GOP thinks it has found winning argument for Trump
by Amie Parnes - 06/09/24 6:00 AM ET

Republicans have a new twist on the slogan, “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”

Their argument now: Were you better off under former President Trump than you are under President Biden?

Republicans argue the economy — particularly inflation — was better under Trump than it is under Biden. And they say Trump had a better handle on foreign policy, pointing to the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. They also maintain the border was more secure under the former president.

It’s an assertion that even Democrats acknowledge could be a problem for Biden as he heads into a pivotal stretch of the campaign season against Trump. And it’s a line of reasoning Democrats expect the former president to highlight when he faces off with Biden later this month when the two share a debate stage.

“If I were advising Trump, I’d say exactly that,” one longtime Democratic strategist said, echoing the line of, “Were you better off under President Trump?” “These are the issues voters care about and we’re losing the debate on each one, even if we don’t want to admit it.”

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

lol

Four years ago, the economy was shut down, the stock market lost pretty much everything that it gained since 2017 and people were losing their livelihoods

Why don’t they go with “is the border more secure than it was four years ago?”

If they use the economic argument, it leaves an opening for the Democrats.

How about “are you better off now than you were in 2018?”

I know people who were devastated by the great pause. They don't think they are worse off now than then.

There is little doubt, in fact no doubt at least in my mind that we were indeed better off under Trump then Joe.  The problem is obvious; very few Trump policies stuck and were rescinded by Joe. Bandaids and e.o.'s only work for awhile.  Thinking that the GOP will miraculously get their schlitz together under Trump is very questionable along with them having  his back and working with him instead of against him.  The GOPe, swamp and the DEM creatures are still plentiful. I don't see that changing unless people start voting them out when they have a chance.

It IS crucial to vote down ballot.

You Trumpers are very busy chasing votes with slogans that mean nothing.  YOU are all Guilty of chasing and fixing symptoms of the problem, never addressing the root cause.  You're as delusional as ever.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Winning argument, or at least strategy needs to be keeping his trap shut of silly insults.  His conviction has done a nice job of coalescing the "nose holders".  He now needs to now try to ride that sympathy, and not needlessly piss people off.

(sigh...)

Actually, YES, I AM "better off".

Every time this question has been asked in the past by the Pubbies, it's been the same answer.

Example:
In 2020, I had reportable interest income of 1,062.
In 2024, I'm expecting to reel in over $11,000 in interest, courtesy of the U.S. government (treasury bills).
TEN TIMES as much.

Example:
My RR retirement pay is $6,800 higher now, for the entire year, than it was in 2020. And will increase again in 2025.

So... if I were to strictly "vote my pocketbook", how would you expect me to vote?
But having said that...
No.
I DO NOT "vote my pocketbook".

Once more:
"It's NOT the economy, stupid...!"

There are other things more important.
If they weren't important, this forum wouldn't exist.
