In an interview Thursday with WNBC-TV, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Ivy League graduate Luigi Mangione may have targeted the company because of its size and influence.

He said a note was found in Mangione's possession when he was detained in Pennsylvania.

Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder as an act of terrorism after prosecutors upgraded the complaint against him in New York on Tuesday.

A grand jury indicted Mangione on 11 counts, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told reporters.

Mangione, 26, faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted on all counts.

The counts were issued in the slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as prosecutors work to bring Mangione to a New York court from a Pennsylvania jail.

Bragg said Thompson’s death “was a killing that was intended to evoke terror” as further details are being made public about accused Mangione and his recent past.

The outpouring of support has raised alarms among law enforcement officials who fear the suspect is being idolized.

A crowdfunding campaign on GiveSendGo was launched by a group calling itself “The December 4th Legal Committee,” referencing the date of Thompson’s killing in Midtown Manhattan. Mangione is accused of ambushing and fatally shooting Thompson as he walked to a shareholders’ meeting.


The campaign claims to support Mangione’s “constitutional right to fair legal representation” and has attracted thousands of donors, many of whom left supportive messages.
