That's a big weathervane. Hopefully, that works, and it survives. Had it been locked in place it likely would not.

In the movie trailer for "Twisters", it shows a huge mega machine under his truck/SUV (can't recall), which is actually a giant iron screw which bores straight into the earth.

But I recall seeing a demonstration of the power/strength of a simple 2X4 piece of lumber become a 'missile'...the board went halfway siding like a dart.  8ft long.

To me, that's as dangerous as hanging on to leaning telephone poles.

The idea that somebody looked at a purple onion and called it a red onion really bothers me.

Tampa zoo and aquarium staff to ride out Milton with the animals

Quote

Millions of people on Florida’s Gulf Coast are preparing to evacuate as Hurricane Milton threatens their lives. But not the zoo and aquarium animals of Tampa.

With staff members hurriedly preparing around them, the animals are chomping away on shrimp or eucalyptus as the area’s biggest threat in a century barrels toward humans and beasts alike. The employees know what to do, but many facilities are still reeling from the deadly effects of Hurricane Helene a week ago.

Power went out at 7:30.  Winds NE at 55 gusting to 90.  The big story on the north side is going to be fresh water flooding.  Rains are torrential.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

CNN host Anderson Cooper experienced the the storm’s wrath firsthand.

Cooper was drilled in the face with flying debris as he gave a live report in the midst of the powerful winds brought on by Hurricane Milton Wednesday night.

Cooper, posted near the Manatee River, attempted to explain how the storm impacted the water when he was met with Milton’s wrath, 30 minutes after the storm made landfall on Florida’s west-central coast. ...

If there was one extreme oddity of Milton that shocked me, versus watching others, the past 50 years was size of the spinoff tornadoes.  You can expect huge amounts of F0-F1 spinoffs, in any Hurricane.  BUT...  not EF3 looking suckers that look like they formed in Kansas or Oklahoma.

In fact when some of the first visuals came out, I questioned whether they were real or not.

Absolutely.  It became ridiculous.  Just report the vicinity of the hurricane in relation to the geography of where it's going to make landfall...that's all we need, and really all we have time for.  All their 'fluff' was ridiculous.

They interviewed one poor guy this morning who was extracting water out of his house and tearing out boards and a news reporter actually followed him around while he was trying to work.  It was beyond ridiculous.  Now if the reporter had actually pitched in and helped the poor guy, that would have been newsworthy.

Coast Guard video shows helicopter crew rescue man floating on a cooler 30 miles off Florida coast
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key on Wednesday evening as a Category 3 storm
 By Greg Wehner Fox News
Published October 10, 2024 6:34pm EDT

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew located and rescued a man who was seen clinging to a cooler in the Gulf of Mexico nearly 30 miles off Florida's central-west coast.

Coast Guard District 7, which covers South Carolina, Georgia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean Sea and Florida, posted video of the miraculous rescue Thursday afternoon.

In the video, a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Miami is seen approaching the man clinging to a cooler as a member of the crew is lowered into the water.

The crew member then swims over to the man in distress, before the video ends.

I'm right there with you. When they stand out there in all the wind, rain and flooding, why do they think they would be able to dissuade citizens from doing the same thing? After all, they see that the reporters aren't dying as a result of weathering the storm. Instead they're having what some would call an adventure. No one thinks they have a special dispensation for defying the weather. Why do they act like they do?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I mentioned that in another thread today!
