"His (Dawkins’) metaphor of climbing the mountain (Climbing Mount Improbable, by Richard Dawkins) is loaded with intentionality.  No climber ever reached the summit of a high and difficult mountain without a powerful sense of wanting to get there.  The very fact that Dawkins admits to aiming for the summit, or in his own words, “only accepting mutations that improve optical performance”, is surely the most blatant admission that his version of neo-Darwinism is, despite claims to the contrary, profoundly goal-centered and purposeful." - How Blind is the Watchmaker, by Neil Broom, page 167

"The science to which I pinned my faith is bankrupt. Its counsels, which should have established the millennium, have led directly to the suicide of Europe. I believed them once. In their name I helped to destroy the faith of millions. And now they look at me and witness the great tragedy of an atheist who has lost his faith." - George Bernard Shaw, famous atheist, shortly before his death in 1950

This vast number of worlds, the enormous scale of the universe... has not been taken into account, even superficially, in virtually no (sic) religion, and especially in no (sic) Western religions. - Carl Sagan

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God and the firmament shows his handiwork.” – Psalm 19:1

Cosmos is a Greek word for the order of the universe. It is, in a way, the opposite of Chaos. It implies the deep interconnectedness of all things. It conveys awe for the intricate and subtle way in which the universe is put together. - Carl Sagan

Just thought of this today after returning to my HOA board of directors after a twelve year hiatus.  Politics is a joke at all levels.  A bad joke.

[Arabs conquered the Jews in the seventh century and drove most of them out.]

“Palestine... [a] desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds - a silent mournful expanse....A desolation is here that not even imagination can grace with the pomp of life and action....We never saw a human being on the whole route....There was hardly a tree or a shrub anywhere.”  - 1867 (Quoted in Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad. "Fine words butter no parsnips." - English idiom dating back to 1639

The idiom "fine words butter no parsnips" means that words alone are useless, especially flattering phrases or fine promises, and you should judge people by what they do rather than by what they say. The proverb implies that nothing concrete is achieved by empty words or flattery.

-Abraham Lincoln-
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Atheists can't keep their story straight.

“Religion is a fairy tale for people who are afraid of the dark.” – Stephen Hawking

Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going. – Stephen Hawking, The Grand Design, 2010

“If the rate of expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by even one part in a hundred thousand million million , the universe would have re-collapsed before it ever reached its present size.”  - Physicist Stephen Hawking

“The universe and the laws of physics seem to have been designed specifically for us.” – Stephen Hawking

“It would be very difficult to explain why the universe should have begun in just this way except as the result of a God who intended to create beings like us.” – Stephen Hawking

Simple questions can pose problems for any of us to answer.
What have you done recently to benefit your neighborhood, or your city, or your country?
If you have no answer, why is that?

I try to teach, friends, family, and strangers near and far.  It can be difficult to teach those who refuse to learn.

http://Irrational-Atheism.blogspot.com

Pick up litter wherever you go.  Report problems to your city that you see so they can make repairs and prevent accidents or electrocutions.
Pay attention and help.  Introduce yourself to someone just for fun, or who might need an encouraging word, or breakfast on you.
I bought breakfast for a young Marine recruit I approached.  He is sleeping in his car.  I gave him my two books to read for inspiration.

DEPTH OF LOVE

A man is driving with his wife as passenger when a catastrophic collision occurs.  He wakes up and gazes at the Gates of Paradise.
The distinguished looking man speaks to the husband:  "Welcome to paradise.  You may enter but your wife cannot follow you.  Enter now if you wish, but if you choose to follow her, your decision will be final."

The husband replies: "She is my life and wherever she goes, I will follow and be with her and give her comfort.  Our Heavenly Father does not need one more soul. My beloved wife does."

The distinguished looking man replies, "Well said, Brother.  Well said.  Your wife of fifty-six years is inside these gates, waiting for you, and you can be sure she is overjoyed with your faithful and loving answer."

"So you have time, space, matter, created - a Trinity of Trinities, there just – you know time is past, present future, space has length, width, height. Matter has solid, liquid, gas. You have a Trinity of Trinities created instantaneously. And the God who created them has to be outside of them. If he’s limited by time, he’s not God. The guy who created this computer is not in the computer. He’s not running around in there changing the numbers on the screen." - Ken Hovind
