White House grapples with internal divisions on Israel-Gaza

The Hamas attacks and Israeli reaction have roiled the Biden team like no other issue during his presidency

Earlier this month, a group of about 20 distressed White House staffers requested a meeting with President Biden’s top advisers, as Israel’s war in Gaza entered its sixth week.

The diverse group of staffers had three main issues they wanted to discuss with White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, senior adviser Anita Dunn and deputy national security adviser Jon Finer: They wanted to know the administration’s strategy for curbing the number of civilian deaths, the message it plans to send on the conflict and its postwar vision for the region.

Zients, Dunn and Finer listened respectfully, but some participants felt they fell back on familiar talking points, said a White House official familiar with the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a private exchange. The administration had to be careful not to criticize Israel in public so it could influence its leaders in private, the advisers said. U.S. officials were pushing Israel to minimize civilian casualties. And the president and his top aides were advocating for a two-state solution once the conflict was over.

The previously unreported meeting of officials underscores how Biden’s handling of what is arguably the biggest foreign policy crisis of his presidency is dividing a White House that has prided itself on running a disciplined and united operation. The Israel-Gaza war has roiled the administration more than any other issue in Biden’s first three years in office, according to numerous aides and allies inside and outside the White House, as staffers agonize over their positions on highly emotional issues.

Report: Negotiators in Qatar Have Divided Hostages into Groups, Like Cattle

Negotiators in Doha, Qatar, over the release of further groups of Israeli hostages have divided them into groups and categories — like cattle, much as Nazis divided Jews into different groups at concentration camps and death camps in the Second World War.

This humiliating exercise, itself a public relations victory for Hamas, will enable the terror organization to demand different prices for each group — far more than the three Palestinian terror convicts for every woman and child in the first six exchanges.

The result is a process that looks more like bartering over goods in a Middle Eastern bazaar than a discussion about human beings — all of whom were kidnapped in a terror attack, and all of whom are being held in violation of international law, without Red Cross visits.

The description of negotiations between Hamas, Qatar, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Israeli Mossad was published by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius on Tuesday evening.

Ignatius wrote:

    The negotiators agreed on five categories of Israeli hostages for future releases, the knowledgeable source said. The five groups are: men too old for reserve military duty, female soldiers, male reservists, active-duty male soldiers, and the bodies of Israelis who died before or during captivity. The total is well over 100, but the source said he couldn’t provide a precise number as yet.

    Hamas has expressed “willingness to negotiate on all five categories,” the source said. He added that parameters of the exchange — such as how many Gaza captives would be freed each day, how many Palestinian prisoners would be exchanged for each Israeli, and how much humanitarian assistance would be sent into Gaza — haven’t been worked out.

Turkish President Erdogan calls Israel PM Netanyahu the 'butcher of Gaza'

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan , who has been a vocal critic of Israel since the war against Hamas started, is now calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the “butcher of Gaza.”

Erdogan on Wednesday also reiterated that his government would ensure that Israel is held accountable for its military actions before international courts, accusing Netanyahu of committing “one of the worst atrocities” of the century, according to the Associated Press.

“With the murders he committed in Gaza, Netanyahu is firing up antisemitism and endangering the security of the people of Israel and of all Jewish people,” Erdogan reportedly said. “Immigrants living in [Western] countries are paying the price for the irresponsible rhetoric of Western leaders that demonize Palestinians.”

Turkey in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 had denounced the violence and condemned deaths caused by the group, but as Israel rolled out its response, Erdogan shifted his support and started to refer to Hamas as "freedom fighters." 

Israel’s Foreign Ministry previously has said that "Erdogan’s attempt to defend a terrorist organization and his inflammatory statements won’t change the horrors seen by the world that proves Hamas is ISIS."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday has called for an international conference to resolve the Israel-Hamas war.

He said Palestinians are ready to work with the international community on a “serious political process” that leads to an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war, according to the Associated Press.

He also again called for a halt to the war in Gaza.

Abbas’ Palestinian Authority administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Hamas drove his forces out of Gaza when it seized power there in 2007.

The war between Israel and Hamas, which began on Oct. 7 following a surprise terrorist attack in southern Israel, is now in its 53rd day.

Hamas, Israel consider new Gaza truce parameters including release of men: report
By Reuters

Israel and Hamas were on Wednesday considering the parameters of a potential new phase of the Gaza truce deal that includes Hamas releasing hostages who are men or military personnel, not only women and children, a source briefed on the negotiations said.

