It's just a matter of time before they fine him again or sentence him to jail time -- then he'll appeal.

Juror to Trump lawyer: 'He's targeted some females'
By Kyle Schnitzer

Earlier today, Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, was questioning the prospective jurors when one member of the jury pool said that Trump "targeted some females."

"I'm a female, he's targeted some females, so I would say some of my friends have strong opinions on him," the female juror said.

She then said: "I know there have been opinions that he doesn’t treat females correctly.”

However, the juror added that she could remain impartial and didn't know the facts of the case.

Potential juror says if Trump doesn't testify, it doesn't mean he's guilty
By Priscilla DeGregory

One potential juror said that no one should hold it against Donald Trump if he chooses not to testify at trial.

“If he decides not to speak," the impassioned woman said, waving her hands, "that’s your right, you can’t presume that makes him guilty."

“It’s really, the prosecutor’s the one that has to present those facts and prove them, but as I said, he has the right not to say them," the older, white-haired woman said.

“I don’t think I could have said it better myself," Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche responded during questioning of 18 potential jurors.

Trump has said he plans to testify in his own defense. But the judge will eventually instruct the jurors that they cannot hold it against Trump if he chooses not to take the witness stand.

'He speaks his mind' and other things some prospective jurors think of Trump
By Priscilla DeGregory and Ben Kochman

Two potential jurors said they admired that Donald Trump speaks his mind and that you never have to guess where he stands.

"I mean, he speaks his mind, come on, what can you say about that? If I told you all the time what I thought about people — I want to say some things to people, but my mama said be nice," one woman told Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche during questioning of a pool of prospective jurors.

Another woman said that while she tries to avoid politics, she appreciates that "President Trump speaks his mind and I’d rather that than someone who's in office who you don’t know what they’re thinking."

Another woman, a 50-year Big Apple resident, said she couldn't deny that Trump left his mark on the city's real estate landscape.

Still, she said, "There is very little we probably agree on policy-wise."

"Sometimes I get frustrated with it like anybody does," the woman admitted. "I have family members that support him. We manage to have decent conversations about that."

Trump lawyer probes potential jurors' feelings about former prez, political leanings
By Priscilla DeGregory

Donald Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche attempted to probe potential jurors on their political leanings and feelings about the former president in a series of questions to a group of 18.

One man said he doesn't follow politics because his "wife does not like the news" and added he has "stronger opinions about local stuff."

Blanche asked a Mexican-born American man whether his experience becoming a US citizen would color his work if seated as a juror.

"Feelings are not facts," the man hedged. "I'm very grateful to be an American and that happened on the first year that he was president."

Blanche and another man went back and forth as the lawyer tried to glean his political leanings while the man tried to dodge.

“I’ll say I’m a Democrat, so there you go, but I walk in there and he’s a defendant and that’s all he is," said the man.

One man said he's been following Trump news and added, "I was a big fan of 'The Apprentice' when I was in middle school," to laughs from the courtroom.

As for Trump's time in the White House, "Some things I agreed with, some things I disagreed with," he said.

Bragg threatens 30 days of jail time in Trump contempt of court motion
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called on Judge Juan Merchan to threaten former President Trump with 30 days in jail as part of his contempt of court motion on Tuesday.

Bragg is urging Manhattan Judge Merchan to warn Trump that "future violations" of the gag order against him can be punished "not only with additional fines, but also with a term of incarceration of up to thirty days."

Merchan last month imposed a gag order on Trump, due to his "prior extrajudicial statements." Merchan said they established "a sufficient risk to the administration of justice."

Merchan ordered that Trump cannot make or direct others to make public statements about witnesses concerning their potential participation or about counsel in the case — other than Bragg — or about court staff, DA staff or family members of staff.

Merchan also ordered that Trump cannot make or direct others to make public statements about any prospective juror or chosen juror.

During the first day of the criminal trial and start of jury selection, Manhattan prosecutors suggested Trump had violated the order on three separate occasions on social media. Prosecutors said Trump should be fined $3,000 for the three alleged violations of the gag order — $1,000 for each violation.

Judge accuses Trump of trying to intimidate juror called to clarify 'anti-Trump' posts
By kschnitzernyp

Donald Trump was accused by Justice Juan Merchan of intimidating a juror who was called in to clarify his attorney's claims of alleged "anti-Trump" Facebook posts.

The judge told Trump's attorney Todd Blanche that Trump was uttering something to the juror who was "12 feet away from your client."

"Your client was audibly uttering something," the judge said, "I don't know what he was uttering..."

He then offered a stiff warning: "I won’t tolerate that. I won’t have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom. I will be crystal clear."

The flareup came after Blanche challenged Juror No. 1 for cause because he claimed that the woman had made two Facebook posts on the day of the 2020 presidential election, when "President Trump lost the election."

The juror had previously said they did not have any biases against Trump, Blanche said.

Another Trump attorney, Susan Necheles, said the post was of a "clearly anti-Trump event."

