Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul broke her silence on Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams' indictment on Thursday as she is faced with the decision on whether to use her power to oust him.

Following Adams' indictment on five criminal charges on Thursday, Hochul now has the power to remove him from office. Adams does not need to go to trial or be convicted for her to invoke this power.

"I have carefully reviewed the indictment released by the United States Department of Justice. This indictment is the latest in a disturbing pattern of events that has, understandably, contributed to a sense of unease among many New Yorkers," Hochul said in a statement.

Feds seize phone from Mayor Adams’ right-hand woman as she returns to US soil

Mayor Eric Adams’ chief adviser Ingrid Lewis-Martin was stopped at the airport by authorities Friday and had her phone seized as she arrived home from vacation in Japan, her lawyer and sources told The Post.

Officials with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office were waiting for the City Hall honcho when she got off the plane at Kennedy Airport in Queens to take her device — while federal prosecutors with the Southern District of New York slapped her with a subpoena while there, also, sources said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the federal subpoena was for.

New York Mayor Eric Adams returned to the federal courthouse in Manhattan Wednesday for a hearing in a sprawling corruption case that could send him to prison for decades if he's convicted – but the fiery former cop's defense is asking for the court to toss at least one charge and punish the government for leaks of confidential information.
 
Adams arrived in the courtroom a few minutes early, around 10:24 a.m., wearing a smile and a navy blue suit. He placed a hand on a supporter's shoulder before joining his lawyers at the defense table. He stared straight ahead as District Judge Dale Ho kicked off the hearing at 10:32.

Prosecutors said it is "quite likely" that additional charges will be filed – against additional defendants and possible in new cases. The investigation is ongoing, they said. But the defense scored a minor win, demanding the Justice Department file quick replies to motions filed earlier this week as the mayor is standing by his right to a speedy trial.

Second ‘co-conspirator’ in Mayor Adams’ federal bribery case to plead guilty in deal with prosecutors

Mohamed Bahi, 40, has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the government for allegedly skirting campaign finance laws during Adams’ initial run for office, according to the Friday filing in Manhattan federal court.

The feds say Bahi, the mayor’s liaison to the Muslim community, is expected to plead guilty as part of the deal that his defense team and feds have been hammering out for months — which could indicate he’ll cooperate in the case.

It was not known if the arrangement would have any effect on Bahi’s other criminal case from October that alleges he obstructed federal authorities.

His attorney did not return calls for comment.

Bahi will be the second person to plead out as part of the mayor’s bribery case following Turkish businessman Erden Arkan last month.

Arkan, the owner of KSK Construction, copped to a single count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and admitted to illegally donating to the Adams campaign.  ...

“We will not confess wrongdoing when there was none," they wrote in a joint letter. Ten attorneys have now left the Justice Department over the handling of the case.

Three federal prosecutors have chosen to resign instead of admitting wrongdoing following suspensions over their handling of the now-dropped federal corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, saying it is the Trump administration's handling of the case that was wrong, according to a letter seen by NBC News.

Celia Cohen, Andrew Rohrbach and Derek Wikstrom were assistant U.S. attorneys who were suspended after they refused to take part in the Department of Justice's move to drop the prosecution against Adams. A federal judge ordered the case permanently dropped last month so that the charges couldn't be used as "leverage" over Adams, who is cooperating with the Trump administration's immigration priorities.

The corruption case against Adams, who was elected as a Democrat but is now running for re-election as an independent, had sparked a crisis for the Justice Department in the early days of the Trump administration, leading to the biggest mass resignation of DOJ lawyers since the Watergate era.

The former acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle R. Sassoon, resigned over the move to drop the prosecution of Adams, as did several members of the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section. ...
