Power Restored at Russian Nuclear Plant After Widespread Outages

Power was restored across southern Russia early Wednesday after a malfunction at a major nuclear plant the day before led to sweeping outages and emergency restrictions across the region.

A power unit at the Rostov nuclear plant automatically shut down on Tuesday afternoon due to a “false alarm” in the turbine generator’s safety system, according to the state operator Rosenergoatom.

Rosenergoatom said the plant’s crew “established and promptly resolved the cause” of the malfunction later that evening. By Wednesday morning, the 4,071-megawatt nuclear plant was supplying 2,800 megawatts of electricity from three of its operating units, with a fourth unit undergoing planned maintenance that began in June.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said in a short statement that it “continues to monitor the energy supply situation in regions experiencing abnormally high temperatures.” . . .

The city of Millerovo is just ~10 miles from the border with Ukraine, is pretty close to the front in that area. That Russia bases or even stages aircraft that close puzzles me. It's pretty risky, generally. That Ukraine attacked it with drones instead of ATACMS illustrates the way Russia takes advantage of the US forbidding Ukraine to use that or similar US-supplied munitions inside Russia. One or two ATACMS probably would have done more damage than the swarm of drones Ukraine probably used.

Probably the best things put out of commission by the attack were the fuel tank farm and SAM systems. The latter being lost will make the base even higher risk, while the destruction of the fuel and tanks may make the base almost unusable for staging and emergency landings.

Russian prisoners who were given the chance to fight in Ukraine for their freedom are returning to their communities, more violent, and causing panic across the country.

A tragic shooting took place on July 12th, 2024, in Ugolsky, a village in Russia’s Volgograd Region—home to only a handful of people. The village drew national attention when a convict, who recently had his sentence commuted after signing a contract with the Russian Army to fight in Ukraine, opened fire at a crowd of children with an assault rifle. One child was injured and is now hospitalized.

On this day, a group of children from the village decided to pull a prank on a neighbor, a former convict and veteran, and his brother, an active-duty soldier. The two men were throwing a party. The children managed to shut off the music inside the home of the brothers. According to the report, they then heard the sound of a gun reloading and promptly fled. Shots were fired, hitting a 12-year-old boy in the leg. The veteran, alongside his brother, was detained.

The shooter confessed the police handed over the case to the military prosecutor's office, and a village was terrorized by someone who should have remained in jail. But this wasn’t the only instance of such violence from a convict-turned-soldier in Russia.  .  .

Easily solved! Pull all Russian tanks, trucks, and "Scooby doo vans" out of Ukraine and put the most obsolescent back in reserve storage. Invaders out, Ukraine stops taking out Russian oil production and storage facilities.
