Trump, Vance call for clean CR, debt ceiling hike; urge GOP to sink Johnson compromise
by Brett Samuels - 12/18/24 4:41 PM ET

President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance on Wednesday called for Republicans to approve a clean stopgap funding bill paired with a hike to the debt ceiling, saying the previous government-funding measure negotiated by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) should be torpedoed.

In a lengthy statement issued amid growing opposition to the Johnson bill from Trump allies and House Republicans, Vance and Trump said lawmakers should pass a “streamlined spending bill that doesn’t give Chuck Schumer and the Democrats everything they want.”

“Republicans want to support our farmers, pay for disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025,” the statement said. “The only way to do that is with a temporary funding bill WITHOUT DEMOCRAT GIVEAWAYS combined with an increase in the debt ceiling. Anything else is a betrayal of our country. Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH.

“If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF,” he added.

The statement left unclear precisely what would happen to disaster aid and assistance to farmers that had been included in the bill. The two voiced support for such provisions, but also called for a clean funding bill.

The government is set to shut down on Saturday unless lawmakers can pass a funding measure through the House and Senate by then.

Maybe things really are changing. The old rules don't work anymore with the public using social media for their information.

House GOP leaders scramble for Plan B after Trump, Musk lead conservative fury against spending bill

House GOP leaders are working toward a backup plan after an initial bipartisan deal to avoid a partial government shutdown on Friday was killed by an avalanche of conservative opposition.

The legislation angered conservatives in both the House and Senate, as well as President-elect Trump's pick to co-chair his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk.

As Musk called for lawmakers who supported the bill to lose their seats, Trump's presidential transition team released an official joint statement by Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance opposing the initial iteration of the deal.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., confirmed to reporters that the deal was dead while leaving the Capitol on Wednesday night....................

IMHO I think things are going to change significantly under Trump's 2nd administration in a very positive way. Don't get me wrong the leftists and the GOPe are still going to try to continue to wreak havoc on his administration but there are a lot of people who are much wiser and realize the disinformation that they've been fed for so long.

JD Vance
@JDVance

A statement from President Donald J. Trump and Vice President-Elect JD Vance:

The most foolish and inept thing ever done by Congressional Republicans was allowing our country to hit the debt ceiling in 2025. It was a mistake and is now something that must be addressed.

Meanwhile, Congress is considering a spending bill that would give sweetheart provisions for government censors and for Liz Cheney. The bill would make it easier to hide the records of the corrupt January 6 committee—which accomplished nothing for the American people and hid security failures that happened that day. This bill would also give Congress a pay increase while many Americans are struggling this Christmas.

Increasing the debt ceiling is not great but we’d rather do it on Biden’s watch. If Democrats won’t cooperate on the debt ceiling now, what makes anyone think they would do it in June during our administration? Let’s have this debate now. And we should pass a streamlined spending bill that doesn’t give Chuck Schumer and the Democrats everything they want.

Republicans want to support our farmers, pay for disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025. The only way to do that is with a temporary funding bill WITHOUT DEMOCRAT GIVEAWAYS combined with an increase in the debt ceiling. Anything else is a betrayal of our country.

Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF. It is Schumer and Biden who are holding up aid to our farmers and disaster relief.

THIS CHAOS WOULD NOT BE HAPPENING IF WE HAD A REAL PRESIDENT. WE WILL IN 32 DAYS!

Jeffries suggests Democrats will oppose a ‘clean’ funding bill after Johnson’s plan falters
by Mike Lillis - 12/18/24 5:32 PM ET

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) suggested Wednesday that Democrats will oppose any federal spending bill that strays from the bipartisan deal announced a day before, accusing GOP leaders of reneging on the agreement at risk of a government shutdown.

In a brief statement, Jeffries invoked the growing conservative outcry over the negotiated continuing resolution (CR) — including opposition from President-elect Trump — and warned Republicans that they will “own” the economic and political fallout if a shutdown occurs.

“House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government. And hurt the working class Americans they claim to support,” Jeffries posted on social platform X. “You break the bipartisan agreement, you own the consequences that follow.”

The warning arrives as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), under heavy pressure from conservatives on and off Capitol Hill, is considering a move to scrap the negotiated CR and shift to a “clean” bill that drops many of the additional provisions agreed to by the two parties. That list includes economic help for the nation’s farmers and $100 billion in emergency aid for victims of natural disasters around the country.

I'd believe in Faries before I believe this current Congress would do anything in our favor.

No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Benny Johnson

@bennyjohnson
A very prominent Republican member of Congress just called me and told me that GOP House Leadership threatened to withhold hurricane funding from their storm ravaged district unless they voted for the bloated, woke CR.

Also threatened their committee seats.

Dirty moves...

This is what Democrats do.  And now, so do Republicans.

Trump, Musk fire back after Dem leader blames House GOP for breaking bipartisan agreement
Elon Musk responds to Hakeem Jeffries: 'You seem to think the public is dumb. They are not'
By Greg Wehner Fox News
Published December 18, 2024 8:39pm EST

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., while speaking at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., called out House Republicans for breaking a bipartisan agreement to fund the government and avoid a government shutdown, accusing them of hurting everyday Americans across the country.

On Wednesday, House GOP leaders scrambled to search for a backup plan after reaching an initial bipartisan deal to avoid a partial government shutdown this Friday was buried by a barrage of opposition from conservative leaders.

Jeffries spoke about the failed deal, accusing Republicans and their leaders for not reaching the agreement.

"House Republicans, house democrats, Senate. Republicans and Senate Democrats reached a bipartisan agreement to fund the government, keep it open and meet the needs of the American people," Jeffries said, pointing out the agreement would provide disaster assistance for those affected by extreme weather events. "House Republicans have now unilaterally decided to break a bipartisan agreement that they made. House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government and hurt everyday Americans all across this country…An agreement is an agreement. It was bipartisan and there was nothing more to say."

The minority leader also fired off a post on X, saying, "House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government. And hurt working class Americans they claim to support. You break the bipartisan agreement; you own the consequences that follow."
