Desperate Democrats Throw Money at Texas, Florida Senate Races

Bradley Jaye 26 Sep 2024

Democrats are rolling the dice in long shot races as Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) grows desperate to keep his slim majority.

Senate Democrats’ campaign arm is launching “a new multi-million dollar investment” in Texas, where Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) is challenging Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and in Florida, where former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is challenging Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL).

In a cycle where the map overwhelmingly advantages Republicans and numerous Democrat incumbents are scrambling to keep their seats, Cruz and Scott are seen as the only Republican incumbents running relatively competitive races.

In the high stakes game of Senate campaign spending allotment, nothing happens in a vacuum. Democrats’ new gambles come as Donald Trump’s performance at the top of the ticket and strong Republican candidates have rendered Schumer’s 51-49 majority more endangered than ever.

Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV), who caucuses with Democrats despite declaring himself an independent this year, is retiring, and his seat in ruby red West Virginia is certain to switch to the Republican column.

But in other states where Schumer held out hope, the red tides are turning.

In Montana, Sen. Jon Tester’s (D-MT) career-defying electoral odds in the red state appear to be heading towards an end. Tester is losing by seven points to Republican challenger Tim Sheehy, 50 to 43 percent, in a recent RMG research poll.

Just over five weeks ago, Tester led by five points in that same poll. That’s a 12-point swing towards Sheehy since August 14.

In Ohio, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), campaigning for a fourth term, has held onto power as Ohio has transitioned into a solidly Republican state. But Republican challenger Bernie Moreno likely has the advantage.

And in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania, where Vice President Kamala Harris’s support appears to have reached a hard ceiling, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) is running into trouble against big spending Republican challenger Dave McCormick.

Definitely not my favorite guy either.  With so many northerners that have invaded our state, I don't know what's going to happen election wise.

They're not desperate.  They have so much money that they are running out of races to spend it on.  It's amazing what $2 trillion in deficit spending does to fill DNC campaign coffers.  All thanks to stupid-ass chickenshit Republicans who keep passing continuing resolutions on Dem budgets year after year.

beto raised $38M against Cruz in 2018.  2 years later he raised $40M when he ran for Gov against Abbott.  Allred is at $38M currently.  Half of that $$$ is from out of state, which is despicable.

Two-thirds of that money comes from taxpayers in the form of government spending.  Beto got money from Planned Parenthood.  Planned Parenthood got money from the Federal government.  The federal government got money from taxing you.

Maybe one day, Republicans will realize this and put an end to all that spending.  Maybe they will decide to stop funding their enemies.

Well, they never quit asking. I get about ten Dem e-mails a day from the Harris/Walz bunch (not sure how I ended up on their list) and I opened a few just to see what was there. Every one of them had the tin cup out looking for a donation, but I nevr saw a single solid policy proposal.

I just hope generations of people conditioned to click "OK" when their 'puter sh*ts the bed (IT'S NOT OK!) don't go all zombie like and click them some money...

Great point!

If the Pubs lose the House they can thank the Establishment Loyalists in the party. The Pubs never fought for anything. If they fought and lost it would be a lot easier to support them than never fighting for fear of losing.

BTW, Scott and Cruz are not going to lose.

I think realizing this is one of the great things Trump has done. I don't think I'm all that different from most Pubs in that I used to think the "swamp" thing was way over blown. Then we elected a billionaire who wasn't beholding to anybody and saw not only Rats, but Pubs also, undercut him at every turn.
