Quote
Gen X, of which this editor is a proud member, saved the country by voting for Donald Trump by a 53-point margin. Gen X is the generation of latchkey kids who would ride their bikes around the neighborhood until it got dark.

Attitudes toward children have certainly changed, at least in Georgia, where ABC News reports that a mother was arrested on charges of reckless conduct for letting her 10-year-old walk less than a mile from their home to the store. No, really.

I'm sure we all can remember our childhoods, when our mothers let us walk all over the neighborhood as long as we were back by dinnertime. Whenever we visited our grandparents, then living in a small WV town, we'd wander around for hours, going "downtown" to the 5&10 to buy baseball cards, then to the park to climb on the WWI gun (we called it a cannon; not sure what it was) or go to an American Legion baseball game. Good grief. It's no wonder the youngest generations are such snowflakes and delicate fleurs.

As an aside, I mapped out the route I walked to school back in the day: 1.8 miles each way. Oh, the humanity!!

Starting in 1st grade I walked about a mile to school.  I'd start out alone, stop at a friends house down the block, out he would come and together we walked the rest of the way picking up stragglers along the route till we had a group on 6 or 7 munchkins trudging up to school. When we arrived we would split off and enter thru the BOYS entrance or the GIRLS went to their entrance on the opposite side of the building.

I think it was then I realized there were only two genders.

I remember spending all day outside, without parental supervision. We did get into some mischief but I think it did us good.

Yeah! Through the snow uphill both ways...to hear my children tell it. Truthfully, those walks to and from were where enduring friendship were made. I still ocassionaly see someone from that crowd.

Every pickup truck in the parking lot at my HS had a gun rack with at least a shotgun and a rifle on it every day.

In 1969 in junior high I was in the California Cadet Corps, we drilled with Springfield 03’s (plugged) and had target practice on the tennis courts with 22’s, this was in Buena Park next to a six lane road and no one cared. I also carried my rifle home walking the mile and a half of busy streets and through residentials and not a shit was given, no police were called and no one panicked 😱

Before Columbine every pick-up sat the school I worked at had the same. After Columbine, they wee kept hidden behind th4e seat. I had previously taught sat san inner city school and I asked the Principal about it. He told me that if they didn't get at least one deer, it could be a skinny Christmas. That school used to strip and refinish stocks, reblue barrels, make new firing pins etc.... No one thought twice about it.
