Well heck, @roamer_1.  Sounds like quite a ride. A suggestion… don’t do that!  Sure hope you can mend up.

Heh. Thanks. I'll take your suggestion under advisement.

@roamer_1 I might be mistaken, but I believe that Medicare will pay in part for a lift chair and a hospital type of bed if your doctor orders it and states that it is medically necessary.

That's correct..I checked this morning..all you need is a prescription from your Dr...it may not pay for all of it though.

I am aware of all that... Though I already have a lift chair and all I need... Mostly paid for by myself or the family.  I am angling for some help getting a Rascal - Thinking about it anyway - Though I would rather a side by side or something so I have somewhere to throw my buggy. I dunno how that would work on a rascal

What about Life Alert?

$49.95 to $89.95 per month
Life Alert's rates are expensive, ranging from $49.95 to $89.95 per month. This is about $30 to $40 more per month than the industry average. However, Life Alert offers impressive monitoring services and reliable equipment.Jan 2, 2025
we have Philps Lifeline and it’s about $30 a month, after $99 setup. Before we had to get my mom 24/7 care givers it definitely saved her from being stuck on the floor for hours or worse. And even with the caregivers I have kept Lifline active.

Thank you. I will go to that expense if I must. I think I am going to try the AI thing first. So long as I can speak, I think I can get it to do anything I can get out of a Med Alert system, and more. And it costs me nothing except the cost of the devices.

Thanks for that. It turned out alright. But the point is that all the junk I thought was keeping me 'safe' didn't work at all.

My fault. I'm a systems guy, and my system failed. That means 'do something different'.

Only one point. You may not get many, if any, do overs to fine tune things. You need to go with something that will work, period.

Darn, @roamer_1 , that's scary and made me hurt. And I'm not even a guy. I'm glad you have kept your sense of humor.

Thanks for the thread. I want some kind of "Help me! I've fallen and can't get up" device but just can't spring for Life Lock...yet. Since I don't have a smart phone I'm not sure Giggles would work for me. The info here was interesting.

Stay safe!!!

I get that. I do. But what that is is Assisted Living. That's a 2-room apartment and a nurse.

Yes, that's an extrapolation beyond your intent. I mean to show that there is a continuum here, and I am somewhere on that line - maybe a little further away from that end than you believe... Maybe a little closer to that end than I believe.

Your engineer's mind sees cathedral. My systems mind sees bazaar.

I am a critical path thinker. I like options. It's basically the same cellular platform, so our argument can't be about that. It's the bells and whistles where we've got a grind.

I like that the AI can be in every room. I like that the AI can be summoned even if I'm buck nekkid in the shower. or if I fall over out in the yard. I like all the other things it can do besides an emergency call. I know, I know... That's the whole point, and all the rest is shiny shit... That's true. But that shiny shit is there.

And while I am committed to one platform, I am not committed to one device. It's such a distributed platform that it may well function without cellular - It may be able to function by either cellular or network, with several, if not many devices - I might even get it to work over a landline. That's maybe three ways it might work... and with more than one device, hard failure has far less risk.

So I get your argument, even if I did predict it.

I think the AI thing is worth a look. It is a good first step because it is distributed and works nearly anywhere - Granted, not as well as at home, but a single platform that reaches anywhere I am in town. And at home, eventually, it will be ambient and everywhere inside the house. That's a very flexible and distributed system.

That's what's needed first in my mind. Coverage. And if I need to go to a red button or something, I can always do that later.

That's my thinking.

Dear @berdie

You're kinda in the same place as me - Except I think you are a ways out from town compared to me. But you live alone too.

It might be worth going to a smart phone, if you've got the cellular out there. Giggles takes a while to understand you well, especially if you tend to speak in any of the redneck dialects. But *Just* being able to make a call with your voice is a big, big step forward. And it's not a lot of investment if you already have a cell phone. You night think on it.

Yes. And many Android watches also can do fall detection. Not just Google. Alexa and Siri too. I am not familiar with Alexa based or Siri based systems, but they are there.

I will be upgrading my watch. Really, that was the point of failure. That was the only thing I had left on my body while I slept, I relied on it, and it flat let me down. So that's a thing.

But I doubt I will be going Apple. I will stay in the Droid sphere, just because I am already so committed to it.

Fair enough. I only made the switch to Apple maybe 18 months ago myself ... mainly because my Fitbit kept losing its connection to my phone, and my hearing is bad enough that I rely on that haptic buzz on my wrist to let me know when I have a call or a text coming in.

I do live a ways out of town by myself. I have a cell phone...but it's not smart, it's dumb. :silly: But I keep it with me especially when I go outside. I am a dinosaur that is hanging on to my expensive landline and not sure I can afford a smart phone as well. But for safety's sake, I might have to look into it. Getting old ain't for sissies, is it, lol.

I have a friend with one of those. Her daughter pays the bill so I'm not sure what it costs. If she gets on the floor for some reason, it asks her continuously if she has fallen. That's not a bad thing.

Losing your hearing is difficult for many reasons including not being able to carry on intelligent conversation. Especially in a crowd.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I grieve over my hearing loss because I lose connection with loved ones and people in general.

Hearing loss is brutal. The lost joy of music also sucks.
