The higher the resolution the photo, the faster it needs to be captured so that movement doesn't smear reducing the resolution. Modern cameras are fast. An iPhone has the capability of doing 1/2000 shutter speed with its tiny camera. A larger aperture higher resolution high end camera would be expected to go faster.

I'm no expert by any means. I have several cameras capable of 1/1000 shutter speed (one that will do 1/2000) I have NEVER used those settings for anything other than sporting events (Nascar) or aircraft in flight. Shooting at very high shutter speeds means you have chosen to give up lots of other things. At least that was once true. If that is no longer true, I just learned something.

Photographer Doug Mills on capturing bullet during Trump's rally assassination attempt

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Doug Mills had his finger on the shutter when a gunman opened fire during former President Donald Trump's rally on Saturday.

Mills, who was covering the rally for the New York Times, initially thought the noise came from a vehicle, but he quickly realized it was something much more serious.

"When I saw him kind of grimace and look to his right and then grab his ear, and looked at it, I thought, and then he went down. I was like, 'Oh my gosh, he's been shot'," said Mills.

Mills has covered presidents since 1983 but never envisioned he would be witnessing an assassination attempt.

According to law enforcement officials, the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, shot into the rally the former president was holding and fired six to eight rounds with an AR-style weapon. A Secret Service sniper quickly shot and killed him. Armed agents immediately whisked Trump off the stage, blood running down the side of his face.

One audience member, Pennsylvania firefighter Corey Comperatore, was killed in the shooting, and two other men are in critical condition.

Despite the chaos, Mills kept taking photos with his Sony camera, which shoots 30 frames per second.

"When he was ushered off the stage, I thought that was going to be the picture that, you know, he was bloodied ear, gave that fist pump. And I thought, you know, as I'm looking back at my camera, I'm sending pictures directly to The New York Times from my camera," said Mills.

Hmmm. I See BS.

'...had his finger on the shutter when the gunman opened fire'... That bullet is supersonic. By the time the sound gets there, the bullet is long gone...and that isn't allowing for reaction time. So was it planning, or luck?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...shot into the rally..."
'Targeted the (former) president' might be more accurate, no?
All the others wounded and the one man killed were on the same general target track. This wasn't random, there was one apparent target.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...fired six to eight rounds..."

Well, how many was it? The event was recorded. Expended brass should be at the crime scene. Bullets should be found and ballistically checked as to origin.

Please, people quit muddying the water.

The camera takes 30 fps and so it is essentially filming the event while active. It may well take a minimum sequence of photos with one rapid click too. It wasn't just a single photo at a time camera.

Secret Service Director Flunked Key Question on Trump Shooting: Ted Cruz

josette caruso
@josettecaruso

Many people are calling for her resignation!

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was unable to answer an important question about the gunman who opened fire on former president Donald Trump, according to Senator Ted Cruz. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot at Trump from a rooftop near a rally where he was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. One rallygoer was killed and two others were seriously wounded before Crooks was fatally shot by the Secret Service. Trump suffered an ear injury, but avoided being seriously hurt.

In the days since, the Secret Service has faced scrutiny about how it allowed a gunman to get so close to Trump. Multiple investigations are underway, both into the shooting and how law enforcement allowed it to occur.

Calls for Cheatle to resign have intensified, with Republican leaders from both the House and the Senate saying she should step down. Cheatle has said she has no intention of resigning. Cruz, who is among the Republican lawmakers calling for Cheatle's resignation, said she was unable to explain how Crooks had gotten onto the rooftop from where he opened fire, during a briefing with senators on Wednesday. CONTENT
"They asked the head of the Secret Service: how did the guy get to the top of the building?" Cruz said on his podcast. "She said, 'Well, I don't know.' The hell do you mean you don't know? This was four days ago, five days ago and you don't know how he got up to the building? Is there a more important question that you're dealing with?"

Cheatle should "be fired yesterday," Cruz said. "It was the most spectacular failure."Cruz's office has been contacted for further comment via email.

Cheadle?

It's hard  remember a more high profile "one time" failure event in the history of our government.

This is not only malfeasance, but an epic failure on so many levels.  You'd think she'd resigned just to avoid more utter embarsssment

:yowsa: and they can be equipped to electronically transmit photos instantly but none of that explains the need for ultra high shutter speeds at an event like this. Perhaps I need to take a course in modern digital photography.

