Senate confirms Chris Wright to lead Energy Department

The Senate confirmed Chris Wright to lead the Department of Energy, where he will play a key role in pursuing the administration’s goals of lowering energy prices and boosting oil production.

Wright, confirmed Monday evening in a 59-38 vote, was the founder and CEO of the oil service firm Liberty Energy. Wright will oversee the nation’s energy infrastructure and use of clean energy technologies. The Trump administration has promised to boost oil production to lower energy prices.

Wright, 59, will also be responsible for ensuring the nation’s electric grid can withstand the growing energy demand from artificial intelligence and data centers.

“Chris Wright understands that affordable, abundant energy is imperative to our national security,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said on the Senate floor on Monday. “We must rebuild trust with the American people and secure our place as the dominant global energy leader.”

Lee chairs the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, where Wright received bipartisan support from its members. Wright received a fairly friendly confirmation hearing last month, where he highlighted his approach to energy policy.

“The only way you can drive down the price of a critical commodity is to grow the supply,” Wright told lawmakers at his confirmation hearing. “I’m 100% committed to growing our electricity grid and our energy production and removing those barriers that are standing in the way.”  .  .  .

This is the first true energy executive I can recall in this role.  Most if not all have been politicians like Granholm or Perry.

He will dart out of the box with actions as he already knows the problems and ways to mitigate them.

It will be a pleasure to watch, particularly as we have solid Department Heads in Interior and EPA, traditionally the primary opponents to our energy development, whether in oil, gas, coal or nuclear. 

Nuclear will likely be the most pleasant surprise of all.

Any nuclear project will take many years to complete, far longer than Trump will be in office. Like the Keystone pipeline it would get abandoned by the next Democrat administration being a huge economic loss for whomever contracted to build it. The projects are going to have to be shorter term in order to be completed.

Scott Turner was confirmed on Wednesday to be the next secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

He was confirmed by a bipartisan vote of 55-44.

The former NFL player was nominated by President Donald Trump to lead HUD in his second term. His nomination cleared a key procedural hurdle on Tuesday night, by a margin of 55-45. Two Democrats joined Republicans on the vote, making it bipartisan.

Despite Democratic tactics to delay the confirmation vote, the Senate confirmed Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Republicans backed Vought’s nomination, arguing he proved a qualified candidate for the role since he previously held the position during President Donald Trump’s first term. Democrats, however, raised multiple concerns about his nomination and said his views on the Impoundment Control Act, which reinforces that Congress holds the power of the purse, disqualified him from the role.

Democrats held a 30-hour-long protest against Vought's nomination, delivering speeches in the middle of the night on Wednesday in an attempt to delay the confirmation vote.

The Senate, in a chaotic final floor vote on Thursday evening, voted to confirm Vought to lead the OMB, 53 to 47.
