WASHINGTON — The White House offered no public condolences Tuesday on the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney — saying flags were lowered to half-staff at the executive mansion because the law requires it.

President Trump has repeatedly attacked Cheney, who died Monday at age 84, as a “warmonger” and sparred with his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) who served as the top Republican on the House select committee that investigated Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Both Dick and Liz Cheney endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris in last year’s election, with the former VP saying Trump was the greatest threat to the country since its founding.

Dick Cheney did as he pleased, even if it meant violating every rule in the book.  Many contracts were awarded to Halliburton, the company he was formerly CEO of and I assume held huge positions in the company when he was VP.  The problem was they were not awarded according to the existing law. 

All federal contracts require competion and the government awards the contract to the lowest bidder or that contractor with the highest evaluation.  That never happened when Cheney was VP.  10s if not 100s of billions of dollars in contracts went to Halliburton, no competition.  IMHO, these actions were deserving of impeachment at the time.

Cheney just did as he pleased, and idiot Bush stood there with his hands in his pockets. 

He will not be missed by me.  And I abhor his corrupt daughter.  Any Republican that supported Harris against Trump is no Republican.  He was a soundrel that got away with plenty of crimes in my book!!!!!!!

He was the French officer in The Patriot with Mel Gibson.  He was in several other movies I enoyed through the years.   He was one of France's most revered actors.

Cowboys' second-year DE Marshawn Kneeland dies at 24

FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died Thursday morning, the team announced.

"It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family," the team said in a statement.

He was 24.

The team did not disclose any details of how Kneeland died.

The news of Beam's death and subsequent arrest of Cedric Irving, Jr., 27, were announced Friday, a day after Beam, 66, was shot before noon in the 900 block of Fallon Street, near the Laney Fieldhouse. That building is adjacent to the college’s football field and houses the school’s athletic facilities and resources, where Beam worked.

Irving was spotted before dawn Friday by Alameda County sheriff's deputy Miguel Torres at the San Leandro BART station, conspicuously carrying two duffle bags, a source and police said.

At a Friday news conference, Asst. Police Chief James Beere said that Irving knew Beam, "but they did not have a relationship."

He also said that Irving was not a Laney College student but had been known to "loiter around the campus." Irving had played football at Skyline High in 2017, according to Max Preps, but not during the time that Beams coached there.

Beere did state that Irving was "on campus for a specific reason," and that Beam was "targeted," though he wouldn't say more, as charges are pending.

Representatives of alt-country star Todd Snider announced on his official social media accounts that the singer-songwriter died on Nov. 15. No cause of death was provided, but his family shared that the Oregon-born singer had recently been hospitalized with pneumonia.  He was 59.

The news came shortly after his "High Lonesome and Then Some Tour" was canceled just two stops into a 13-city route after the singer-songwriter - who spent formative years in San Marcos - was injured in a violent assault in Salt Lake City. Snider's last album, "High, Lonesome and Then Some," was released on Oct. 17, less than a month before his death.

"We have some difficult news to share. After Todd returned home to recover last week, he began having trouble breathing and was admitted to the hospital in Hendersonville, Tennessee," a post on Snider's official Facebook page on Nov. 14 said. "We learned from his doctors that he had been quietly suffering from an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia."

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Snider's publicists said he was violently assaulted before a Nov. 1 show that was canceled hours before it was supposed to take place. He appeared in Holy Cross Hospital where court records obtained by the Tribune say he "was accused of yelling at hospital staff and threatening to beat them up." He subsequently was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass, threats of violence and disorderly conduct.

Piecing together details from the linked article and an article linked in that article, it sounds like Snider had been assaulted in South Salt Lake City on 11/1 and taken to the hospital. The following day, 11/2, he got into some sort of dispute at the hospital, was arrested, held for a day, and then released (11/3). He was at home until he was taken to a hospital on 11/14 with pneumonia, from which he died. Putting all that together, it sounds like he ignored or was unaware of his pneumonia for a week or more. He seems to have been a bit cantankerous, so ignoring the symptoms is plausible. OTOH, based on recent personal experience *, being unaware of any symptoms until the pneumonia was serious is also plausible. Either way, his being held for a day by the police is separated from his hospitalization by 11 days, so blaming the police for his death doesn't work, due to anachronism.

* Recently, I was unaware of symptoms on a Saturday, was unusually very chilled Sunday evening, and had to be hospitalized the next day with pneumonia, for 10 days.