OK! Not disputing your math, lets make it 1/2000 of a second. The same question applies. @Hoodat

Then expand to 12-16 inches, which is close to what the photo shows.  Sure, it is likely.  But is it unusual?  I would like to see the rest of what the photographer shot.  Is this the only moment in the day where he was clicking away trying to get a photo of a bullet?  Or is this his normal way of photographing everything?

I'd seen a lot of chatter about the woman behind Trump who seemed to duck down even before the bullet whizzed by, and then acted so strangely, calmly taking photos or video of what was happening while Trump was down on the ground. I hadn't heard she was identified as yet another of the DEI hires at USSS. What a cluster.

Where was it reported that an ultra high speed shutter was used?  The ideal shutter speed is typically twice the frame rate.

The photograph did not capture the bullet. It only captured a small amount of the atmosphere affected by the bullet.

ALARMING NEW DETAILS AROUND THE BUILDING USED BY THE SHOOTER TO ALMOST ASSASSINATE  PRESIDENT TRUMP!

WHY IS THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE BUILDING NOT TALKING? AND WHY HAVE THEY NOT RELEASED A STATEMENT?

AGR International, the building Thomas Matthew Crooks shot from, was just sold in March to a Clayton, Dubilier and Rice (CD&R) @CDRBuilds

It is worth noting that Joseph L. Rice III is the Founder of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. Rice is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and he is also a member of the Brookings Institution, the same Brookings institute @BrookingsInst

True, but taking photos of a guy standing at a lectern delivering a speech isn't generally considered "high speed" or "action" photography. I'm a low-level amateur photographer and used to take photos to accompany the stories I covered as a newspaper reporter, and I can't imagine using a shutter speed that fast for a picture of a man standing still. It's curious, even if there isn't anything particularly conspiratorial about it.

@Bigun

My post had no intent to challenge you regarding shutter speeds, etc..

It was simply my understanding that virtually all hand-held digital cameras with interchangeable lenses are also capable of shooting VIDEO as well as still shots or sequence-action shots.

And today, as you examine streaming video frame by frame, you are capable of converting any frame to a "still" shot.

Thus, IMO, that explains why the photographer was able to catch the frame as the bullet whizzed by Pres. Trump's head.

If I'm not right in that assertion, I apologize.

Investment Firm That Allegedly “Put Options” on 12 Million Trump Stocks Day Before Assassination Attempt Blames Filing Error — Rothschild, BlackRock, Vanguard, Meta, George Bush, and Cheney Family Among Top Investors
by Jim Hᴏft Jul. 18, 2024 12:40 pm
Gateway Pundit

Austin Private Wealth, LLC, a Texas-based financial planning company, is being scrutinized after a social media post went viral that claimed they had put options on as many as 12 million shares of DJT shares just one day before the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The investment firm denied the allegations and has now blamed a filing error for this controversial action.

According to CA Club India:
Quote
A Put Option is an investment made by someone who expects a company’s Stock Price to fall. People who engage in Inside Trading buy Put Options can make 5X or, sometimes even 100X profits (depends on how quickly the stock plummets).

If Trump did die in the assassination attempt, his company would have become worthless. It’s stock would have become Zero in a day. The people who bought Put Options would have made billions in profits.
... The firm released the following statement:
Quote
The SEC filing which showed that Austin Private Wealth shorted a large number of shares of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp (DJT) was incorrect and we immediately amended it as soon as we learned of the error.

No client of APW holds, or has ever held, a put on DJT in the quantity initially reported. The correct holding amount was 12 contracts, or 1,200 shares — not 12 million shares, as was filed in error. In submitting the required report for the second quarter of 2024, a multiplier was applied by a third-party vendor that increased the number of the shares by a multiple of 10,000 for all options contracts (not just DJT). We did not catch the error before approving the filing.
... Social media users also scrutinized Austin Private Wealth’s investors. The latest 13F filings reveal a list of top investors, including influential globalists such as The Rothschild Family, BlackRock, Vanguard, and Meta, as well as prominent political families like the Bushes and the Cheneys.
People also noted that BlackRock filmed some sort of ad at Bethel Park High School a few years ago, and young Crooks was one of the students appearing - albeit briefly - in the ad. That's a heck of a coincidence, but I'm not alleging it's anything but a coincidence. At least for now.
