BTW,I ran into one of your "heroes" today at a local Hardees.

He claimed he was a sniper who worked exclusively in Cambodia and Laos,and had over 300 confirmed kills,yet he couldn't remember where he was based and what outfit he was with. Then he started describing the USAF airfield that was put in where he was based,and I had to tell him there WERE NO US AIRFIELDS in Laos or Cambodia.

When he left,another guy I know that was sitting there told me he knew the man well,and he was a cook when he was in the army.

I guess now you want me to praise him because he was a cook sniper?

BTW,I have no problems with people who did go to VN,but were never in combat because their jobs did not require them to be in combat. I just have problems with people like that who pose in tactical gear and try to give the impression they were combat veterans.

Not my business - I took the oath, but never served (4F'd) - except that my uncle served in Korea as a cook, and my father served... Never got any further than Fort Riley, because he was too good at fixing things... Never heard anyone other than hippies mock their service, or make less of them.

There’s a lot of politicians  who I would never vote for but I still respect the fact that they served in the military. In 1984, I respected the fact that Mondale served in the army. But there was no way I was gonna vote for him.

AND......? WTH is that supposed to imply. I don't know about lawyers,but regular people that enlist in the Navy sign up for 4  years of service. That means he most likely got out of the Navy in 2008,and started his political career then,while bragging about being a veteran of the war in Shitstainistan. Which he was,in the respect that he was there while OTHER people were fighting the war.

A quick lookup shows that DeSantis was discharged in early 2010. He didn't run for office until the 2012 cycle. If his service was all some ploy to give himself resume points, why didn't he run in 2010? And why would he put his life and liberty at that kind of risk for that, knowing (as we did at the time) that the armed forces were using stop-loss tactics to avoid having to reactivate the draft?

Reading the guy's history... it's all over the place. From a Catholic school student to a Yale baseball player on track to a history teaching career, to Harvard Law, to the armed forces, to politician. This does not read to me like a guy grooming himself to be President. It reads like a late Gen Xer trying to find himself.

I'm just going to say that everyone I know who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, regardless of MOS, has a picture of themselves in their war gear because that's what they were issued, and that's what they wore from time to time.

Unless you were in the Green Zone in Baghdad, every convoy was a potential IED/ambush so everyone of every branch, regardless of MOS, went armed and used full convoy security.  Lots of ambushes, often triggered by IED, and subsequent firefights anyway.

Now if you're a...lawyer let's say, and you're not only wearing a camouflage uniform and carrying a weapon, but also war paint and a ghillie suit, then you're pretending you're something that you're not and deserve to be mocked.

But that's not what DeSantis did.

My FiL (rest his soul) got sick in boot camp, and by the time he was well enough, the war was about over, and he was sent to the Philippines to be a sentry at a civilian building.  I guess that made him a draft dodger, too.

That doesn't make sense to me.  It takes 20 years to reach retirement, and that puts him at 15.  I think he just exited service - not retired - because he became governor.

One of my FiL's brothers was training to be on one of the first beach landings on mainland Japan - he had already survived several prior beach landings - when the bombs were dropped.  He never spoke about it, but I'm sure that he was extremely relieved.  Odds are, he would not have survived if he had made the beach landing.
