‘Life-threatening, destructive winds’ are here, LA fire official says

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said that “Life threatening and destructive and widespread winds” are in Los Angeles County Tuesday.

“We are carefully managing our operations to ensure that we can quickly respond to any new fires,” she said.

“I urge and everybody here urges you to remain alert as danger has not yet passed,” Crowley also said. “Please follow all evacuation warnings and orders without delay and prioritize your safety.”

The Angeles National Forest is now “temporarily closed” due to “critical fire danger.”

“The entire Angeles National Forest is temporarily closed for public safety and the protection of natural resources from Jan. 14, 2025, at 12 a.m. through Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 12:00 midnight. This closure is tied to critical fire danger,” the U.S. Forest Service wrote on X.

“The Angeles National Forest uses a system of graduated fire danger levels to indicate fire risk and corresponding restrictions for visitors, recreational cabin owners, and concessioners,” the U.S. Forest Service also said on its website. “A violation of the law can result in a $5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. Anyone causing a wildfire is liable for all costs of suppressing the fire.”

By the bye...

I find the total absence of the mainstream media covering the 70mph winds today in favor of total coverage of the Pete Hegseth confirmation hearing to be hypocritical.

At least cut away for 5 minutes now and then...geez!

President Biden, Vice President Harris and Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas attended a briefing about the ongoing Southern California wildfires on Monday.

During the briefing, Biden said that the wildfires were" the worst in history," and added that firefighters were able to prevent the largest fires from moving into the area.

The federal government will cover the costs for 180 days, Biden said, which is expected to cost tens of billions of dollars. He has also activated 500 Marines to help California at this time.

The president also said that officials expect strong wind gusts that could be more fuel for fire. He did not take any questions from journalists at the briefing, but when Harris was asked if her Los Angeles home was OK, she appeared to mouth “so far.”

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell was also at the briefing and said that her agency will reimburse hotel costs for families. She noted that FEMA may deny some applications if adequate documentation is not provided.

Fox News' Sarah Tobianski contributed to this report.

Well Senator Johnson, fair enough. CDF failed to clear brush in Topanga State Park, despite LA requesting they do so.

Now do the aid adjustment that accounts for the Department of the Interior's failure to clear brush in Angeles National Forest, where the Eaton and Hurst Fires started. And maybe reform the pertinent agencies within Interior so that brush clearing projects that actually get done don't take 5 years to get approval, and more brush clearance projects actually gets done.

In the real world, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Federal courts mandated the water flows into the Sacramento-Dan Joaquin River Delta, https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/u-s-supreme-court-rejects-appeals-to-lift-plan-protecting-delta-smelt/ .

For extra credit, one can look at a map of California and learn a few relevant facts:

1. How many hundreds of miles separate the nearest part of the Sacramento River from LA.

2. How many scores of miles separate the closest San Joaquin River tributary from LA.

3. What >4000 feet mountains are between that tributary and LA.

I should not need to include this, but in real life I have always thought the Delta Smelt water flow restrictions stupid.

Further concerning water in California, the existing California State Water Project currently captures 2.4 million acre-feet of water from the Northern California Feather and Sacramento Rivers. About 200 thousand acre-feet go to the SF Bay Area. The remaining 2.2 million acre-feet of water go south to coastal counties, San Joaquin Valley farmers, the Los Angeles area (pumped over the Tehachapis), and to the San Diego area.

Pressure to limit further water transfers from Northern California was coming years before the Enviros started yammering and decades before the moronic Delta Smelt restrictions from Northern California farmers concerned about their water rights, their way of life, being taken away to benefit the more populous (= majority in the legislature) Southern California. I heard some of these farmers' discussions back in the 1960s because my Dad was a farmer in Yolo County, NorCal. SoCal attitudes of entitlement exacerbated that NorCal opposition. As I posted above, look at a map of California to see from how far SoCal wants to capture and transfer more water.

What I get out of this is the thought of returning federal lands back to the states wherein they reside.

Federal control is always problematic and the locals suffer the consequences of poor management.  If the state owned these lands, more accountability is certain instead of finger pointing.

I would love if Texas used its surplus with the continuing purchase of federal lands and deal them out of the equation.

The gal that gets paid $750k per year to manage water resources for the county certainly must have been aware, but guess what?  Look at her Linkedin and nothing surfaces that water management is a priority for her.

It is renewables, environment, and of course equity, NOT water management.

Tearful LA fire union prez warned of dangerous fire department understaffing last year: ‘Someone will die’

A Los Angeles fire union president had warned the city about staffing shortfalls prior to the deadly fires that have ravaged the county for more than a week, according to a new interview.

Freddy Escobar, president of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, broke down during an interview with CNN where he described the dire warnings he gave to officials that went unheeded.

At a commission meeting just last month, Escobar told LA city officials that short staffing in the Los Angeles Fire Department was “dire” adding that “someone will die,” according to a CNN report.