The leaders of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israel’s Mossad met Qatar’s prime minister in Doha on Tuesday to discuss the possible new phase and what might be needed to reach a ceasefire lasting more than a handful of days, the source told Reuters.

Qatari negotiators had met Hamas officials ahead of the meeting to gauge their willingness to agree to the new parameters.

The outcome of the discussion between Qatar and Hamas was unclear.

CIA Director William Burns was in Doha “for meetings on the Israel-Hamas conflict including discussions on hostages”, a US official said on condition of anonymity. The official did not elaborate.

This is all right on schedule. It is a part of a tired old plan which has played out dozens of times. Arabs commit an atrocity against Israeli civilians. Israel retaliates. Arabs call for immediate temporary ceasefire, often while still attacking Israel. The U.N. and International groups side with the Arabs. Eventually Israel agrees to a ceasefire. Arabs immediately call for a cessation of hostilities, often while still attacking Israel. International negotiators get involved and side with the Arabs as they always do.

The ceasefire leads to a loss of momentum and will by Israel. This ends the initiative. Everything settles down into status quo and the Arabs get away with it. Arabs 'win' and claim victory. Which only emboldens the terrorists to do it again, and again, and again after that.

It is like watching a rerun for the tenth time. No doubt Abbas will promise peace forever and sign another bullshit 'treaty' which will be discarded before the ink dries. No doubt international groups and the U.N. will promise "monitoring" which always amounts to nothing at all since the monitors support the Arab cause. In many cases the so-called 'international monitors' are complicit with the Arabs and aid in preparing them for the next battle with weapons and munitions.

However, I hope this time will be different. I believe Hamas went way too far this time for the standard playbook to apply.

Red Cross officials have not yet been allowed to visit hostages that Hamas is holding in Gaza, in violation of an agreement struck between Israel and Hamas which stipulated that the Red Cross would be able to visit the hostages by the end of the fourth day of the truce.  (CNN)

Netanyahu vows war will continue after truce expires, says Israel will fight 'until the end'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip would resume after the expiration of the truce in a video statement.

"From the start of the war I set three goals," Netanyahu said, "Eliminating Hamas, returning all of our hostages, and ensuring that Gaza will never again go back to being a threat to the State of Israel. These three goals still stand."

Netanyahu went on to say he had been asked if Israel would resume its war effort against Hamas after this stage of hostage returns has been completed.

"There is no situation in which we do not go back fighting until the end," the Israeli PM declared.

Netanyahu said that the war enjoyed the support of his entire government, the military, and the Israeli people.

The youngest Israeli hostage held by Hamas, his 4-year-old brother and their mom were killed by Israeli bombing on the Gaza Strip, the terror group’s military arm said Wednesday without evidence.

Israel said it’s looking into the Al Qassam Brigades Telegram announcement about the deaths of 10-month-old Kfir Bibas, 4-year-old Ariel, and 23-year-old Shiri Silverman-Bibas.

“The terrorist organization Hamas continues to act in a cruel and inhuman manner,” the IDF said in a statement.

“IDF representatives spoke with the members of the Bibas family, informed them of the claim, and are accompanying them at this time. The IDF is examining the reliability of the information.”

“The responsibility for the safety of all the hostages in the Gaza Strip rests fully with the terrorist organization Hamas. Hamas endangers the hostages, including nine children. Hamas is required to immediately return them to Israel,” the statement continued.

The three had been abducted along with patriarch Yarden from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on Oct. 7, and the redheaded photogenic youngsters, known affectionately as “The Reds,” had become something of a symbol of the terror attack’s brutality.

On Tuesday, Israeli officials announced that Hamas had handed the family over to another Palestinian faction and said they were being held in Khan Younis, a city in the southern Gaza Strip.

Despite repeated pleas from extended relatives and IDF officials alike, the Bibas family was not on the list of hostages expected to be released Wednesday, according to CNN.

Hamas has released more than 80 of its some 240 hostages since a temporary truce was brokered last week.

Israeli hostage's mother slams 'Uber service' Red Cross, blasts agency for not visiting captives

Israeli hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin's mother, Rachel Goldberg slammed the Red Cross for failing to visit the captives in a press conference, the Times of Israel reports.

Goldberg's son had his arm blown off during the Hamas massacre of the Supernova rave on October 7 before being kidnapped by Hamas terrorists.

Goldberg said that she believes her son was treated in a Gaza hospital after he was abducted since the terrorists believed the hostages were worth more alive than dead.