“This is clearly an anti-Trump event that she’s out celebrating and partying at," Necheles said.

I understand that Trump's personality is to fight back and right wrongs, but he's facing jail time if he is found in contempt. At that point IMHO they'll lock him up and they'll keep him locked up as long as they can.  He'd be best to keep his composure and remain silent.

I believe part of him thinks his base would start rioting and prove that they're making a mistake throwing charges at him -- I think his base would remain silent.

Trump's side wins a bid to have a potential juror dismissed for 'anti-Trump' post
By Priscilla DeGregory and Kyle Schnitzer

Judge Juan Merchan approved Trump lawyer Todd Blanche's request to have a potential juror tossed out of the jury pool over allegedly anti-Trump posts.

The juror posted in 2017 on Facebook: "Good news!! Trump lost his court battle on his unlawful travel ban!!!”

Merchan said if the post had ended there he might not have granted Blanche's bid but it went on to say: "Get him out, lock him up."

"This is a person who has expressed the desire…that Mr. Trump be locked up," Merchan said, noting that Trump faces potential time behind bars if convicted at trial.

Sure she can. /s I am so glad that I can't be part of that jury. It will turn into a bigger circus than OJ.

Best wishes and prayers for you Pres. Trump. I fear the outcome.

Here's what we know so far about the 6 jurors selected for Trump's hush money trial
By Kyle Schnitzer

Here are some small nuggets on the six jurors that have been selected for Donald Trump's hush money trial.

The foreperson -- or leader of the jury -- is married, lives in West Harlem, works in sales and is originally from Ireland.

Another juror is a young black woman who has friends with opinions about Trump, but said she’s not a political person. She said that she respected that Trump "always speaks his mind."

An Oregon native who works as a corporate lawyer at Gunderson Dettmer. He said they enjoy hiking and running. He has lived in Chelsea for five years.

A female software engineer who lives in Chelsea.

A 40-year-old, Lower East Side resident who said he found Trump "fascinating and mysterious."
"He walks into a room and he sets people off one way or another," the juror said, who works as an IT consultant. "I find that really interesting. Really, this one guy can do all of this. Wow, that’s what I think."

A female oncology nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering who lives on the Upper East Side.

Twelve people, along with a few alternates, will eventually be selected to serve on the jury.

Jury selection has resumed with a fresh panel of jurors to fill in the remaining seats.

Wednesday reprieve: Why Trump will get a midweek break from his hush money trial

Former President Donald Trump will not be in court in Manhattan on Wednesday or subsequent Wednesdays for his hush money trial.

The trial will not have proceedings scheduled on Wednesdays to allow Judge Juan Merchan to deal with other court proceedings he has outside of the hush money trial. The procedure to mark one day of the week to take off from proceedings in a trial is common practice.

Wednesday reprieve: Why Trump will get a midweek break from his hush money trial

.

While Wednesdays are not expected to have any proceedings related to the hush money trial, the judge said he will not hold any sessions in court unless there are significant delays in the trial, which is expected to last six weeks.

Trump, who is required to be in court throughout the criminal trial, may use the off days in the middle of the week to his advantage as he campaigns for a second term in the White House. Trump lawyer Todd Blanche told the judge on Monday that the former president’s campaign has “taken pains” to put events on Wednesdays to accommodate the trial schedule, according to Politico.

Bragg wants to cross-examine Trump on civil cases in hush money trial
by Zach Schonfeld and Ella Lee - 04/17/24 3:57 PM ET

If former President Trump chooses to testify in his hush money trial, New York prosecutors want to cross-examine him about his various civil lawsuits.

In court papers signed last month but not made public until Wednesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) office said it would seek to question Trump about 13 court rulings against him or his businesses to impeach his credibility.

The list runs the gamut of Trump’s recent civil cases, referencing his recent business fraud trial that ended in a nearly half-billion-dollar payout, gag order violations and jury verdicts. Trump’s lawyers have indicated they oppose prosecutors’ request.

Trump has signaled an openness to testifying in his hush money trial, which unlike those past civil lawsuits is a criminal case.

But doing so would mark a rare step for a criminal defendant. Prosecutors cannot force him to testify, and each selected juror has committed to the judge that they won’t hold it against Trump if he doesn’t.

Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial, will hold a hearing later this week to determine the proper scope of prosecutors’ cross-examination of Trump. Known as a Sandoval hearing, the ruling is designed to help Trump’s legal team make an informed decision about whether to have him testify.

In the newly public court papers, Bragg said he wants to raise the $354 million penalty Trump was ordered to pay after a New York judge found he conspired to alter his net worth for tax and insurance benefits, writing Trump “repeatedly and persistently” falsified business records, issued false financial statements and conspired to commit insurance fraud.

The Manhattan district attorney also intends to highlight Trump’s violations of a gag order in that case, which barred him from publicly talking about any court staff. The former president racked up $15,000 in fines for skirting the judge’s directive, and when Trump was asked to take the stand to explain himself, the judge determined that his testimony “rings hollow and untrue.”