“You’re not supposed to make me cry,” Escobar, a 35-year veteran of the LAFD, told to correspondent Kyung Lah, while wiping away a tear and walking away from the camera.

“This is a woefully understaffed fire department,” Escobar said. “We’re either going to have a fire department that’s going to reflect 2025, or we’re going to have a fire department that’s going to reflect the 1960s.”

How California eco-bureaucrats halted a Pacific Palisades fire safety project to save an endangered shrub

By Alex Oliveira
California’s eco-bureaucrats halted a wildfire prevention project near the Pacific Palisades to protect an endangered shrub.

It’s just the latest clash between fire safety and conservation in California that is coming under scrutiny following the devastating outbreak of the Palisades Fire — the most devastating blaze in Los Angeles history, which has consumed the very same area.

In 2019, the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP) began replacing nearly 100-year-old power line poles cutting through Topanga State Park, when the project was halted within days by conservationists outraged that federally endangered Braunton’s milkvetch plants had been trampled during the process.

The goal of the project was to improve fire safety for the Pacific Palisades area by replacing the wooden poles with steel, widening fire-access lanes in the area, and installing wind- and fire-resistant power lines — all after the area was identified as having an “elevated fire risk,” according to the LA Times.

To save the bush is going to likely cost 100s of billions of dollars in fire damage which likely consumed the bush anyway.

I don't recall everything burning down in the 60's. In fact you would need fewer firemen if the state/fed did land management like they did in the 60's.

Resident: Firefighters Did Not Respond to Palisades Fire for 44 Minutes

Firefighters only responded 45 minutes after a prominent Pacific Palisades resident called 911 on Tuesday morning, January 7, by which time the Palisades Fire had begun burning out of control in high winds, a local resident says.

National Weather Service continues 'particularly dangerous fire' warning for Los Angeles area

One week since deadly and massive wildfires broke out in the Los Angeles area, Southern California remains under a "particularly dangerous situation" warning from the National Weather Service.

Historic wildfires have forced tens of thousands of residents to flee as their homes and businesses were destroyed. At least 24 people have been killed and dozens more are missing, officials said.

New smaller fires have ignited in Ventura County since Monday, but thanks to the heroic effort of firefighters they have been kept much smaller than the Palisades and Eaton Fires, which together burned more than 38,000 acres in Los Angeles County.

The Palisades Fire is 18% contained as of Wednesday morning, and the Eaton Fire is 35% contained, but the rate of spread for both fires is much diminished since last week.

Weather conditions are expected to improve after Wednesday, with calmer winds and higher humidity forecast. Gusts of up to 60 mph will still be possible for areas that are still burning out of control, "Fox & Friends" weather anchor Janice Dean reported.

Michael Rapaport goes ballistic on Gavin Newsom: ‘Trump-proofing California? Try fire-proofing'

Actor Michael Rapaport went off on California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a video on Tuesday, telling the Democrat "there’s no more mistakes for you, you’re done!"

The "Only Murders in the Building" actor said that "Gavin with the good hair Newsom" was talking about "Trump-proofing" California when he should have been focused on "fire-proofing" the state.

"You’re talking about Trump this, Trump that. He’s not even president," the 54-year-old said in a video he posted to Instagram as the Southern California fires, which have burned thousands of homes, entered their second week.

Rapaport has also been critical of Trump in the past, but said that Vice President Kamala Harris lost his vote in the 2024 election because of Israel.

"Get the f--- out of here!" he said of Newsom. "‘We’ll do better next time. We need to learn from our mistakes,’" he mocked.

"You’re not running for sixth grade class president, he added," jokingly calling him "Nancy’s nephew," referring to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "Them days are over."

"What a good old boy you turned out to be, you little bulls--- artist," he added.

When California legislature passed bills to send Sacramento River water to southern California, Gruesome Newsome vetoed them in order to appeal to *environmentalists* and *save* the Delta smelt.  Oops!  Extremely foolish move.

Newsom's veto was a card trick intended to support his plan for the Delta tunnel project.

I don't recall everything burning down in the 60's. In fact you would need fewer firemen if the state/fed did land management like they did in the 60's.
1961 Bel Air fire, 484 homes, 6090 acres

1966 Loop Fire, faulty electrical wire at Nike site, can’t find number of acres but twelve members of a Hot Shot fire crew died.

Big Sur 1960 - burned through a substantial portion of the Big Sur coastline

I am sure there are more, we just forget.

Illegal Immigrant Arrested Near LA Fire With Blowtorch Is A Convicted Felon With History Of Violence

Jason Hopkins
Immigration Reporter
January 14, 2025

A blowtorch-wielding man subdued by Los Angeles residents in a viral online video is living in the United States unlawfully despite multiple arrests and an assault conviction, federal immigration authorities confirmed.

