Mr. Schichter:
"This Is Not The America We Were Promised..."
Au contraire, Kurt.
It all goes back to what Thomas Jefferson dreamed and wrote into The Declaration so many years ago.
Words that sounded noble ... when reading them on paper, or saying them out loud.
But... did Mr. Jefferson realize the implications of what he wrote?
Was he making the same promise to Africans and muslims?
Did he intend that they be "equal" to the men (MEN, not women) standing around him when he presented the Declaration to the Continental Congress?
I don't believe that. Was he that blind to the realities of the world around him?
The hard truth is that we now ARE getting "the America" promised by Mr. Jefferson's platitudes.
And... we are discovering -- perhaps too late in our nation's history to save it -- that those words were nothing BUT "platitudes", with no basis in reality.
I prefer another saying someone unknown put together:
"Free people are not equal;
Equal people are NOT free".
Or, to steal a line from H.L. Mencken:
"Americans are getting the America Mr. Jefferson promised them -- good and hard..."
