I went in 2011 when my son's high school band was marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and I'm right there with you.  It was a fun place to visit once.  I don't have any interest at all in going back.  There is just too much small-town girl left in me, I expect.

I actually worked and lived right outside NYC for 6 years and did not have a desire to go into the city other than the mandatory tourist places when friends and family visited.

Never felt safe, and that is not due to just being a big city as it was after working in downturn London for several years.

Blacks have been murdering whites at the rate of around 400-600 annually for the last few decades.
Whites have been murdering blacks at the rate of less than one hundred annually probably less than fifty.
Because if there were more, you would be seeing countless stories in Big Media about it. A white person murdering (or killing justifiably as in Penny's case) a black person rates huge headlines and stories screaming about racism from the usual suspects in the media.
The bureau of crime statistics counts Hispanics in with whites and gives  a number of around 250 annually of whites murdering blacks which is still less than half the number of whites murdered by blacks annually.

In NYC, there will always be a charge against someone that causes the death of another, particularly of a black man.  And this act had so much video evidence. The longest video was taken by a Latino journalist who sold it to the highest bidder! That contributed to the hyper prosecution.  And the NY media, discounting the NY Post, will always bend toward the stricken black community, lax fathers et al. 

BTW- Many of the jury court artist drawings shown are of the full jury (with alternates). They mix all the jurors together in the box. I think the poor suffering alternates should not be in the same box as the ones who will actually do the deliberations. From what I know, it's rare that alternates are called to replace a juror.

The weather will be nicer in NYC this weekend, so protests may still erupt. I would be surprised if none did.
