Report: Top Democrats Say Joe Biden Will Exit Race as ‘Soon as This Weekend’

President Joe Biden will step aside as the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee as “soon as this weekend,” several top Democrats privately told Axios Thursday.

The Biden-Harris campaign immediately rejected the idea, telling Bloomberg that Biden will remain atop the ticket.

Nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to quit the race, an Associated Press/NORC poll found Wednesday.

“His choice is to be one of history’s heroes, or to be sure of the fact that there’ll never be a Biden presidential library,” one of Biden’s closest friends told Axios. “I pray that he does the right thing. He’s headed that way.”

Axios reported its conversations with top Democrats:

    Why it matters: The 81-year-old president, now self-isolating with COVID, remains publicly dug in. But privately he’s resigned to mounting pressure, bad polls, and untenable scrutiny making it impossible to continue his campaign, the Democrats tell us.

    Behind the scenes: The private message, distilled to its bluntest form: The top leaders of his party, his friends and key donors believe he can’t win, can’t change public perceptions of his age and acuity, and can’t deliver congressional majorities.

        The president is being told that if he stays in, former President Trump could win in a landslide and wipe away Biden’s legacy and Democrats’ hopes in November.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and three leading party bosses, are working to remove Biden from the ticket, according to media reports, but the president cannot be forced from the ticket. He could only be replaced on his own terms.

Biden said Tuesday he would reevaluate his candidacy for president if his doctors told him he had a medical issue. Biden’s comment is the first time he “opened the door to a theoretical medical condition forcing him from the presidential race,” according to Politico. Biden previously said that only the “Lord Almighty” could force him from the race.

There have been some here that speculate that he will do it tonight, to try and upstage rump's speech at the RNC.

If Biden were truly going along with his coup-plotters to resign quickly, would Schumer, Pelosi, etc be leaking to allied media like they are? Or would they be quietly stage-managing a dignified exit?

Just a few days ago the Trump assassination attempt supposedly ended all calls for Old Skeez to resign. Now his departure is imminent.

I'm not going to hop on the bandwagon of speculation and will just let it play out. There are many many ways yet this could twist and turn.

Yeah, it seems like Biden's people even today are putting out a very clear message that he's not going anywhere.

I think that's backwards. Biden is who they want to run against. Biden is in full meltdown mode. Being replaced is a big wild card.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) wrote a letter President Joe Biden asking him to hear out his Democratic supporters and colleagues about whether to suspend his reelection bid, arguing that there is “no shame in taking a well-deserved bow.”

The letter, which was sent to Biden over the Fourth of July weekend, makes references to baseball and Biden’s previous speeches as the Maryland Democrat seeks to persuade the president to engage in the “exercise of careful common sense.”

“As a great politician, you listen carefully to your fellow politicians and, most of all, you listen carefully to the people,” Raskin wrote in the letter, obtained by the Washington Examiner. “Common sense, Tom Paine taught us, is the sense we have in common when we speak and listen and rigorously reason together. Common sense is the sixth sense we acquire together in strong democracy. And it is through the exercise of careful common sense you can empower us again to have faith in our capacity to carry on the great work you have begun.”

Raskin’s pleas are the latest to join those of a handful of Democrats expressing concerns over whether Biden is a strong enough candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump.

“I am not writing to presume to tell you what to do, Mr. President, because that is up to you and Jill and your family entirely,” Raskin added. “You will be the best judge of that. But I am writing to remind you of who you are. As a truly great and magnificent leader, you belong to all of us. Sometimes it will be hard for you to perceive, much less fully comprehend, the substance and character of your own greatness.”

Raskin reminded Biden of his 2020 campaign speeches and his January speech at Valley Forge that spoke about vows to America, “not a vow to one party, much less to one person.”

Perhaps I was on to something because Biden's handlers responded with a vengeance on Thursday. As RedState reported, a senior administration official rebutted claims that the president was close to bowing out, stating that he could start campaigning again as soon as next week.

White House coffee boy Andrew Bates also lashed out publicly in no uncertain terms.

I doubt he has COVID.  There has to be some sort of an excuse for him to step down.  Complications of COVID would be my guess.

The fact that the DEM convention is weeks away and with a failed assassination attempt -- his time as president has just about ended. 

I still don't think Kamel is going to get the nod.  Yes it would be the easiest way, but she's not a very strong ticket.  The speculations are numerous.

It's now a wait and see, but Joe is finished.