Prosecutors said they would also seek to question Trump about the jury’s verdicts in two lawsuits brought by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll. One jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s, and a subsequent jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million for defaming her by denying her story when she came forward.

Here I am being blonde again! I didn't think you could bring prior convictions into an unrelated trial?

I was unfortunate to be a juror on a teenage murder trial. After the trial we learned of prior convictions/arrests that could very well have swayed the sentencing.

You can if you have a chance to Cross-Examine.  I saw it happen when I was a Juror.  We did not know anything about the prior drug raps until the Defendant took the stand and the Prosecutor asked about it in the Cross Exam.

Interesting. The defendant didn't take the stand during the trial I was an unhappy juror on. Or maybe the prosecutor was inept.

It's totally up to the Defense, whether or not the Defendant testifies.  It's possible this guy's Attorney was surprised about the priors.

Michael Cohen, witness in Trump’s trial, goes on media blitz amid credibility questions
By
Ashley Oliver
April 18, 2024 6:00 am
.

Michael Cohen, a key witness in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s hush money case against former President Donald Trump, has become increasingly vocal ahead of his anticipated testimony in the trial.

Cohen has participated in a string of recent media interviews in which he acknowledges that Trump’s defense team will attempt to undermine his credibility during the trial, including by showcasing Cohen’s felony convictions and incentives Cohen may have to lie about Trump.

His media blitz comes as Trump’s defense attorneys signal they plan to paint Cohen as an unreliable witness during the trial.

“One of the things that Donald and his legal team are trying to do is every day it’s to discredit me, and they think that that’s a winning strategy for getting an overturn of whatever conviction that the jury may or may not determine,” Cohen said in a television interview over the weekend. “That’s not the way that you run a trial. Have your own defense.”

Cohen added that the media’s portrayal of him as a “key witness” was not accurate and claimed that he was merely “the narrator of the story.”

Trump trial: Prosecutors unveil plans to cross-examine Trump in hush money case
By
Kaelan Deese
April 17, 2024 4:44 pm
.

Prosecutors in the New York criminal hush money case against Donald Trump filed a notice Wednesday outlining their plans to question the former president about his previous civil trials to undermine his credibility.

The so-called Sandoval notice by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg includes “facts” pertaining to the civil fraud trial against the Trump Organization brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), and the two “sexual abuse” defamation lawsuits brought against him by writer E. Jean Carroll.

“If the defendant chooses to testify, the People intend to inquire regarding the following,” Bragg’s office wrote in a filing dated March 10, which became public on Wednesday.

Bragg, an elected Democrat, has charged Trump with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records for what prosecutors say was the illegal concealment of payments to hide an alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels. He began the list by noting Trump, on Feb. 16, was ordered to pay upwards of $354 million in a civil fraud case for “repeatedly and persistently falsifying business records” and “misstating the value of his assets for economic benefit.”

NYC nurse excused from jury after saying she cannot be 'fair and unbiased'
By Ben Kochman

An Upper East Side nurse who had been "Juror No. 2" has been excused after saying she could not be "fair."
“Yesterday alone, I had friends, colleagues, and family push things to my phone, questioning my identity as a juror. I don’t think at this point I can be fair and unbiased," the nurse said.

Justice Juan Merchan then dismissed her.

Judge redacts two questions from juror questionnaire
By Kyle Schnitzer

Justice Merchan said he will redact two questions from the juror questionnaire after prosecutors said that certain questions could out the identity of jurors.

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass suggested the prospective jurors could not answer questions about their current and former employers, which he said can make them easily identified.

Trump's attorneys, Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles, objected to not getting that information

Prosecutors accuse Trump of violating gag order 7 more times: 'It's ridiculous'
By Ben Kochman

The DA's office slammed Trump Thursday for allegedly breaching a court order that bars him from disparaging jurors and witnesses in the case "seven more times" in the past few days, calling it "ridiculous."

Trump's most "disturbing post" — in light of a juror reporting Thursday morning that she was intimidated by media attention on the case — came last night, prosecutor Chris Conroy said.

Trump had re-posted a quote, from Fox News host Jesse Watters, which said "they are catching undercover liberal activists lying to the judge” in order to get on the Trump jury.

Trump's lawyer Emil Bove claimed Trump did not make any "willful violations" of the judge's gag order, which has some "ambiguities."

Conroy said the posts clearly flout the order and asked Justice Merchan to hold Trump in contempt of court, which could lead to fines and theoretically jail time of up to 30 days.

"It's ridiculous. It has to stop," Conroy said.

Trump lawyers fume as judge no longer requires jurors to reveal where they work
By Kyle Schnitzer

Justice Juan Merchan said he will redact two questions from the juror questionnaire after prosecutors said that certain questions could reveal the identity of jurors.

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass suggested the prospective jurors could not answer questions about their current and former employers, which he said can make them easily identifiable.

Donald Trump's attorneys, Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles, objected to not getting that information. They'll get it now, but it will be redacted in the court transcript.
