Actually, this makes sense if he (and his wife) are indeed committed communists. Such "holdings" are those of capitalists, not of believing Party members.
In David Horowitz' book "Radical Son", he describes how his parents (who were bona fide communist party members) once declined to buy the Sunnyside (NY) apartment they rented when the apartment complex was converted to co-ops. He mentioned that his father didn't believe that as a Party member he should own private property in the form of a home.
So the fact that walz & wife never made such investments isn't all that shocking, if you realize "where they're coming from" ...
