Were you old enough to appreciate the significance?

Hope I'm asking that correctly.....

Yes......I was just 7 but I remember seeing the Vatican and having a Coke at a cafe at St Peter's Square.....my dad was career USAF and we were on his 30day leave on the way to his next post in North Africa.....

The base is no longer there...but I remember laying on my back in our yard watching the bombers take off and land..the whole ground shook.......

While the world is starting to burn.....thought I'd bump this powerful Albinoni's rendition of Adagio in G Minor

Includes a beautiful slide show too!

NOTE: read the Cellist of Sarajevo its based on a true story of during the war in Serbia a man would walk out into the street and play this song on the cello every day each day for the amount of people who were killed in a mortar shelling this is the song he plays.

Truly beautiful and soothing.  Hope you find the time to enjoy it.

This piece is heard in several soundtrack music for movies.

It is the background in True Romance...in the scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken.....unforgettable.

I prefer Chopin

Chopin: Polonaise No.6 in A flat, Op.53 -"Heroic"

I love Beethoven, but I'm more of a Chopin guy (I especially like his first Ballade), with Brahms and Rachmaninoff tied for number 2 in my book.

BTW, Helene Grimaud did a surprisingly good performance of Ballade No.1 when she was only about 17 years old (see youtube).

Female pianists, BTW, are surging in our day. (Check out Valentina Lisitsa, probably the world's foremost Rachmaninoff pianist at this time.  She has a big following on Youtube, with a meteoric rise in the concert world after she made a self-funded CD with the London Symphony.  Her videotaped recording session of the 18th Variation of Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini is especially nice.)

For a period of time about forty years ago I used to come home from work, wash up, eat, and put on the Ninth.  Never get tired of hearing it.

My favorite Beethoven 9th was the 1963 by the Berlin Symphony Karajan at his peak IMO.

You Tube used to have the full 5th symphony Karajan rendition.  IMO was greatest live musical performance of anything, anywhere, anyhow.

Brought chills.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

I caught the Rode violin concerto on the classical radio station today

http://weta.org/fm

I noted the time and checked the playlist for today at the above link.

It was raining steadily...and the roads had no shoulders double line forests and hills around Thurmont, Maryland....it was so relaxing. especially the 1st movement or 1st selection.

Love Haydn.

But I'm drawn more toward Vivaldi.

What a mind!  What a period to live in.

@DCPatriot

Beethoven was completely deaf when he composed it.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-
