That's really his biggest strength. He did best in the debate when he was pointing to the record of what he had accomplished rather than just saying what he would do.

So on the issue of education, he was able to point to banning the teaching of critical race theory and gender studies from Florida classrooms.  On the issue of crime, while everybody else just talked about Soros' prosecutors, he pointed out that he had fired two of them who were refusing to enforce the law in Florida.

To me, that is the real difference between him and the rest of the candidates. We're all used to politicians talking about the things that they would do differently, but it is rare that they can point so specifically to actual examples of how they have done that.

This is also an area where DeSantis is miles above Trump - He has proved his willingness to take strong actions despite massive condemnation from the left.  The left and MSM went after him hard for getting CRT and gender studies out of classrooms, but he stuck with it anyway. They did the same thing when he fired the prosecutors, filing lawsuits against him, etc.. But he's stuck to his guns.

The most obvious difference though, is on COVID. RiV's revisionism aside, most of us remember actually reading at the time how much flack DeSantis was taking for defying government recommendations. I remember reading all the articles from the Washington Post, from the New York times, and Fauci's own comments, saying how DeSantis was essentially murdering older people in Florida.   He took all that flak but stuck to his decisions anyway.

In contrast, the excuse we have been offered on this very site  for Trump's actions regarding Fauci and those recommendations is that he would have taken too much political flack if he had rejected Fauci's recommendations or removed him from that position.  Trump shied away from that kind of political heat, and DeSantis didn't. That is the difference to me.

Well put!!

DeSantis is a Paul Ryan puppet, Ramaswamy is Obama 2.0 I'll pass on both of them. Others opinions will differ.

I, for one, appreciate when we can have differing opinions, but still have respect for each other.

I think there's at least one difference between DeSantis and Ryan you'd have to acknowledge. Ryan never seemed to care two squats about cultural issues.  DeSantis has made opposition to CRT, gender crap, etc.. a major pillar of his campaign.  Ryan would never have done what DeSantis did in Florida on those issues.

Exactly.  Correlation on certain points is certainly not causation.  That applies in politics as well as in the rest of life.

P.S. Gov Nikk’s hissy fit made every married man in America cringe. The most common reaction from them being a massive outbreak of shrinkage.

I won’t be voting for her. I don’t know about you all.

I sure hope we don't lose site of the fact that Nikki Haley was woke before it was fashionable. Hell, I'd even vote for Tumpy before this wench.  And shrinkage?  I think she is an ugly hag.  Any remote thought of her sexually, is up there in Hilary territory.

The most obvious difference though, is on COVID. RiV's revisionism aside, most of us remember actually reading at the time how much flack does Santa's was taking for defying government recommendations. I remember reading all the articles from the Washington Post, from the New York times, and fousey's own comments, saying how DeSantis was essentially murdering older people in Florida.   He took all that flak but stuck to his decisions anyway. In contrast, the excuse we have been offered on this very site  for Trump's actions regarding Fauci and those recommendations is that he would have taken too much political flack if he had rejected Fauci's recommendations or removed him from that position.  Trump shied away from that kind of political flag, and DeSantis didn't. That is the difference to me.

We've been through this before and RIV knows this -- I live in FL.  DeSantis shut us down for a very short while and QUICKLY opened us up in steps.  We were opened up fully in a very short time.  Yes he defied the recommendations by the gov't and was heavily criticized. He took us forward anyways.  We are known now for being a 'free' state and hundreds of thousands have moved here during the past few years. I have posted numerous links backing up my claims as well.

@Right_in_Virginia stop spewing your darn bogus talking points.

IMHO I think DeSantis was the clear winner last night; his record speaks volumes. However, I think Haley did very well, calling out Ramsy and I believe that she was a winner last night as well.

Scott was weak and I was disappointed.

Pence seemed to try to ride on the Trump administration's coattails; but failures aren't a good thing to run on.

I liked the fact that Christie had a jab to Ramsy likening him to Obama. But that was about his only highlight of the evening.

Ramsy came across to me as about as phony and plastic as they come and I kept thinking he'd be great for a chewing gum commercial.

Hutchison - lackluster and really never got off the ground, Brugman surprised me and did a little better than Asa.

This is a place for honest debate and sometimes those debates get a little heated, but I try not to let mine get to the point of disrespecting anyone @deb

I have copies of many JRR Tolkin writings in my personal library. LOTR is great!

I also think it needs to be shouted loud and clear that all of Tumpy's televised ad Beg-a-thons have helped fund the Stone-Pecker Slime machine's that was designed to take down RDS, just like they did with the '16 field.

Trump is pure trash.  He needs to fade off in the sunset ....permanently.

One last thing before I leave this thread, I did not see one second of Faux News last night. I followed events as they occurred here.

I personally hope Fox News quickly fades into the sunset.

@sneakypete

This is the exact issue that divides us.

I don't think anyone here would dispute that Trump is smoother and more charismatic than is DeSantis.   The difference is that we don't value being smooth more than we do a consistent record of conservative accomplishments.   DeSantis is a doer rather than a talker.

I am no longer a Trump fan either, but I strongly agree with you.  I take no delight in his political persecution. IMO the leftists are trying to supress the votes of the people.

Trump praises Ramaswamy after first GOP debate
by Caroline Vakil - 08/24/23 7:38 AM ET

Former President Trump praised biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy after the Republican millennial defended him during the first debate.

“This answer gave Vivek Ramaswamy a big WIN in the debate because of a thing called TRUTH. Thank you Vivek!” Trump posted early Thursday morning on his Truth Social platform of the 2024 GOP presidential candidate.

Trump included a clip of Ramaswamy’s remarks, in which the 38-year-old Republican contender said during the first debate: “President Trump, I believe, was the best president of the 21st Century.”

Ramaswamy was the center of much of the attention during the date Wednesday night, after candidates including former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took jabs at the GOP upstart.
