Col Dmitry Golenkov was killed in a hammer attack

A Russian air force commander blamed for a lethal attack on a shopping centre in Ukraine has been found bludgeoned to death with a hammer.

Ukraine’s military intelligence said that it had assassinated Col Dmitry Golenkov, a senior officer in Russia’s 52nd heavy bomber regiment, with the “hammer of justice”.

Golenkov was said to be behind one of the most egregious attacks on a civilian target of the war. Images of a rocket striking the shopping centre, and its aftermath, were circulated widely.

Ukraine said on Monday: “A Russian Tu-22M3 pilot has been liquidated on the territory of the Russian Federation. His head was smashed with a hammer.”  .  .  .

Ukrainian troops have been hailed as heroes for their actions to evacuate their comrades while surrounded by Russian forces during Kyiv's incursion into the Kursk region.

Kyiv invaded the lightly defended border of the Russian region that borders the Sumy oblast on August 6, later saying it had seized 500 square miles. Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian and Russian defense ministries for comment by email.

However, the incursion coincided with Russian advances in the Donetsk oblast and questions over its objectives. While Moscow appeared slow to respond, it has now deployed 50,000 troops there, albeit at a cost to operations on the Donbas front.

Amid reports of Russian forces starting to regain territory, the Ukrainian Telegram channel DeepState reported of "heroism worthy of a film by the soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade."

The channel said that nine of the brigade members had taken positions in the settlement of Lyubimovka to help the evacuation of their wounded comrades before finding themselves surrounded by Russian snipers.

However, the Ukrainian Marines "refused to surrender" and so "made the difficult decision" to call for artillery fire on themselves.

The building they were in was hit and caught fire, but then all nine men were seen leaving, having survived the strike that had killed "a crowd of Russians."

The purported explosion and fire captured in the footage gave the Ukrainian troops cover to pick up the wounded personnel.  .  .

Austin announced another $400 million in military aid to Ukraine while meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday. The package included rocket and tube artillery ammunition, armored vehicles and a variety of anti-tank weapons, according to a Pentagon press release.

This is in my wheelhouse, having worked for a large semiconductor company for 35 years. 

All wafers in that factory (at all stages of production) are guaranteed to be lost.  Ingots probably not, those are created and sliced into wafers at some other location like Wacker company.  And moving a wafer fab is a major undertaking.  After the buildings are completed, it can take well over a year to qualify the wafers.  That's assuming they can salvage some of the equipment.

Doable in a war going this long, but Russia thought Ukraine would be a walk in the park.  As it is, this is a major disaster for them.  They will have to up their game getting parts from China.

I was hoping for your input! Even if their processes were "merely" reset to the stage of slicing wafers from ingots that's several weeks of production time lost (in addition to whatever was being fabbed).

Moving a fab line is a very big undertaking, so I can understand reluctance to do what hubristic optimism said was not necessary. OTOH, by summer or fall 2022 it should have been recognized that Ukraine wasn't going to be overrun quickly and the relatively short distance from Ukraine to the fab facility recognized as a concern. With a little creative thinking and @$$-kissing, the Russian company might have buddy-buddied Putin into setting up an all new facility for them somewhere in or east or the Urals.

That is 100% correct.  They should have moved the Fab as soon as they realized this was not going to be a short skirmish.

Ukrainian drone attacks set fire to three alcohol production facilities in two Russian regions, governors of Russian Tula and Tambov regions reported on October 22.

The governor confirmed that buildings at the Yefremovsky Alcohol Plant and the Lushkovsky Alcohol Plant in Suvorovsky District were “damaged” in the attacks.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene, and while fires broke out, the situation is said to be under control, with no casualties reported.

Associates of the Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, are removing equipment, metal, and by-products from the Illich Metallurgical Plant in occupied Mariupol, Ukraine.

The Illich Iron and Steel Works giant, unlike the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, largely survived Russia’s bombardment but is now being scavenged and fenced off by powerful Kremlin allies

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, the taxes generated by the Illich and Azovstal plants accounted for over one-third of Mariupol’s annual budget.

In March, Russian-backed authorities reported that 130,000 tons of iron byproducts, potentially worth $16 million, had been shipped from the Ilyich plant over the previous six months.

Metinvest, the plant’s former owner, stated that Russian-appointed authorities had also dismantled a production line valued at $220 million, which had been installed just before the war, and transported it to Russia.  .  .  .

ISW: Russians systematically execute Ukrainian prisoners of war and use chemical weapons

UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Oct 22 —  Russian troops have recently increased the number of systematic executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war with impunity and continue to use chemical weapons in violation of the Geneva Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Ukrainian officials reported on October 21 that Russian troops executed two unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war near Selydove, Donetsk region, on October 18 by shooting them, bound, at point-blank range.

On October 20, a Russian military blogger also posted a video and openly stated that Russian troops were using chlorpicrin (a pesticide that damages the lungs) against Ukrainian troops.

On May 1, the U.S. State Department announced that it had found that Russian troops were using chloropicrin and riot control agents (RCA) in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, signed by Russia.

Ukrainian radiation, chemical, and biological defense reconnaissance groups from the Support Forces Command have documented 4,035 cases of Russian troops using special munitions with hazardous chemicals since February 2023  .  .  .

Out For Revenge, Ukrainian Marines In Tanks And APCs Just Attacked The Russian Marines Who Executed Nine Ukrainian Prisoners

A battle for vengeance raged in the hamlet of Zelenyi Shlyakh.

On Oct. 10, Russian marines from the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade overran a team of Ukrainian drone operators in Zelenyi Shlyakh, a tiny hamlet in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast. The Russians stripped the Ukrainians, ordered them to lie face-down on the ground and then shot them, killing all nine.

A week later, Ukrainian marines from the 501st Marine Battalion counterattacked in Zelenyi Shlyakh—and meted out a measure of vengeance. A platoon of marines riding in several M-113 armored personnel carriers, led by a pair of T-64 tanks, thundered along the main north-south road threading past Zelenyi Shlyakh.

The T-64s popped smoke for cover and blazed away with their 125-millimeter guns, scoring a glancing blow on at least one Russian vehicle. A Ukrainian drone spotted five dead Russians. “This is just a small part of the enormous work they do every day!” the battalion wrote about its marines.

The 501st Marine Battalion isn’t the only Ukrainian unit that’s out for revenge in Kursk, which a strong Ukrainian force invaded on Aug. 6, quickly seizing a salient measuring several hundred square miles. Three elite Ukrainian brigades—the 82nd and 95th Air Assault Brigades and the 47th Mechanized Brigade—have also counterattacked the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade.

On Friday, the 95th Air Assault Brigade cornered a Russian marine platoon near Zelenyi Shlyakh and wrecked it with drones, tanks, missiles and mines—reportedly destroying three BTR wheeled armored personnel carriers and killing 30 Russians. “The teleportation of the enemy to Hell took place in a complex way,” the Ukrainian air assault branch boasted.  .  .  .