Juan Manuel Sierra, a 33-year-old Mexican national, is an illegal migrant “gotaway” who carries an extensive rap sheet with local law enforcement, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson stated to the Daily Caller News Foundation. Sierra is currently being held by Los Angeles police on suspicion of contributing to the wildfires that have devastated Southern California in the past several days. “Juan Manuel Sierra, 33, aka Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva, Juan Leva, Leyva Moniker, and Juan Sierra, is a Mexican national who entered the U.S. unlawfully at an unknown date and location without inspection by an immigration official,” the ICE spokesperson said. “Sierra has multiple encounters with law enforcement from November 2016 to present for a variety of charges and was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon Oct. 10, 2023, in Van Nuys, California.”

I think the FBI director said it was an old Mejican tradition to walk through areas devastated by fires with a blow torch.

I'm assuming this feeds where the fires were? If so what an easy target for some opportunistic terrorists, enviro group, cartel...(insert here), and the $1T question, did any govt officials even have a whiff of prior knowledge?
The question is why didn’t the DEI hire, making 700K a year, whose job it is to know not know?

I hear  that Gavin Newsom made it illegal to make "below market" offers to anyone affected by the fires.

Despite the First Amendment.

Therefore here is my all-cash offer to any willing seller of $17.91 for their fire ravaged home.

I mean it! Dead serious!  tipping hat!!

I didn't say there weren't fires back then. But 484 homes verses over 12,000 isn't even close. There's a lot of reasons for that, but one big one is land management.

Los Angeles wildfires destroy Hunter Biden artworks 'worth millions'

A trove of nearly 200 pieces of art by Hunter Biden has been destroyed amid the wildfires in Southern California.

A source close to the Biden family told the New York Post that the art had been in storage near the Pacific Palisades home of Biden's attorney, Kevin Morris. The source said the artwork was worth millions of dollars.

Morris lives in a five-bedroom, six-bathroom home, which is among the few houses still intact, the Post reported.

Biden is reportedly a self-taught artist who learned while doing stints in recovery for drug addiction.

Firefighters brace for strong winds amid progress against wildfires

Winds began picking up in Southern California on Wednesday as firefighters continue to battle several wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes so far.

A day after firefighters got a reprieve with lighter winds than expected, gusts were hitting up to 35 mph on the coast and in valleys and 55 mph in the mountains before dawn on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Winds were manageable on Tuesday, which allowed responders to make gains in an effort to control the most destructive fires.

Firefighters believe lighter winds will make for better containment conditions on Friday and Saturday.

The weather service issued red-flag warnings — indicating temperatures are warm, humidity is low and strong winds are expected — from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. from the Central Coast 275 miles south to the border with Mexico, the Associated Press reported.

Japan to donate $2 million to wildfire recovery efforts

Japan will donate $2 million toward wildfire relief efforts in Southern California, officials said Wednesday.

“In response to the devastating damage caused by the wildfires in California, Japan has decided to provide a total of 2 million U.S. dollars of assistance through the American Red Cross, as a relief measure for the victims of the disaster,” the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles said in a statement.

“Japan will actively provide assistance for the relief of the victims and the earliest possible recovery of the affected areas,” the consulate said.

On Monday, Consul General Kenko Sone relayed his condolences to those impacted by the wildfires.

"A heartbreaking and tragic week has passed since the Palisades and Eaton Fires started on January 7th. Struggles continue. The devastation and challenges are beyond our imagination,'' Sone wrote. "Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the fires...Even under such difficult circumstances, it is encouraging to see so many organizations, volunteers, and individuals donating food, supplies and time to help with ongoing efforts. The perseverance and resilience of Angelenos is amazing and what the City of Angels represents.

"Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles is now working with Japanese and Japanese American businesses and communities to join these relief efforts. Japan is a nation that has experienced natural disasters and we are thankful for the generous support supplied by Southern California when it was needed the most. We stand with you all to support immediate needs and will do our best to collaborate with authorities, communities, and all of you to rebuild communities devastated by the fires,'' the message continued.

Pasadena temporarily bans leaf blowers to combat poor air quality
by: Iman Palm
Posted: Jan 15, 2025 / 10:06 AM PST
Updated: Jan 15, 2025 / 10:19 AM PST

The city of Pasadena has issued a temporary ban on power air blowers and air-propelling devices, like leaf blowers, until further notice.

Officials hope the ban will help limit the negative health impacts of fire ash, smoke, and particulate matter due to the ongoing Eaton Fire and strong winds.

“Power air blowers and air propelling devices stir up ash and particulate matter into the air, further worsening air quality and increasing health risks for everyone, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, older adults, children, and other vulnerable populations. Temporarily banning these devices will help protect the health and wellbeing of residents,” a news release said. ... KTLA

Last year Gov. Newsom vetoed a bill that would have let CalFire retain seasonal firefighters to help with staffing shortages. His veto forced the layoff of thousands of seasonal firefighters, who he never replaced despite his promises. This is negligence of the highest order.
