entering the hospital.

The Vatican stated that he is being treated for asthmatic bronchitis, requiring cortisone and antibiotic treatment.

“Laboratory tests, a chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,” said a statement.

Who are the front-runners to be elected next pontiff after Pope Francis?

As Pope Francis, the oldest pope in over a century, continues to decline in health, speculation is percolating as to who will next be elected as the most powerful Catholic in the world.

The 88-year-old pontiff developed pneumonia in both lungs over the weekend and will remain hospitalized as he battles the infection, according to the Vatican.

Technically any Roman Catholic man can be elected as the heir to St. Peter, though invariably one of the 253 cardinals from around the world will don the papal tiara.

No, not any Roman Catholic man can be heir. Unless things have changed, the Catholic church has a distinction and qualification that each bishop/pope possesses a traceable lineage to the apostles; better known as apostolic succession.  So, it's just not an 'open' selection.

'Pope warns 'I may not survive' pneumonia': Pontiff, 88, 'rushes to tie up loose ends ahead of battle to succeed him'

Tie up loose ends?  Is that like making sure all the boxes are checked for getting into heaven?

AI Overview

Apostolic Succession

Apostolic succession is the belief that the Christian ministry is passed down from the apostles through a continuous line of bishops. It's a teaching in some Christian denominations, including Catholicism and Episcopalianism.

How does apostolic succession work?

The apostles chose other Christians to succeed them.
These successors then chose others to succeed them, and so on, down to the present day.
Bishops ordain and certify their successors, a process known as the Historic Episcopate.

What does apostolic succession mean?

It's a way of understanding that the Christian Church's ministry and authority come from the apostles.
It's also a way of understanding that the Church's doctrinal teachings have remained continuous from the time of the apostles to the present.

Why is apostolic succession important?

It's a way of understanding that bishops have special powers that were handed down to them by the apostles.

It's a way of understanding that all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the apostles.

Pope funeral 'is being rehearsed': Swiss Guard 'prepare for pontiff's death after the 88-year-old warned 'I may not survive' pneumonia

The Pope's funeral is allegedly being rehearsed after the 88-year-old warned he may not survive pneumonia.

The Swiss Guard protecting the Pope, 88, is rehearsing his funeral, with members under a curfew as they are 'preparing for the pontiff's death', Swiss newspaper Blick claims.

The Pope previously revealed he had 'already prepared' his tomb, but the location of his grave and the coffin itself would break with tradition.

This comes after Pope Francis was rushed to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday with significant chest pain, having resisted calls to leave the Vatican for days.

Doctors diagnosed him with a 'complex' respiratory infection and barred him from taking part in several engagements, with the Vatican cancelling or rescheduling his papal audiences this week.

The Vatican on Tuesday confirmed the pneumonia and said Francis' respiratory infection also involves asthmatic bronchitis, which requires the use of cortisone antibiotic treatment.

'Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father's clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,' the Vatican said. The infection is of particular concern because the Pope had part of his lung removed many years ago.

Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, told broadcaster Rai about the Pope's condition: 'Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.'

Pope Francis in critical condition, Vatican says
Pope Francis has been hospitalized for over a week
 By Rachel Wolf Fox News
Published February 22, 2025 1:39pm EST

Pope Francis was in critical condition after suffering an asthmatic respiratory crisis, The Associated Press reported, citing the Vatican.

"The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved," the Vatican said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized for over a week due to a respiratory infection. Doctors later diagnosed Pope Francis with pneumonia.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Pope Francis is in a 'critical condition' and has received blood transfusions after suffering asthmatic respiratory crisis, Vatican says

Daily Mail
By KATHERINE LAWTON
22 February 2025

Earlier, doctors said Francis was battling pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection that doctors explained remains touch-and-go and will keep him hospitalised for at least another week.

The Vatican carried on with its Holy Year celebrations without the pope today.

In a brief update this afternoon, Francis is said to have slept well overnight.

But doctors warned the main threat facing Francis is the onset of sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia.

As of Friday, there was no evidence of any sepsis, and Francis was responding to the various drugs he is taking, the pope's medical team said in their first in-depth update on his condition.

NYC Archbishop Timothy Dolan worries about health of Pope Francis, says ‘it’s not looking good’
He explained, 'Look, we gotta be kind of realistic'

Cardinal Timothy Dolan on somber moment of closing Catholic schools: ‘I tear up’
Archbishop of New York City Cardinal Timothy Dolan appeared on "Fox & Friends Weekend" to discuss a variety of topics, including the health of Pope Francis. Dolan candidly conceded, "It's not looking good."

He explained, "Look, we gotta be kind of realistic. When you get double pneumonia in anybody, you’re worried. I mean, if a child gets double pneumonia -- When you got double pneumonia in an 88 year-old-man, who has only got 75 percent of his lung capacity and is struggling with arthritis and a bunch of stuff, it’s not looking good."

Dolan added about the Pope: "I admire his grit. I admire his resilience. I’m praying with him. But I’m praying for him. But I think we have to be realistic as he certainly is."

Pope Francis in Critical Condition After ‘Respiratory Crisis,’ Vatican Says

Pope Francis was in critical condition on Saturday night after having a long “asthmatic respiratory crisis” that required “high flows of oxygen” as well as a blood transfusion, the Vatican said, adding to concerns about the health of the 88-year-old pontiff.

The announcement indicated that Francis’ medical condition had become more complicated since an update from his doctors on Friday evening, when he was also said to be in critical condition. “The pope is not out of danger,” the Vatican said on Saturday evening................

............The blood transfusion was necessary because tests showed low platelet counts associated with anemia, the Vatican said.