However, Goldberg-Polin would require antibiotics post-surgery and its an open question whether he is receiving proper medical treatment.

Goldberg blasted the Red Cross for not visiting and providing medical care to the captives, saying the agency is nothing more than an "Uber service” for released hostages.

Israeli hostages reunite with families in heartwarming photos

Heartwarming photos of newly released Israeli hostages reuniting with their families have emerged.

Many photos showed the families in tears, hugging their loved ones following their captivity as Hamas hostages.

So far, Hamas has released 80 of the presumed 240 hostages.

Out of the 61 Israelis released so far, the majority have been women and children. The remainder of the hostages have mostly been foreign workers or foreign citizens.

It is assumed that there are 160 hostages still held by Hamas, 100 of them Israelis.

A fifth release of hostages is expected to happen Wednesday.

The Lebanon Option: How Qatar Could End the War by Evacuating Hamas

CIA chief William Burns has been in Doha, Qatar, for talks with the emirate, which represents the Hamas terrorist organization in international diplomacy. David Barnea, head of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, has been there with him for talks this week.

There is little chance that these high-level spy chiefs would be in Qatar simply to negotiate about hostages, though that may be part of the talks. Rather, it is likely that Burns is looking for a longer-term solution that would end the war without losing the war.

A simple ceasefire is out of the question. Ending the fighting now — or prolonging it with endless promises of hostage releases by Hamas — would allow the terror group to survive, continuing a threat to Israel from Gaza and giving Hamas a massive victory.

But there is another option: a ceasefire that involves Hamas’s complete departure from Gaza. That is the solution that helped to end the First Lebanon War in 1982, when the entire Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) left Lebanon for Tunisia.

That war began in similar circumstances to the current one. For years, PLO guerillas had launched raids into Israel, and had shelled Israeli communities with Soviet-made Katyusha rockets. There was no Iron Dome then; civilians were in constant danger.

Israel invaded Lebanon in June 1982, rapidly moving into Beirut (and becoming bogged down in the pre-existing rivalries between factions in Lebanon that had already been fighting for many years).

More hostages freed from Hamas, one American included on list: reports

More Hamas hostages were freed Wednesday, the final day of an extended truce agreement with Israel – with at least one American included in the latest exchange, according to reports.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas said it has handed over the sixth wave of hostages, estimated at 12, who will receive medical screenings from the Red Cross before being transferred to Israeli hospitals.

At least one American hostage is expected among the dozen, CNN reported.

Also included in the group were two women with Russian-Israeli citizenship, Yelena Trupanob and Irena Tati, who were freed as a gesture to thank Russian President Vladimir Putin, I24 News reported.

A U.S. Navy warship sailing near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait shot down a drone launched from Yemen, a U.S. official said Wednesday, in the latest in a string of threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

The official said according to initial reports, USS Carney, a Navy destroyer, deemed the drone — an Iranian-made KAS-04 — to be a threat and shot it down over water in the southern Red Sea as the ship was moving toward the strait. Freed Thai hostage details barbaric conditions, says Jewish captives beaten with electrical wire

A newly freed Thai national who was taken captive by Hamas detailed the harsh conditions Hamas terrorists inflicted upon their captives.

The former hostage said that there was almost nothing to eat beyond a pita per day, or a can of tuna that had to be split between four people, the Times of Israel reports.

“We were with Israelis, and they were guarded all the time,” the man said.

“The Jews who were held with me were treated very harshly, sometimes they were beaten with electric cables," the ex-captive claimed.

Of course I do @libertybele  It cuts through my heart --- I have friends and loved ones living in Northern and Southern Israel.  I want an end to this for once and for all ---- and continuing the destructive Israeli/Palestinian "relationship" is not good enough.  It's time to break apart Israelis and Palestinians for real and for good.

As for the Biblical implications that I mentioned earlier -- Israel remains standing while other nations are wiped out.

I don't see your connection between the two.

This is insane!

One of the released Israeli kidnapped kids, who was held for almost 50 days in the attic of a house, says he was held by an UNRWA teacher.

This teacher is a father of 10 children, who locked the hostage in the attic, didn’t provided him with any food or his medicine.

Another hostage was held captive by a a Gazan DOCTOR who continued to provide care to children in the hospital, but not the Israeli kid.

Teachers, Doctors, UNWRA staff, they're all under Hamas' control. They were there at the massacre on October 7th, and took part in holding hundreds of hostages, including women and children, captive.
