The first season of the Paramount+ series Landman has turned out to be a very surprising hit. Not merely because of the incredible acting by Billy Bob Thornton as the landman Tommy Norton, or by Jon Hamm as Monty Miller the oil company CEO, but also surprisingly because it has been giving the audience economic lessons, told in an entertaining manner, on the importance of the petroleum industry.

The final episode of the season, although quite thrilling in its development (no spoilers here) was equally as impressive for what it revealed about the oil business starting with the opener of the episode with this voiceover narrative by the late radio host Paul Harvey. Later when the oil company lawyer Rebecca Falcone expresses moral qualms about fracking, Tommy Norton gives her a lesson on why it is necessary:

Yeah, well, basically what they say is true, and anyone who has any sense knows it. Notice she never articulates a reason for her 'belief'.

Which is pretty much where it is. The OK earthquakes aren't caused by fraccing, they are a combination of tectonic stress, existing faults, and wastewater (produced water) injection.

North Dakota has well over 10,000 fracced horizontal wells, often multistage fracs, and about the lowest seismicity of any place in the country. Our record earthquake was in 1968 (before horizontal drilling) and a whopping 4.4. That might rattle a few dishes (like a heavy truck going by), but most Californians likely wouldn't notice it.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Love the show and only thru Episode 5 so far.

Neve seen a show with so many one liners like Thornton has.  Wish they were catalogued by someone.

Watched the whole thing. Starts out Great, but the show sort of trails off in the last few episodes.
But yes, I liked it. Whether or not his daughter has sex or not, is not a 'gripping plotline' to me.

   I want to watch this.

Another great Billy Bob Thornton movie by the Cohen Brothers (2001).
