On close examination of the evidence, however, the narrative that Russia has the resources to prevail if it so chooses does not hold.

Ukrainian law enforcement launched an investigation into the murder of a civilian woman by the Russian forces in the Donetsk region, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine stated on November 14.

Preliminary reports indicate that on November 10, 2024, near the village of Terny in the Lyman community, Russian soldiers attacked a civilian woman. She was walking along the street when Russian troops opened fire on her. She died instantly from a gunshot wound.

Under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation was launched into violations of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder. Investigative actions are currently being conducted to clarify all details of the incident and to identify the deceased.

The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by SBU  in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.  .  .

To surround the eastern fortress city of Pokrovsk from the south, Russian forces first have to roll back Ukrainian defenses in Kurakhove, a village on the bank of the Vovcha River 18 miles south of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast.

The Ukrainian army’s 33rd Mechanized Brigade and its German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks stand in their way. On Monday, a powerful Russian force rolled toward Dalnje, just south of Kurakhove, clearly aiming to fight its way through the former in order to bypass and cut off the latter.

Well-aimed cannon fire from the 61-ton, four-person Leopard 2A4s—31 of which equip the 33rd Mechanized Brigade’s tank battalion—put a quick stop to the Russian assault. As a Ukrainian drone observed from overhead, at least one Leopard 2A4 firing armor-piercing rounds shot holes through two Russian tanks, an armored personnel carrier and several other vehicles. Ukrainian drones chased after the survivors.

The battle in Dalnje was a return to form for Ukraine’s tanks. The proliferation of explosive drones has changed how tankers fight on both sides of Russia’s wider war on Ukraine. “Enemy and friendly drones crisscross the air space, hunting for valuable targets like heavy armor and artillery,” David Kirichenko wrote for the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, D.C. “This aerial cat-and-mouse game has fundamentally altered tank tactics.”  .  .  .

Russia will reduce payments to troops injured in Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine as his government faces ballooning war costs and huge personnel losses.

A Kremlin decree introduced Wednesday and signed by the Russian president restricts medical payouts of 3 million rubles ($30,000) to those who suffer severe injuries in combat.

Previously the sum was available to anyone wounded. Now those with less severe injuries will only get between one million rubles ($10,000) and 100,000 rubles ($1,000).

Under the Kremlin's new guidelines, soldiers will only receive full compensation if they suffer "Section I" injuries that endanger their life or health or cause significant damage to their organs, such as severe spinal injuries, brain damage, rib fractures and broken limbs.

Less severe or "Section II" injuries warranting $10,000 compensation are temporary wounds such as, concussions, minor fractures and gunshot wounds that don't affect organs. Newsweek has contacted the Russian defense ministry for comment.

Legislation introduced at the start of the war in March 2022 entitling the families of those killed in the war to 7.4 million rubles ($75,000) compensation remains in place.  .  .

Ukraine’s intelligence service (SBU) has killed a Russian naval commander by detonating a bomb fitted underneath his car as he drove to work in occupied Crimea.

The SBU described Valery Trankovsky, the assassinated officer, as a “war criminal” who ordered missiles to be fired at civilian targets across Ukraine.

“The b------ repeatedly attacked Odesa and other peaceful cities, killing many civilians. He was an absolutely legitimate target in terms of the laws and customs of war,” an SBU source told Ukrainian media.

The source also said that Trankovsky, who was killed in the city of Sevastopol, had personally ordered ballistic missiles to be fired at the city of Vinnytsia in July 2022. The attack killed 29 people and injured more than 200.  .  .

I remember in the 80's there was a scandalous and notorious movie, Faces of Death, purported to show real deaths, but actually many of which were fake come to find out. And now, just casually browsing the web, i get to watch the gruesome deaths of people up close many sure deserved it as they were the enemy, but still they die in highly graphic ways, in HD quality in ways we'd be horrified at in the 80's.

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Protesters opposing a measure that would have allowed Russians to buy property in the Georgian territory of Abkhazia stormed into the separatist region’s parliament building and presidential office on Friday and clashed with police.

At least eight people were injured in the melee in the regional capital of Sukhumi on the Black Sea, news reports said.

The parliament was to have discussed ratifying the measure but postponed the session as the demonstrators gathered outside the gates of the government compound. They rammed a gate with a truck and streamed inside the grounds, throwing rocks at police who responded with tear gas.

President Aslan Bzhania’s office later announced he was preparing an order to remove the measure from consideration. Police then left the parliament building but demonstrators remained, demanding Bzhania’s resignation. Demonstrators also stormed into the presidential administration building and vowed to remain there until Bzhania resigned and snap elections were called.

Most of Abkhazia broke away from Georgia in fighting that ended in 1993, and Georgia lost control of the rest of the territory in the short war with Russia in 2008. Russia recognizes Abkhazia as an independent country, but many Abkhazians are concerned that the region of about 245,000 people is just a client state of Moscow.

Opponents of the property agreement say it would drive up prices of apartments and boost Moscow’s dominance in the region. Abkhazia’s mountains and Black Sea beaches make it a popular destination for Russian tourists  .  .  .

Although Ukraine’s Kharkiv counteroffensive pushed Russian troops away from most of Kharkiv Oblast in autumn 2022, in August 2023, Moscow still held about 29 settlements of the region on the left bank of the Oskil River.

In 2024, Russia began a new advance east of the Kharkiv region (Kupiansk axis, moving even closer towards the Oskil River) and north of the region (Kharkiv axis, moving towards Kharkiv in directions of Lyptsi and Vovchansk).

Baiev said that if Ukrainian troops see civilians near Russian soldiers, they are forced to stop attacking.

“When we see the enemy moving from the drone, we start firing at him or use artillery. But when we then see that a civilian — usually it’s an elderly civilian person— is near the target where [Russians] are, we understand that there won’t be any firing. Then, [we] need to wait for a civilian to leave or for an enemy to move to another location,” Baiev said.

According to him, Russians know about the Armed Forces’ principles and start living in civilian people’s homes on purpose. Sometimes, Baiev said, they move into the basements of residents’ homes and make civilians live above them.

“They protect themselves in this way because they know that, in that time [while they are in civilians’ homes], nothing will hit that house,” Baiev said.   .  .

Wow, that young Russian dude who cut off his own leg to survive when none of his own unit mates could or would help was just tough.  I actually feel really bad for the conscripts and mobiks who are being forced to fight in Ukraine by Putin...they're not at fault but just trying to survive like everybody else.  And Putin could care less about them.

Ukrainian troops reportedly surrounded and destroyed a small unit from the Russian 810th Naval Infantry Brigade on the northern edge of Ukraine’s 250-square-mile salient in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast on Friday.

It’s the latest disaster for one of the lead units in Russia’s eight-day-old counteroffensive in the oblast. Anticipating that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will lean on Ukraine to agree to an armistice that freezes the front line in place, Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to eject Ukrainian troops from Kursk before Trump’s January inauguration.

There are weeks of hard fighting ahead. But so far, the Russians have advanced just a few hundred yards while losing more than 100 vehicles and potentially thousands of troops killed and wounded.

The 2,000-person 810th Naval Infantry Brigade, backed by thousands of North Korean reinforcements, might be the hardest-hit. “The 810th brigade is bleeding right now,” one Russian blogger reported. “Every day [it] is sent on unprepared assaults” against the Ukrainian 95th Air Assault Brigade’s “persistent defense.”

The first two days of attacks on Nov. 7 and 8 cost the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade dearly—and revealed deep dysfunction in the brigade’s chain of command that has contributed to its catastrophic losses.

According to Russian blogger Romanov, the brigade’s officers told the Russian general staff the roads around the village of Pogrebki, on the front line just north of the Kursk salient, were clear of Ukrainian mines. “Logically, after receiving this information, the general staff issued an order to storm the settlement,” Romanov explained.

The roads weren’t clear of mines. The 810th Naval Infantry Brigade’s factory-fresh BTR-82 wheeled fighting vehicles exploded like firecrackers.  .  .  .

According to the report, "the increase in confirmed fatalities is now the highest during the entire duration of the war," reports the BBC. Specifically, it is 1.6 times the number of fallen compared to the same period last year. At the same time, there are twice as many as in 2022.

The BBC estimates that the increase is related to the intensity of the attacks. For example, the deployment of Russian forces in the Donetsk region claimed many victims. The case hinged on a denunciation - part of a rising trend of Russians informing on fellow citizens for their views on the war in Ukraine and other alleged political crimes. Critics say the wave of denunciations is helping President Vladimir Putin's government crack down on dissent.

In a video recorded as she was walking away from the clinic, the mother, Anastasia Akinshina, said she had told the doctor the boy was traumatised because his father was killed fighting for Russia in the war in Ukraine.

"Do you know what she told me? 'Well, my dear, what do you expect? Your husband was a legitimate target of Ukraine,'" Akinshina said, mimicking the doctor's voice and intonation.

Fighting back tears, Akinshina said she had raised the incident with the hospital administration and suspected they planned to hush it up.

"So the question is: where can I complain about this bitch now, so that she'll be kicked out of the bleep country or sent to the devil in jail?" she said in the video, which went viral on social media and thrust her into a high-profile criminal trial as the key prosecution witness.

At the trial, Buyanova denied making the comment. But despite a lack of further adult witnesses, the denunciation was sufficient to destroy her 40-year medical career and her life.  .  .

The Kerch Strait bridge could be hit by missiles capable of doing significant damage? About damn time. Russian refineries and oil storage facilities could be hit by missiles capable of doing significant damage? About damn time. Can't argue against any of that.  Russia targets Lviv in far western Ukraine with Iskander missiles periodically.  There is no reason they should be immune to similar long distance attacks on their own country.  They are the ones who set the rules.

The Kerch bridge needs to be taken out today.  Ukraine has had the capability to do so for months.  And it is only the Biden regime that has blocked them from doing so.
